Royal Albert hall 25th anniversary show. Can watch for 48 hours from tonight on YouTube. “The shows must go on”

Watching now. It’s fantastic. It was Jesus Christ Superstar last week and that was great too.

@longtompot I think they're 4 previous phantoms. I thought the bald headed guy was the best!

@Dickorydockwhatthe no, you can't watch JCSS. They're only up for the weekends I'm afraid

I am watching now. It is my favourite. Have seen it in London and New York. Am gutted I missed Joseph last week

BabbleBee · 18/04/2020 15:11

I didn’t enjoy Joseph much at all, the female teacher / narrator was really irritating.

I loved the Phantoms all singing together, but Sarah Brightman - not so much. She’s had way too much work done on her face so she was expressionless, and her voice sounded like she was really pushing her limits.

JCSS was great, enjoyed that. Tim Minchin was amazing, he conveyed so much emotion.

Which show is it next week?

CoolCarrie · 18/04/2020 15:15

It was brilliant, goosebumps when the music soared at the start.

CoolCarrie · 18/04/2020 15:18

I also enjoyed JCSS last week as did Dh and DS as they hadn’t seen it before., Mel C was excellent. We did all see Phantom in the theatre a few years ago and enjoyed it very much.

Ohfrigginghellers · 18/04/2020 15:34

I don't remember seeing Sarah Brightman and more than one phantom. I turned off when they were bowing at the end. Did I miss something?

BabbleBee · 18/04/2020 15:54

@ohfrigginghellers You missed a huge finale with the previous NY and London companies coming on stage then more singing from 4 Phantoms, the current one and Brightman.

ACupOfCoffee · 18/04/2020 16:37

Who were the four men singing at the end with Sarah Brightman? Did they each play the Phantom? @longtompot

The four phantoms were (from left to right)

Anthony Warlow (Australia/New Zealand)

John Owen Jones (according to Wiki the longest-serving Phantom in London)

Colm Wilkinson (originated the role of Phantom during the early workshop phases and at the Sydmonton Festival. Was offered role of Phantom when it debuted in the West End, but he chose to play Valjean in Les Mis. He went on to play the Phantom in Toronto).

Peter Joback (London, Broadway & Stockholm)

Michael Crawford was also there, but he didn't sing, other than with the rest of the cast/previous casts/production team.

Ohfrigginghellers · 18/04/2020 20:04

Ah nevermind I'd already spent too long watching it and the children were demanding my attention.

Freddiemercurysjeans · 18/04/2020 20:29

Just finished watching it - great to see the finale and all the past phantoms .
The version of Joseph was rubbish which was a shame because the musical is ace.
JCS is my favourite so far, never seen it properly - Tim Minchin blew me away.
Hopeful for School of Rock next week!

Standrewsschool · 18/04/2020 20:49

Didn’t realise it was only on for 24 hoursSad . Watched the first half this afternoon and was planning to watch the second half tomorrow.

BackforGood · 18/04/2020 21:20

Just watched Phantom. It's been my least favourite so far. Though, tbf, I didn't particularly enjoy it when I saw it live many, many years ago.

I thought JCSS last week was superb. Really, really enjoyed that.

I also enjoyed Joseph as I have the score and was able to sing along without 'la la'ing or making up the words Grin but I have seen that one before.

These Friday night treats are almost making me hope this all doesn't come to an end too soon Blush

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/04/2020 22:51

I gave Joseph a miss as I don't love the Donny version.

Loved JCS. And really loved Tim's performance.

It's been while since I've seen Phantom. I forgot how LONG it was. Brilliant quality singers.

CoolCarrie · 18/04/2020 22:56

It’s still up on YouTube I just watched it again!

CrochetBug · 18/04/2020 22:59

@BackforGood same Blush we cant usually afford more than 1 show per year (and I'm talking local theatre not London) or at a push 2. Although we have seen a few London shows as Christmas presents. So I'm loving that this is making it freeaffordable. I will make a small donation as soon as I can though!

Freddiefox · 18/04/2020 23:00

It’s still up on YouTube I just watched it again!

I can’t find it

Titsywoo · 18/04/2020 23:01

I love that bit at the end with Michael Crawford and the other phantoms. So emotional. John Owen Jones is one of my favourites voice wise. His wife was also year 1 teacher for both my kids at primary!

CoolCarrie · 18/04/2020 23:02

It’s under The Shows Must Go On on YouTube

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 18/04/2020 23:05

John Owen Jones has such a lovely voice, it does things to me. I saw him in Phantom and he was great. I think Ramin is gorgeous though. And Gerard Butler (in the film version) 😍😍😍

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/04/2020 21:07

Well....just watched the sequel. And I'm......disappointed.

BabbleBee · 24/04/2020 21:24

@DrMadelineMaxwell me too. Didn’t stick the whole thing out. ALW was live yesterday explaining that it wasn’t what he’d hoped it to be as he had prostate cancer during its production. He also said this was his ‘romantic side’ - what a weird concept of romance!!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/04/2020 21:28

Also (massive spoiler ahead)....when did the Phantom and Christine manage to do THAT without us noticing in the original?

BabbleBee · 24/04/2020 21:37

I know!! What’s that about? And she didn’t love him once she realised that he wasn’t her dead father’s spirit...

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/04/2020 21:53

Ewwww......
