I've just binge watched Life on Mars. I loved it, the ending made me cry.
I was just wondering if Ashes to Ashes is worth a watch?

It is brilliant, watch it immediately.

user1471515926 · 18/04/2020 19:11

Absolutely.
It's not quite as good, but still very much in the spirit.

Oldhaggard · 18/04/2020 19:13

I'd say it's not quite as good, but maybe because you know the format by then. But it's definitely worth watching. I loved it.
nothing at all to do with my wierd crush on Gene Hunt

WisestIsShe · 18/04/2020 19:14

Another yes from me.

AliasGrape · 18/04/2020 19:14

We just binged it on iplayer too. Rewatch for me as I’d seen it when it was on tv the first time, but first time for DH.

I remember loving ashes to ashes when it was on too, so we’re going to do that next.

Pelleas · 18/04/2020 19:16

It's worth a watch but not as good. The last series is the best one.

ineedsun · 18/04/2020 19:17

We're introducing DS (16) to Life on Mars, think he'll like Ashes to Ashes more because he'll 'get' more of the references.

WildImaginings · 18/04/2020 19:17

I love Ashes to Ashes. It gets better as it goes on.

amusedbush · 18/04/2020 19:18

Oh, I’ve not watched it but I might now.

I loved Life on Mars, though. I have a massive crush on Hunt, even though I’d probably despise anyone like him if I met them in real life BlushGrin

Vicliz24 · 18/04/2020 19:20

Oh definitely! Both are epic and Gene is so strangely hot

devildeepbluesea · 18/04/2020 19:21

Definitely worth a watch, the end of the story arc is absolutely unmissable!

ShinyRuby · 18/04/2020 19:26

I loved Life on Mars, especially Gene Hunt! Ashes to Ashes wasn't quite as good without Sam Tyler but well worth watching. I think there were a couple of series & the ending was pretty good if I remember rightly.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 18/04/2020 19:46

Yes its worth watching but then I would say that as I was young in the 80s and I enjoyed seeing the fashions and hearing the music too

Life on Mars I enjoyed as well .

I too had a strange crush on the character Gene Hunt . The ending was amazing but I would have ended it slightly differently but that's what fan fiction sites are for I suppose.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 18/04/2020 19:47

@amusedbush same here .

In real life I would think what an arrogant, bombastic dinosaur (though there were men like him all over in the 70s and 80s) thinking sexist bigot . but there was something that drew me in .

MigginsMs · 18/04/2020 19:48

I love it, need to watch more Ashes to Ashes too, last time I started watching it a few years ago it got taken off Netflix

Corneysjazzband · 18/04/2020 19:51

Absolutely! I found the box DVD set of Ashes to Ashes in a charity shop a few weeks ago, not long before lockdown. Can't wait for DH to go back to work so I can watch it! O

Izzabellasasperella · 18/04/2020 19:52

Thanks I'll give it a go. I was more into the Sam Tyler character but the Gene-isms were very funny.

Izzabellasasperella · 18/04/2020 20:00

All the episodes of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes are on iplayer.
I'm going in!

About to watch episode 6 of Life on Mars. How did I miss this when it was on originally. Love it.

thenightsky · 18/04/2020 20:07

I'd forgotten that Sam wasn't in Ashes to Ashes Shock

I knew there was a reason it wasn't as good as Life on Mars.

WhatTimeIsItCuckoo · 18/04/2020 20:15

Yes absolutely, loved it and another great ending. Haven't read full thread but just spotted another poster talking about weird Gene Hunt crush - me too! I found him hugely attractive and couldn't really explain why - or daren't explain why is probably closer to the truth Grin

Liverbird77 · 18/04/2020 20:34

I actually preferred Ashes to Ashes.
It got so creepy towards the end!

Kirstymc159 · 18/04/2020 20:37

I also preferred ashes to ashes. Loved the ending. It made it all make sense

PerpetualCircle · 18/04/2020 20:49

Oh god I love both Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, the latter currently on tonight on the Drama Chanel, although I would recommend watching Ashes in sequence, the first episode has references to San Tyler, which explains the more knowing tone of DCI Drake.
Jon Sims , Keeler Hawes and of course Phil Glenister put in anazing performances, I fancy Sam Tyler like mad in Life On MarsSmile
I think it’s my fav TV show ever ( closely followed my Twin Peaks).
Read an article last week that they are bringing it back for another seriesGrin It will be about DCI Hunt’s return and set in the 70’s and 80’s London and Manchester. I almost wet my pants can’t wait!!!
