As it's likely lots of us won't be travelling abroad much for a while it's got me thinking about areas of the UK I know very little about. Some counties I have never even driving through and I couldn't tell you anything about them - I literally have no opinion of what they are like at all, or famous for. for example Northamptonshire. I've passed through bits of it on the motorway or A1 I think but I have no clue about what it's like. Bedfordshire is another one. I have a perception (not great) of Luton and that's it.

I'd love to do a road trip this summer if I can (motorhome) all around Britain and stop at least a few days here and there in all the nicest parts of every county. Tell me about yours. Where are the lovely bits everyone gravitates to? Or the secretly lovely bits few people know about?

Obviously when i say 'if I can' I mean assuming all travel restrictions are limited and we are reasonably back to normal. I don't intend to visit places if it is still advised officially not to. Just want to make that clear, before I get flamed.

Devon, on the north coast. It’s the most beautiful place in the world, not that I’m biased Grin I go with my friends every year to spend a long weekend around salcombe and Dartmouth, and we absolutely love it 😍 but the north coast will always have my heart. Exmoor is stunning, and I live right near to Clovelly, which is gorgeous and so unique.

GeraniumJohnsonsBlue · 20/04/2020 11:17

I've been to Clovelly it's gorgeous. Isn't North Devon a bit of a tumbleweed place in winter though? And heaving in the summer? I've never been to Dartmouth or Salcombe. I've heard Dartmouth is lovely.

Well it depends what you want. I love winter here, very few tourists and it’s all still just as beautiful. I’m not really one for crowds and busy cities, and I love the outdoors plus I’m on the beach all year round, either surfing or just walking so it works for me.

I feel like that about Derbyshire and Shropshire. I know not one thing about them outside of the few mentions on Pride and Prejudice!

I don't even really know where they are.

MrsPworkingmummy · 20/04/2020 11:25

Northumberland is an absolutely beautiful county with coast, castles and culture galore. We lived just south of the county and recently moved to a city even further south... We hugely regret our decision and will be looking to move back in the future.

circusintown · 20/04/2020 11:44

I'm from Yorkshire - it's the best county there is Grin

But I live in Lancashire. Morecambe to be exact. I love it here. The village of Heysham is lovely and we've got the best views here.

Famous for Morecambe bay cockles, Eric Morecambe and the Art Deco Midland Hotel. And Tyson Fury Grin

Dowser · 20/04/2020 11:47

Love N Yorks..and usually spend half the week there in caravan season
Sooo missing it.
It’s beautiful. Lovely people. We go a couple of times a week into york. Great music scene.
Then there’s ripon, harrogate, Northallerton, Scarborough , Whitby, the dales, the moors, HowardIan hills, Ancient ruins , beautiful walks like the top of the white horse , little country pubs

I want my life back😢

We had a brilliant holiday in Shropshire one year. There is so much to see and do. Northumberland and Yorkshire have lots to offer as well.

GeraniumJohnsonsBlue · 20/04/2020 11:51

I've had a bit of a thing for Wiltshire over the last few years. Everywhere I've been it's been just lovely. (Never been to Swindon which might account for that.) It seems the only think it lacks is a coast. Salisbury, Marlborough, Devizes all lovely.

No longer live in a county as I now live in a different country but my last was Lambeth. Do London boroughs count or do I have to go Surrey?

Anyway Lambeth, best place on earth ❤️

Ylfa · 20/04/2020 11:55

Suffolk- it’s ideal if you want a life relatively untouched by technology, fashion and human diversity. Touristy in summer because beaches (Aldeburgh aka Islington by the sea, Southwold etc) but generally very sparsely populated. No cities. No motorways? Newmarket for horse racing. Constable country is pretty. Mostly farmed and flat so quite a dull landscape but not without its own charms.

Bluesheep8 · 20/04/2020 11:56

Rural West Yorkshire. I love it and would definitely recommend. It's stunningGrin

Bluesheep8 · 20/04/2020 11:58

circusintown and geranium

Ha ha! I'm the opposite, born in Lancs and living in Yorks....Grin

IKEA888 · 20/04/2020 11:58

Dumfries and Galloway.
It's lovely. beautiful coastline and forests too.
relatively warm too because of gulf stream.

PickAChew · 20/04/2020 11:59

Durham. Absolutely stunning and probably the best city to be locked down in.

I’m from Shropshire and it’s beautiful!

Lots to see and do and with the most gorgeous countryside and hills.

Shrewsbury for independent shops, quaint medieval streets, loads of brilliant eateries and a walk along the river.

Ludlow for good food, farmers market and medieval buildings.

Stretton hills for stunning walks and the most incredible views. Google it, beautiful 😍

Just avoid Telford Wink

circusintown · 20/04/2020 12:02

Ooh I love Dumfries

There are a lot of people living in Morecambe from my home town and after many years the jokes have let up a bit. But I tell them I'm here in Lancashire to do them a favour

@Bluesheep8 whereabouts are you? Sounds like Haworth or similar?

GeraniumJohnsonsBlue · 20/04/2020 12:05

I've only ever been to Edinburgh for a weekend. Nowhere else in Scotland. Been to Cardiff for one day. Nowhere else in France. Never been to NI.

I live in Northumberland. It's glorious and I'm really missing my long walks along the coast / in the countryside!

GeraniumJohnsonsBlue · 20/04/2020 12:05

France? Confused I meant Wales.

notagaincharlie · 20/04/2020 12:10

I went to Shropshire last year for the first time and it was lovely, really amazing.
I'm on the South Downs and I must say, Sussex does have a lot to offer. Soft rolling hills, sea, harbours, market towns with independent shops.

GeraniumJohnsonsBlue · 20/04/2020 12:11

I always imagine Leicestershire as just being a city and some suburbs - no countryside. To me Leicestershire is Birmingham. Just Birmingham. Confused
