As it's likely lots of us won't be travelling abroad much for a while it's got me thinking about areas of the UK I know very little about. Some counties I have never even driving through and I couldn't tell you anything about them - I literally have no opinion of what they are like at all, or famous for. for example Northamptonshire. I've passed through bits of it on the motorway or A1 I think but I have no clue about what it's like. Bedfordshire is another one. I have a perception (not great) of Luton and that's it.

I'd love to do a road trip this summer if I can (motorhome) all around Britain and stop at least a few days here and there in all the nicest parts of every county. Tell me about yours. Where are the lovely bits everyone gravitates to? Or the secretly lovely bits few people know about?

Sorry, I forgot to give the reasons! Worcestershire is prob best known touristically for Malvern and the hills, as well as Broadway on the north edge of the Cotswolds. What really does it for me is the amazing local food (its the season for fresh cut asparagus from the fields atm), villages which are alive (and I love the local thing of the village walk abouts where the fete is spread round all the gardens), the slightly quirky festivals (Aspara fest, plum festival), and the National Trust pub. Lots of great history stuff too - civil war, Croome Court, Worcester Cathedral, plus things like the lavender and confetti fields.

I'm from Leicestershire! Please don't tar us with the Birmingham brush!! The pros are that there's some gorgeous countryside. Bradgate park is one of my favourite places ever. We're right in the centre of the country so it's not super hard to get anywhere really. Not too long to get to London if that's your thing and there's some lovely little villages around here. We couldn't be further from the sea though, which upsets me. I'd love to be near a beach but love being near my family more.

@GeraniumJohnsonsBlueGeraniumJohnsonsBlue, I live in Luton, what would you like to know, it's not a particularly horrible place to live :-)

bloodywhitecat · 20/04/2020 12:36

Suffolk, love it.

FAQs · 20/04/2020 12:36

Lambeth! Although I moved out 15 years ago (and miss it a little bit)

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/04/2020 12:37

Quorn ( the food) Is named after Quorn, the town.
The organism used to grow it was discovered nearby.

AgeLikeWine · 20/04/2020 12:38

@BoswellsBollocks I agree. The Charnwood villages are definitely one of the nicest places to live in the Midlands. We are lucky Smile.

GiantKitten · 20/04/2020 12:39

I have family in Leicestershire & there are some really lovely villages and small towns there. Also it’s very well-connected to the rest of the country.

We’re in E Lancs, which isn’t. Min 30 minutes to the M6 and then - well, it’s the M6 Hmm Takes bloody hours to get anywhere unless it’s the middle of the night.

Beautiful countryside here though - very green. (There’s a reason for that...)

jmh740 · 20/04/2020 12:39

Another born in Yorkshire now live in lancs have to put up with lots of ribbing from family who still live in York's, I love where I live Manchester, liverpool, blackpool, lakes all within an hours drive, have so beautiful local countryside, I love the north coast whitby robinhoods bay, also now near Fleetwood and morecambe etc. Oh is from the highlands sc live in Edinburgh and ds is at uni in London so we visit these places often. Never been to Cornwall but would like too

UnderTheIroningBoard · 20/04/2020 12:40

Essex, and it's hit and miss really, depending on where you go.
North Essex is in general nicer than most of South Essex, IMO, and rural Essex is beautiful, especially in the summer.
That said, most people in South Essex (including one of the towns with the worst reputation in the area) are quite friendly and down to earth. Just a rather large minority spoiling it for the others!
I'm in the North of Essex now, nearer to Colchester, but have lived down in the south as well.
Really, the only thing I would visit Essex for is Colchester Zoo (and maybe Castle),, and that's only if you're near enough to make it a day trip. It's a great zoo, but I hear that others around the country are great too! To be honest, I haven't really visited any other touristy spots around the county, so I may well be missing out on something myself...

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 20/04/2020 12:40

County Durham. I love it. I moved here for university and never left. Now out in a little village and never plan to leave.

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/04/2020 12:41

I just looked up the Worcester confetti fields - wow!

BoswellsBollocks · 20/04/2020 12:43

@GiantKitten

Aah ok, that’s interesting, I’d never seen that before, I’m just going by what my SIL told me. She’s from close to Quorn and people there very much dispute any connection.

GeraniumJohnsonsBlue · 20/04/2020 12:43

I live in Luton, what would you like to know, it's not a particularly horrible place to live :-)

Nothing specifically - I was just saying that the existence of Luton is just about the only thing I know about Bedfordshire. And I only know about Luton because a) the airport and b) it seemed to be mentioned a lot a few years back when the police were arresting people for Islamic terrorist offences.

I don't know anything about Bedfordshire's landscape, what the local industries are, what the villages are like, what the local accent is like, what the most poplar tourist spots are. Nothing.

I'm from Rutland, a lovely little county. Oakham and Uppingham are attractive towns, there are pretty villages with good pubs and Rutland Water as the main attraction.

I currently live in South West Bedfordshire between Luton/Dunstable and MK. I'm very contented here, we're not far from the Chilterns and close to Woburn and Whipsnade. Easy to get to London or Birmingham by train too.

RingtheBells · 20/04/2020 12:50

I live in one of the Northamptonshire towns and we do have some nice villages as PP said, likewise Bedfordshire but it’s not really a place you would holiday at, it’s OK for the lockdown though as you can go on some country walks and not see hardly anyone. Both are places you travel through or from not too but they are not horrible just a bit dull

Poetryinaction · 20/04/2020 12:59

I live in Gloucestershire. We moved here for dh work and I knew nothing about it. I miss the sea but it's so beautiful here. Easy to get to Wales and London, near to Bristol. So pretty, so green. And people are friendly. I love it.

hevs03 · 20/04/2020 13:33

@GeraniumJohnsonsBlue, well Bedfordshire is a nice county, not really a place to holiday like you would perhaps in Yorkshire or Devon etc. but we have lots of green spaces not too far away and personally I like being close to main transport links, it takes me 10 mins to get to the airport to go on holiday (I don't live under the flight path), 5 min drive to the M1 and as I go to lots of concerts in London, it's 30 mins on the train. Luton is multicultural and yes there has been terrorist incidents previously but its not a regular occurrence thankfully. Swings and roundabouts really, I like it here, have known no different but saying that I like the idea of retiring to the coast (though that is a few years away yet) ;-)

Scruffyoak · 20/04/2020 14:01

I've lived in Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset. I now live in Suffolk and it's the best county I have ever lived in. I wouldnt Rate Hampshire as a whole,Love Wiltshire and Dorest is ok.

Suffolk is such a charm.

DefConOne · 20/04/2020 14:11

I live in Devon on the border with Cornwall. Too many gorgeous places in both counties to mention.

missyB1 · 20/04/2020 14:16

I live in Gloucestershire, it’s not a bad County. We are surrounded by the Cotswolds, pretty villages and scenic hills. I’m a 45 minute drive from Bristol and 1 hour from Birmingham if I get bored of here and need some City time. It’s also a straight run (if not particularly speedy) down the M5 to North Devon for holidays.

MrsMoastyToasty · 20/04/2020 14:17

@GeraniumJohnsonsBlue. Bristol (city where I was born) is also very hilly.

TheMarzipanDildo · 20/04/2020 14:21

I’m from Cheshire. I love it-gorgeous countryside and loads to do. Chester is very naice.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 20/04/2020 14:26

I've lived in Wiltshire, Hereford, Somerset, Norfolk, Suffolk, the Fens and Northumberland. Norfolk is brilliant, but Northumberland is better. Like Norfolk, it has a proper dialect, but unlike Norfolk it has much better facilities. Not quite as many old buildings, due to the Border wars.
