Severe constipation- PLEASE HELP ME (Warning TMI!)

A combination of rubbish eating, lack of water and codeine for period pain has led to me being constipated. I haven’t ever had it this bad and I am in total and utter agony. I usually go every day and I haven’t been in 4 days. I’ve tried mainlining fibre rich food, loads of water, going for a walk and laxatives. This morning I can hardly walk. I can feel the stools in my rectum And they are rock hard. I think they may be becoming/have become impacted. I’ve sat on the toilet for hours and I think I’ve torn myself, there’s no bloody but I was literally
Shaking with pain earlier, it was taking my breath away . I do not know what to do, I’m totally panicking. It hurts to sit down, it hurts to stand up. The pressure in my back/buttocks is unreal and it’s spreading down my legs.

Can I go the walk in centre? Or ring 111? I would really rather avoid that because I’m a single mum so would have to take 7 year old DS with me but I will do anything. It’s just so painful when I push, feels like I’m Labour.

Please can ANYONE off any advice on what I can do. Thanks

Oh I’ve found my tribe.
I had the most e cruciating time two years ago and then last year but I appear to have got it sorted.
Like chalk up , I know far too much about this subject

Movicol/ laxido / cosmic ol are one and the same substance. They are osmotives. They bring water into the bowel so you need to drink a glass of water an hour. Water , not tea. A

Apparently ly we should be passing straw coloured urine every two hours for optimum health.

Now you can take muvicol, up to 6-8 sachets a day. I hadn’t been for a day..but I think I was well backed up as well, so look at it as a long term solution.
The day I couldn’t go, like you I was in agony, so I took 4 sachets o we the day , even one at bedtime with 2 Senna.

The next day, I went a little bit, but kept up with the muvicol and Senna until I had a proper bowel motion The next day
I then cut back on the movicol but still took one every day
Even though I was going every day I just didn’t feel like it was enough.

I changed my diet..like chalk up, I’m now 100 per cent gluten and dairy free , I never come off it..I’m never going back to those days again.
I used to get pain in my back ffs

I changed from breakfast omelette to homemade gluten free Oat muesli.
This has gf oats, quinoa flakes, any dried fruit I can find, any nuts brazils, walnuts, unsalted cashews, pistachios, seeds, linseeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds..which are also good for parasite removal. I’d recommend doing a parasite cleanse twice a year with black hulled walnut tincture, cloves Powder and Wormwood tincture

Then I top the muesli with fresh fruit salad and add almond milk or some kind of non dairy milk

This is a game changer
I now just take 1/2 movicol if needed maybe once or twice a week and 1/2 Senna the same

So don’t just get things moving for now..see it as a 6 month plan. It’s been just over 6 months for me and Now it’s more of a maintainance thing.

My Gp did a 5 week fast and went to the loo every day..we are sheddding all sorts inside, dead cells etc

The gf and df thing..so glad I did this. My dh doesn’t need hearing aids any more as his sinuses have cleared and if you do have an intolerance, it can create inflammation for pathogens to breed.

Hope that helps. My granddaughter doesn’t have a good diet, White and bland and she was put on a 6 month plan.
When I make my 1/2 sachet up , I put chlorophyll in and a vit c 1 gram tablet As well
It’s not u pleasant
Chlorophyll is the body cleanser.
There’s a school of thought that to be really healthy you should poop like birds, after every meal.
There’s something to be said about this.
When you think about it , you don’t want a lot of stagnant waste inside.

Dowser · 19/04/2020 13:23

Oops, sorry about all of that.

BunnytheHoneyBee · 19/04/2020 13:26

You’re saying you’re in agony so calling 111 wouldn’t be an overreaction but it might take time to get through and see someone.

I definitely recommend going to the local pharmacy if you have one nearby and see what they recommend.

Maybe eat drinking water and maybe fruit juice in the meantime and just getting moving can help.

You need a dulcolax but I warn you, you go from one pain to another cos you will have a serious tummy ache and uncontrollable diarrhoea

Dowser · 19/04/2020 13:30

My dil who is a spinal nurse told me about muvicol
Both times I’ve had problems was in warm weather
Just never drank enough water.
Magnesium is very good
I take some after every meal

FourDecades · 19/04/2020 13:32

I don't see what 111 will do to help. If your lucky someone will phone you back and tell you everything that has already been said

PillowTalkFork · 19/04/2020 13:34

Ok so I put another suppository and it worked! The relief is immense. Thank you so, so much for all your help and suggestions. I’m going to continue taking the lacusol every day I think just to keep things moving

I had the same problem a few weeks back

In the end after 4 days I took a laxative and drank more water.

