I’m watching Cats (2019) 😧 and would like more of this sort of horror please!

When I went to see life of pi at the cinema there was a woman sat next to me with her son who must have been about 6/7. He cried for a lot of it, and she clearly regretted her bad choice but wanted to get her moneys worth.

Ratbag
You both hid behind the sofa with monster house. Grin I think that’s so cute. It was my dds favourite for a long time. She’s 11 now and not in the least bit phased by anything like this or anything far more creepy. Maybe I spoiled it for her by mentioning several times it’s not real.... A couple of years ago or maybe when she’d just turned 10, I realised she’d crept in while I was watching The Walking Dead. I stopped it obvs. Luckily it had just been zombie slayings but I swear that that girl could watch them being slain all day without being affected.

My dds “horror movie” otoh is The Good Dinosaur. She cannot stand it because of parental death. I felt the same with Bambi when I watched it as a very young child. Different strokes for different folks.

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/04/2020 08:48

Oh and ET. Bawled my eyes through it. Still can’t watch it without dissolving into tears.

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 19/04/2020 08:51

@janaih I had the same when I went to see War of the World's it's a 12a and this guy had a kid of about 5 with him who was getting more and more distressed asking "what's that red stuff" and crying. All the dad kept saying was "shut up I'm trying to watch". If was awful.

As for Round the Twist I had forgotten about that. I was always scared of the one about the fox skin and the lemons. Mainly because my friend at the time had fox skins all over her house as her parents were keen fox hunters Envy not envy.

TW2013 · 19/04/2020 08:52

Dead poets society- great film but the suicide is too adult for a PG.

velocitygirl7 · 19/04/2020 08:53

The Spiderwick Chronicles, a pg and it utterly terrified my dc.
They are now 15 & 18 and still remember how scary it was!

Crystal87 · 19/04/2020 08:53

Was Return to Oz the one with the pumpkin head thing? If it was I was scared of that too and remember being confused that it was nothing like the wizard of oz.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 19/04/2020 08:56

Goosebumps - The ventriloquist dummy. Scared me. Ds and his friend loved it. It’s a great film very entertaining

The Witches is great but is scary at times

Watership Down. I went to the cinema to see this like many children did in the late 70’s and vividly remember the lights coming up a cinema full of sobbing kids and bewildered parents thinking wtf have I just put my child through. I still can’t listen to Bright Eyes without feeling sad the emotion attached to that film is still with me 40 years on.

Wizard of Oz. Always scared me and I felt sad for Dorothy I always thought she looked sad.

Alice in Wonderland - the book and cartoon are bad enough. The Tim Burton version is too much

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 19/04/2020 08:58

Loved Witches as a child and I also enjoyed Coraline as I got older. However I showed Coraline to my children at Halloween once, youngest found it frightening as well as Monster House.

There is a series on Netflix called Creeped Out, it’s a bit like Are You Afraid of the Dark?.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 19/04/2020 09:00

Pinocchio the BBC adaptation I think early 80’s look up the photos on line (not before bedtime)

Ylfa · 19/04/2020 09:06

😀😀😀 thank you for so many brilliant suggestions! I’m scared lockdown won’t go on for long enough to get through them all!

Agree with PP. We watched Back to the Future last week and the rape
Attempt bit is awful and goes on far too long

RandomSelection · 19/04/2020 09:21

Edward Scissorhands.

Only watched it a few years ago. I was horrified and traumatised by the end. I thought it was a fun, happy film. I literally bawled my eyes out at the inhumanity of it!! Shock Grin

Doobedoobedoobe · 19/04/2020 09:27

I can’t remember the name of it but what’s the one where the horse gets stuck in the bog and drowns? And the boy is desperately trying to pull him out by the reigns? That scared me for life!

Faffandahalf · 19/04/2020 09:33

Edward Scissorhands is a traumatic film. It’s all about outsiders and being shunned by society for being different. It’s desperately sad. And not for kids at all! Is it a PG??

RandomSelection · 19/04/2020 09:35

@Faffandahalf

Yes, I just looked it up on Amazon as I thought it was but wasn't 100%!!

MrsL2016 · 19/04/2020 10:14

I agree with loads of these. But another one that scared my little brother to death was Carry on Screaming.

Dieu · 19/04/2020 10:26

The Beastmaster! A film from the early 80s that scared the shit out of me.
Does anyone remember it? There was a spooky ring with an eyeball in it, and, I'm pretty sure, human sacrifices Shock

TitianaTitsling · 19/04/2020 10:29

@Doobedoobedoobe the 🎶neverending storeyyyyy. Aaa-aaaaaa storeyyy🎶

Mombie2016 · 19/04/2020 10:33

@Tonz Pinocchio is horrific, 30 years on when my DC watch it I leave the room, I can't stand it. Same for Watership Down.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 19/04/2020 10:34

The original Jumanji! Always terrified me as a kid, didn't stop me watching though.

Gingernaut · 19/04/2020 10:40

Darby O'Gill and the Little People is worth watching for Sean Connery's 'Irish' accent alone.

The Tunnel of Terror scene in the original Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (decapitating a chicken, anyone) was awful.

kikisparks · 19/04/2020 10:51

Not a film but the tv series Animals of Farthing Wood was traumatising.

Popfan · 19/04/2020 10:59

They had some weird ideas on age ratings in the 80s / early 90s! Back to the Future as others have said - apart from the attempted rape and mother / son thing, there's the shooting of doc at the start and also a lot of swearing!
Jurassic park too - a pg! Bizarre - it's scary and the bit where the T-Rex eats the guy in the toilet is fairly horrifying. Both great films but def not PG!!

tutorwho · 19/04/2020 11:01

Are you Afraid of the Dark is on Youtube.

I was creeped out by the goblin monsters in Willow.
