Any other nurses care to join me with a glass of red

Or white or whatever takes your fancy? How was your day?
Emotional, weird day today but came home, did the usual decontamination routine which allowed me to cry in the shower before seeing the kids and have now binge watched crap telly and feeling more positive with the prospect of a weekend off.

Am going to try hard to avoid the news, social media and texts from colleagues and try to pretend the C word doesn’t exist!

Mad day today, no CV19 though. Tired and fed up managing sectioned patients who have no capacity and want to go out. I'm T total so if you all can raise me some zzzz for a brill nights sleep before doing it all again tomorrow. I will be grateful!

Bottomplasters · 18/04/2020 20:55

That sounded awful. I mean it's awful and I'm fed up for them not for me!

pontiouspilates · 18/04/2020 21:02

I'm an Allied Health Professional (children's therapies) and have been redeployed as an HCA on a covid ward. 1 hrs training on bed baths, making a bed and basic obs. Witnessed my first death today. Trying to process it all and work out how the hell I ended up here. Massive respect to all of you!

pontiouspilates · 18/04/2020 21:03

Oh, and a big glass of red please 🍷

Mlou32 · 18/04/2020 21:26

@DuchessofBolton are you an RMN then or an RGN who's been put on a mental health ward?

Lemonblast · 18/04/2020 21:27

Pontious you are brilliant. Those who have been redeployed are amazing. We have school nurses and continence service nurses with us in covid palliative care and they have been amazing Smile

Thank you lemon I don't feel at all amazing, so that means a lot!

EllaPaella · 18/04/2020 21:40

Raising a glass of red to you all tonight. I am a specialist nurse but have been redeployed back to the wards. 4 shifts in and it's coming back to me eventually, I am super chuffed I have now managed to do the drug round and negotiate the new electronic drug cupboard system. It's like an episode of challenge Anneka.
Worst thing is spending 13 hours in goggles, mask etc. I have such a headache by the end of the shift. I've been staggered by how brave the patients are all being, it's very humbling. It can't be pleasant being in hospital, alone with no family contact and not being able to see the faces of those looking after you.
I'm back in tomorrow so just the one glass of red for me tonight.
Stay safe all 🍷

Zebramumma · 18/04/2020 21:51

RMN here just getting to the bottom of a much needed glass of red, cheers all.

I’m a nurse specialist in eating disorders, desperately trying to keep my patients alive on much less support than I normally provide & terrified they won’t all survive. I’ve worked with some of my caseload for years & am very fond of them, when I do have to see them face to face I’m terrified I’ll pass covid onto them. Some are so unwell they can’t not go out for their exercise despite the risks.

To all my RGN colleagues, you are amazing & we RMNs will be here to support you if you need a friendly ear or shoulder to cry on. God red wine makes me emotional Blush

Lemonblast · 18/04/2020 22:31

Zebramumma thank you for all that you are doing. Eating disorders are an illness very close to my own heart. So challenging at the ‘best’ of times-I can’t imagine how difficult it is for you and your clients right now.

From an SHO thank you so much to you all, you’re working your socks off! ❤️

Sewrainbow · 18/04/2020 22:34

Hats, goggles and face masks off to all of you who do whole shifts in the full ppe.

Radiographer here who's had far too much chardonnay these last 2 nights after completing a week of night shifts. We do 2 hour rotations in the get up in our covid room and for the portables.

We've all said we don't know how the nurses cope for full shifts doing physical and complex mental tasks dressed up, I can't hear properly with the mask on I can't see properly through the visors, it must be so hard so I'll get a round in for you all too in appreciation...

Polkadotpjs · 18/04/2020 22:46

Have a round or however many you like on me too. It sounds a bit hackneyed to say you’re amazing but you bloody are.

3rdNamechange · 18/04/2020 22:48

Ooh a large red please. I'm on a night shift.
Updating skills this week in case of redeployment.

joystir59 · 18/04/2020 22:57

Not NHS. Thank you. My card is behind the bar for the duration, and this bar serves great tea and coffee as well as award winning cocktails and everything else.

jaggynettle · 18/04/2020 23:03

Nurse Manager here. Four gins in. Trying so hard to keep my staff and my patients safe. Seems like a thankless task at the moment - can't do right for doing wrong but know emotions are running high for us all.

NewAccountForCorona · 18/04/2020 23:32

Can I join you and raise a glass to my daughter who is working with Covid patients in London. She is meant to be home this weekend for her grandparents 60th wedding anniversary/family reunion, but obviously that isn't happening. I really miss her.

Finishing her third night in a row, but is off tomorrow (before moving back to ICU on Tuesday) so will join her for a glass via Zoom tomorrow night.

Wine and Flowers to you all.

SimplySteveRedux · 19/04/2020 00:06

You're all super amazing, enjoy your tipples, much respect. 💓💓💓

princessspotify · 19/04/2020 00:41

I'm a community nurse. We are busy but not as busy as the amazing staff on the wards. In my team feels like the calm before the storm as we keep getting told to expect lots of discharges. Mainly palliatives.

Lemonblast · 19/04/2020 08:31

Morning to all just finishing the night shift. Sleep well Wink

And a quick mask question. Has anybody managed to get hold of the masks with the perspex panel cut out so patients can see your mouth when you speak ? And if so are they comfortable enough to use? I imagine that they would get steamed up pretty quickly!

ChestyNut · 19/04/2020 09:38

Has anyone found a way to stop eye protection fogging up?

bloodyhellsbellsx · 19/04/2020 10:00

Extra big cheers to those redeployed! I’ve moved from my office down to ED but still doing the same job role, some staff have been moved from GUM, outpatients and specialist roles to front line ED, feel so sorry for them! Helped a girl mix IV meds that she hadn’t done for over 10 years, don’t know what the implications for accountability would be should mistakes be made! Scary times.

I can’t answer the PPE questions as all we have is a flimsy surgical mask and one visor to share between me, the other practitioner and the consultant.

Hermanhessescat · 19/04/2020 10:40

ChestyNut it's a pain isn't it ! Doesn't do it with the big visors, just the glasses type ones. It tends to happen for me only when I'm really hot and bothered so maybe it's all about body temp. A colleague said it was because my mask wasn't tight enough and I should adjust it but to me it felt no different...

Lemonblast · 19/04/2020 11:23

My glasses/goggles are ok with FFP3 but the surgical masks I’m finding tricky. No matter how tightly I bend it round my nose my glasses still steam up!

dd has two dental nurses on her ward helping out. I really take my hats off to them; they volunteered for the role.