The pain from the laxative is quite bad but it did work 8 hours later.

Dowser · 19/04/2020 13:38

When you’re through all of this..Apple pectin is good..so yes an apple a day
Our bowel is about 28 feet long, so 4 feet longer than my living room, definitely not bragging, imagine it all curled up, there’s a lot of places for poop to hide which is why I think looking at it as a long term plan is good and I found muvicol quite gentle as it works with your body
Whereas dulcolax tablets are quite harsh as is picolax

dottiedodah · 19/04/2020 13:38

I think it may be worth speaking to 111 if you can get through to them .Pain in back /legs needs investigating, just in case of some sort of obstruction there .Your GP tomorrow if not .Without wishing to alarm you unduly,I was unable to pass a stool/back pain and was found to have a cyst that had burst!Hopefully this is not the case for you ,but it needs to be checked out by a medically trained person.

CrazyToast · 19/04/2020 13:41

Use your fists to gently but firmly massage and press your stomach. I have to do this to my DH sometimes when he has it bad. It gets things moving in there.

2bazookas · 19/04/2020 14:01

get yourself a carton of pineapple juice and drink it. works :-) and also gentle.

Maria53 · 19/04/2020 14:02

Peppermint tea should sort you out.

SheldonSaysSo1 · 19/04/2020 14:03

Try glycerin suppositories and if you can buy laxido over the counter in a chemist. Check the dose but I think it can go up to 6 sachets in a day when things are very bad and they should work quite quickly. Keep drinking, a gentle walk will help if you can manage and some fig/date juice.

FallonSwift · 19/04/2020 14:05

Coffee has a laxative effect - so a cup or two every day will help keep things moving.

When on the loo, raising your legs by putting your feet onto a box (or a pile of books) helps improve the angle of your body and encourages the opening of your bowels.

EyeShipMiceElf · 19/04/2020 14:06

Thanks @ChinUpChestOut
I’ll add some to my order.

helpmum2003 · 19/04/2020 14:07

Life long sufferer here, poor you i know how incredibly painful it can be, what a time for it to happen.
Movicol/Laxido has changed my life. Agree that manual pressure from inside vagina works well and getting feet up off floor. Hope you feel better soon xx

Gingerkittykat · 19/04/2020 14:15

Laxido is the treatment for an impaction, it took 2 days of mega doses to work when I had a suspected impaction.

The nurse told me to use suppositories at the same time to try and stimulate the lower end of my bowel at the same time the laxido was working further up.

I don't know if you are meant to take lactulose long term as some laxatives can cause problems if taken that way.

GameSetMatch · 19/04/2020 14:36

Sainsbury’s sell suppositories on the shelf, I’m sure most supermarkets do, combined with few spoons of treacle should do the trick.

EyeShipMiceElf · 19/04/2020 14:36

I’m sure Lactulose is ok to take long term as it’s a softener rather than a stimulant.

So if I have a capful of lactulose every day that should keep eveyrhing soft? I’m terrified of it happening again

OP posts:
Feelthefear01 · 19/04/2020 16:47

I had this when I was about 12 weeks pregnant. Ended up in OOH I was so uncomfortable and never known anything like it, you will literally do anything to make it to away. I know take movicol every other day to keep me soft and drink loads of water and that really helps. As a nurse I find movicol to be a lot better then lacrulose, however is more expensive £15 pound for 30 sachets. Also if you have movicol in the house and it does happen again. You can take up to 5 sachets and that will get you going again. I do sympathise with you.

HowFurloughCanYouGo · 19/04/2020 17:23

We're a family of 5, 4 of which have experienced pooing problems.

Not one of us has ever had success with lactulose.

All it ever did for me is give me awful stomach cramps.
Horrible stuff.

Dowser · 19/04/2020 18:20

This was on an earlier mumsnet thread
The difference between muvicol and lactulose

I’ve never tried lactulose..I’m a bit wary of bacteria fermenting away..I get enough wind as it is

Lactulose and Movicol are different classes of laxative. Lactulose works by being fermented by bacteria in your gut which then draws water in, softening your poo - so it can cause bloating and wind as it ferments. It's also a lot weaker than Movicol - but one Movicol isn't going to run away with you, more that Lactulose may not work.

Movicol is completely inert - it passes through your gut unchanged and doesn't get absorbed. It works by attracting water to it so keeping water in your bowel rather than absorbed back into the body.

If you go to the pharmacy, Movicol is the brand name for Macrogol and they will almost certainly have a generic form of Macrogol in stock that is cheaper than Movicol and exactly the same thing.
