People who know about iPhones - please help!

I have an iPhone XR. I absolutely hate it, it's huge, I have to use two hands to hold it. It's so heavy it pulls the holdy-device in the car downwards and I constantly have to push it back up again Angry

I have to message with two hands like I have a Blackberry. When I've tried to message with one hand whilst lying down, the phone has hit me in the face. It's actually so annoying I want to throw it out of the window and get a Nokia 3210.

Now, I'm going to just pay the money to escape the contract and upgrade, but to which other iPhone? Which of the other (newer) iPhones are smaller and less ridiculous? Due to lockdown I can't get into the shops to see the phones, but using the comparison tools online it looks like most of the new ones are just as big and just as heavy... really?! Is that right?

Oh I actually miss the days where Apple brought out one new iPhone, not 3 or 4 at the same time just to offer the market different options confuse me.

And please no suggestions of getting an Android, I can't cope with phone related change, I would have no idea how to use it and it would be more stressful than being hit in the face by my phone most nights.

My new SE has just arrived, I think it's heavier than my current phone, but same size. Can't start switching sim cards and stuff yet as waiting for a call back from GP so don't want to miss call, but I'm excited!

woodencoffeetable · 25/04/2020 08:24

my phone has arrived.
I'm happy with it.
I would have prefered 5s size tbh, but this is ok.
what I don't like are the headphones as there is no separate plug for them. I need to find out if there is an adapter. my other headphones are soo much more comfortable.

Barrique · 25/04/2020 09:08

@woodencoffeetable

You need a lightning to headphone 3.5mm jack adaptor - the Apple one is about £9.

woodencoffeetable · 25/04/2020 09:13

thanks!

cardoon · 25/04/2020 09:31

I can't believe how slippery it is! lol
I will need to get a rubber case asap
and new headphones - this was on the cards anyway
Very elegant design but I would have liked a bit smaller too

PetronellaOsgoods · 25/04/2020 10:23

Wasn't there an adapter in the box, @woodencoffeetable? When I bought my 8 it was included. Though maybe the lower price-point meant they left it out.

DominaShantotto · 25/04/2020 10:34

Those complaining about headphones - I assume it's the USB C thing? I have iPad Pros and have the same port and I'm dead picky about headphones as the modern shape ones hurt the fuck out of my ears. I just got a USB C to audio jack adaptor online and use whatever ones I want to via that. Cheap generic ones seem to work fine, the only one I have that doesn't work is a Huawei one off my mobile phone.

I'm waiting out the remaining couple of months on my contract to move off Android as I'm gradually acquiring more Apple stuff and it all working together is so bloody handy.

woodencoffeetable · 25/04/2020 10:34

no, only charger, cable & headphones were in the box.
will see if the local phone shop has the adapter.

woodencoffeetable · 25/04/2020 11:35

thinking about it, I would need a splitter as well so that I can charge and listen at the same time.
reviews are awful though, they don't seem to work for long.

cardoon · 25/04/2020 11:46

wish i'd thought about this, i'm v fussy about ear buds and usually hate apple ones - are the new style any better?
Don't really want to go down the route of adaptors Sad

woodencoffeetable · 25/04/2020 11:56

the new style is better, a lot less sticky out. but the cable is quite short.
I sometimes sleep with headphones and have ones that have a long cord and don't hurt when lying on them.

AldiAisleOfCrap · 25/04/2020 12:01

I really like my apple AirPods expensive but very comfortable and I normally hate in ear headphones.

Sexnotgender · 25/04/2020 12:04

I had an XR and lasted a year before selling it and getting the 11 pro. So much better. Agree the SE looks great.

cardoon · 25/04/2020 12:20

are the in ear bits the same shape?

cardoon · 25/04/2020 12:23

will do a test run tomorrow, might go for the airpods if I like them @AldiAisleOfCrap

ActuallyItsEugene · 25/04/2020 12:37

I had the XR and it done this to my finger from holding it!!
Changed it for an iPhone 11 and haven't looked back (although my finger still has the poxy dent Angry)

The new iPhone SE has wireless charging, @woodencoffeetable, would you be able to sit it on a a charger while using the ear pods in the charging port?

woodencoffeetable · 25/04/2020 12:59

not on a train though, where on long journeys I would use a powerbank as sockets are a bit hit and miss

cardoon · 25/04/2020 13:13

started @ 100% this morning now @ 37%, much lower than usual, is this normal battery usage I wonder?

I know with iPads they use a lot more battery when just new or when you've done an OS update while they build indexes etc.

cardoon · 25/04/2020 13:30

interesting DS, i am mainly whatsapping and it's now @ 29%, do you think this will improve?

bluetongue · 25/04/2020 13:44

I’ve recently gone from a 5S to an 11. When I first took it out of the box it seemed huge but it only took about a day or so to get used to it and I’ve got pretty small hands. The battery life is amazing!

The only thing I don’t like is it doesn’t fit neatly in my jeans pocket and I’m forever stopping it from falling out when I take my dog for a walk. Especially when I bed over to pick up poo Grin

cardoon · 25/04/2020 13:49

now @ 24% Sad
Not going to last the day Angry
Ordinarily i'd get 2 days

GiantKitten · 25/04/2020 13:51

I think they do use a lot the first few days anyway so don’t despair, cardoon

Have a look at this though - there are lots of settings you can change to reduce battery drain
