As it's likely lots of us won't be travelling abroad much for a while it's got me thinking about areas of the UK I know very little about. Some counties I have never even driving through and I couldn't tell you anything about them - I literally have no opinion of what they are like at all, or famous for. for example Northamptonshire. I've passed through bits of it on the motorway or A1 I think but I have no clue about what it's like. Bedfordshire is another one. I have a perception (not great) of Luton and that's it.

I'd love to do a road trip this summer if I can (motorhome) all around Britain and stop at least a few days here and there in all the nicest parts of every county. Tell me about yours. Where are the lovely bits everyone gravitates to? Or the secretly lovely bits few people know about?

Mid Lothian so the very lovely Edinburgh and its surroundings and a short hop over to East Lothian and lovely beaches.

Grasspigeons · 20/04/2020 18:44

Surrey is lovely but people are embarrassed to admit it. Lovely north downs and surrey hills, lots of pretty towns and villages.

Frustratedmummy79 · 20/04/2020 18:57

Derbyshire has the most stunning scenery! The Peak District is vast and really different as you move around it. We have Chatsworth House which is a wonderful place, Bakewell (home of the tart!) Matlock Bath (seaside resort without the sea!)
I love it here, Derbyshire in the sunshine is a sight to behold

ExplodingCarrots · 20/04/2020 19:05

@MinnieMountain South Pembrokeshire.

@Wrigleys123 I only live 10 minutes from Tenby. We are so so lucky , it's a shame a lot of people don't see it.

Port1aCastis · 20/04/2020 19:06

On the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall it's wonderful at the moment glorious weather and unusually quiet.

480Widdio · 20/04/2020 19:19

Staffordshire.

The Staffordshire Moorlands are beautiful. The area around Alton Towers is also lovely, people go to the theme park and never visit the nearby countryside.

Lichfield is a little city,Cathedral, lots of cafes and restaurants...

I went to school in Sussex,I would move back in a heartbeat, somewhere like Ditchling,I miss the South Downs and the sea.I have family in Lindfield,a quintessential English Village.

Susiesue61 · 20/04/2020 19:32

The Wirral 😊Which is Merseyside really! It has lovely villages, beaches, countryside, easy to get to Liverpool or Chester. I moved here from Bedfordshire 30 years ago and would never go back!

Fi57 · 20/04/2020 20:17

Lothians, Edinburgh to be precise, the most beautiful city in the world😊

Perthshire. Stunning hill and mountain scenery especially when the autumn colours are on the trees. Lots of lochs and rivers, activity centres, wildlife, plus great theatres, concert hall etc. And easy access to the Highlands, the coast and Edinburgh.
We’re the biggest county in Scotland at 2,000 square miles, and there is plenty of fresh air and space for everyone.

LuckyMarmiteLover · 20/04/2020 20:36

Bristol - just watch the recent episode on Location, Location, Location to see how gorgeous it is!

redeyetonowheregood · 20/04/2020 21:12

Aberdeenshire. Just stunning. From the beaches, such as st. Cyrus and the fishing villages, such as Gourdon, Penman (where local hero was filmed) and Gardenstone, to inland and the Grampian mountains, glens, Royal Deeside, Banchory, Braemar, Balmoral etc... My spiritual home, however, I now live in Norfolk. I never thought I would like this flat place with massive skies but to my surprise I have fallen in love with it. The North Norfolk coast is...home too, in a different way. Nothing beats a baking hot day in the summer and head to the beach for a whole day relaxing in a bikini, in the sea and fairly safe for children.

redeyetonowheregood · 20/04/2020 21:13

Pennan, not Penman.

Bubbletrouble43 · 20/04/2020 21:17

Cornwall. North Coast. I love it.

BambooSurprise · 20/04/2020 21:21

Lincolnshire.

It's not pretty and it's not fancy but...

  • we have quite low coved-19 levels
And
  • we have a tonne of space so social distancing is a breeze

So I'm appreciating it a bit more these days Grin

Also houses are quite cheap and it's central so you can get to most parts of England easily enough.

Sparklingbrook · 20/04/2020 21:24

@CMOTDibbler has pretty much mentioned everything good about Worcestershire, I love it here.

As for Birmingham I grew up in a suburb of South Birmingham about 10 miles from the city centre where it was all happening. It was an absolute dream to live there through the 80s, but going back now doesn't do anything for me. Rose coloured glasses and all that I suppose. I think I am right in saying you can cross Cadbury World off your to do list though. Very meh.

Turquoisetamborine · 20/04/2020 21:29

I live on the border of County Durham (always remember the County part, Durham is the city not the county) and Northumberland. Can't recommend both counties enough. Co. Durham is the quieter, more overlooked neighbour but it has some stunning parts.
We love Durham City, Seaham, Barnard Castle, Beamish museum , just to name a few.
Northumberland will already have been raved about on this thread. We are lucky enough to have Corbridge and Hexham close by and both are worth a visit. All the roman Wall attractions are stunning.
Just come. You won't regret it.

Jellykat · 20/04/2020 21:30

Another one in Pembrokeshire here..
Beautiful walks along the coast, through bluebell woods or across The Preseli mountains, lovely beaches and a real feeling of space and fresh air!

MinnieMountain · 21/04/2020 07:08

@ExplodingCarrots you're not far from my dad then. He's in Stepaside.

I'm amazed people don't think of Pembrokeshire as a nice place to live but maybe it's just seen as a holiday place.

cricketmum84 · 21/04/2020 07:10

Yorkshire. Gods own county. Anywhere else ain't worth mothering about 😂 but seriously it is beautiful. Well worth a visit :)

GrumpySausage · 21/04/2020 07:21

Nottinghamshire. I'm just close to the border of Derbyshire.

It's OK. Very handy for M1, and some pretty villages in the suburbs. Also where I live you can be in the beautiful Derbyshire dales within half an hour.

House prices are good too compared to a lot of the country. I can't see myself ever moving but it's never going to win any awards.

MushroomTree · 21/04/2020 07:26

@GeraniumJohnsonsBlue if you've not been to Swindon I can see why you love Wiltshire Grin I agree with you about Marlborough though. I've spent a lot of time there and it's very pretty. Plus there's a cafe at the college end of the high street that does an amazing white chocolate and chilli hot chocolate. Just the right combination of sweet and spicy. Yum!

Bottomplasters · 21/04/2020 07:35

Manchester, well Mossley to be precise. Great city. From Mossley, lots of lovely villages 5 mins away. Greenfield, Uppermill, dovestones nearby. Not far into Yorkshire and Blackpool, lakes 1.5hrs away. Picture of dovestones

Wilding · 21/04/2020 07:45

How about Oxfordshire? Oxford itself is stunning plus we have a ton of beautiful little villages, some of the nicest bits of the Cotswolds plus things like Blenheim which is always worth a visit. Admittedly some of the county is a bit boring and commuter-beltish but I love living here. Only downside is no beaches but there are some good rivers for wild swimming!

Verily1 · 21/04/2020 07:50

I’d love to go to Devon/ Cornwall- went as a very young child but can’t remember it.

I also went to Scarborough as a child but have avoided it as an adult as I’ve heard it’s run down and don’t want to be disappointed.

I’ve never been to Norfolk.

I’d also like to go back to Snowdonia.
