The Talented Mr Ripley
Out of Africa
When Harry Met Sally
A Room With A View

I’m sick in bed so need something to watch to take my mind off it!

Thanks.

Fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe (feel like I have that title wrong but it is something very similar!)

Pelleas · 25/04/2020 11:02

I love 'The Talented Mr Ripley' but I've never really found a film that compares to it.

Other films I've enjoyed with male protagonists trying to hide from their crimes are 'Catch me if you can' 'Wall Street' and 'Rogue Trader'. Not as good as Ripley, though.

I remembered that I also love Little Miss Sunshine!

Catch Me If You Can is a great film. I might rewatch that one. Thanks.

That's right @OnlyToWin - lovely film but very different to the book

Driving Miss Daisy

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 25/04/2020 11:11

The English Patient
Sleepless in Seattle
Much Ado About Nothing

Operator (2016)

KrakowDawn · 25/04/2020 11:14

Memento

longformyoldnormal · 25/04/2020 11:22

Covering crimes films: hmmm
The Shawshank Redemption best film of all time
The Tourist with Jolie and Depp, just for watching beautiful scenery
Knives out was really good, not sure it is it out yet though?

Pinkarsedfly · 25/04/2020 11:25

I watched Withnail and I for the umpteenth time last week and it cheered me up for days.

Also, you could try An Education, Shadowlands, Military Wives or The Great Gatsby?

OnlyToWin · 25/04/2020 13:02

Ladybird is on Netflix and is a quirky but lovely film.

Ladies in Black - also massively easy viewing and very gentle - the perfect convalescing film!!

lizzie1970a · 25/04/2020 13:14

Sideways
Evil Under the Sun
Death on the Nile
A Passage to India

(Trying to think of crime and a beautiful setting although no crime in Sideways but it is set in the Napa Valley I think and there's "romance" if you can call it that).

Julie and Julia?

lekkerkroketje · 25/04/2020 13:16

Educating Rita

darklady64 · 25/04/2020 13:27

If you liked Little Miss Sunshine, try Muriel's Wedding.

Second Educating Rita and Withnail.

If you want to go old style, try An Affair to Remember (get the tissues)

Ohffs66 · 25/04/2020 13:28

The Piano
The Vanishing
Harold & Maude (if you can find it anywhere)

There's also a film with Geoffrey Rush in which is called The Best Offer or Deception depending on where you are, it seems to have different names in different countries. DH and I watched it a couple of years ago and both agreed it was the best one we'd seen in a long time

rosiepony · 25/04/2020 13:28

Muriel’s Wedding is ace!

Dreamersandwishers · 25/04/2020 13:35

Knives out is on Prime - great cast, good movie
Miss Petigrew Lives For a Day
Inception
The Departed ( violent in places, but I loved it)

DianaT1969 · 25/04/2020 14:08

Another vote for Fried Green Tomatoes
Cinema Paradiso
Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Finding Your Feet (good UK cast)
Truly Madly Deeply
Maybe Sex & The City Film 1? Definitely not the sequel.

H1978 · 25/04/2020 14:10

Lady in the van (based on a true story)

wowfudge · 25/04/2020 14:11

Slumdog Millionaire

FilmFaves · 25/04/2020 14:58

Some amazing ideas. Thank you!

I used to love Muriel’s wedding. Haven’t seen it for years. Also love Memento and Sideways. Just remembered Heavenly Creatures too!

Somebody on another thread mentioned Shirley Valentine which I haven't seen for ages but is a heart film

Gaelforce · 25/04/2020 16:30

Ripley's Game - with John Malkovich - might be a contender.
