Ken Bruce. A calm oasis...

I did the weekly shop, this morning. And as is normal now, found the whole experience quite unsettling. But the drive to and from the supermarket, was like a warm hug. No mention of coronavirus, or impending doom...Just the calming voice of Mr Bruce...I could almost pretend that all is well with the world....What's your happy place, in these uncertain times?

Yes, agree that Ken Bruce is so calming at this time. Also find Steve Wright reassuring too. Selfishly, I hope neither have any time off planned soon!

Whatthefunk · 16/04/2020 13:19

I think it's the a taste of normality he brings, when nothing else feels normal...

Although, with the greatest of respect, I have to disagree about Steve Wright.....Shudder Grin

My abiding memory of this time in years to come will be hearing Popmaster while doing a jigsaw.

ChipsAndKetchup · 16/04/2020 13:25

Love Ken Bruce. And strangely find Jeremy Vine quite comforting too

Whatthefunk · 16/04/2020 13:28

How lovely!
Jeremy Vine, is a little coronavirus heavy, at the moment. Not a single mention on the Ken Bruce show. Just the same warmth and wit, as always. Best broadcaster at the BBC Smile

Wish Ken was on all day. Wish SW wasn't on at all.

Love you Ken Smile

HarrySnotter · 16/04/2020 13:31

Agreed. He makes everything feel alright to me.

RubbishSwimmer · 16/04/2020 13:34

Yes there’s definitely something about Ken Bruce. Very comforting presence.

I want to say safe pair of hands, but that sounds a bit wet, doing the man a disservice. Perhaps very talented broadcaster is better.

CourageCamille · 16/04/2020 13:34

It's just me and Radio 2 in the office these days. It's like having a friend round for two and a half hours when Ken is on. He's been with me in several MRI machines too. A true Master of his Art!

notagaincharlie · 16/04/2020 13:35

I agree. I also get the same uplift from Liza Tarbuck on Saturday.

Sara Cox has stayed crazily upbeat during this whole time, which is great as well.

I'm not a fan of Steve Wright at all.....

Whatthefunk · 16/04/2020 13:48

Is he broadcasting from home ?

Rosie2000 · 16/04/2020 13:48

I agree about Ken and strangely like a previous poster also fund Steve W comforting too having g not listened to his show for years.
I’ve also been listening to Scala radio too which had been excellent.

Whatthefunk · 16/04/2020 13:50

We mostly listen to Absolute radio, at home, as Ds likes the music, but I must admit I look forward to the weekly drive to enjoy Ken's show

notagaincharlie · 16/04/2020 13:54

Yes, Ken is at home. His first show from there sounded 'odd' but he's back in the swing now!

TSSDNCOP · 16/04/2020 14:00

I LOVE Ken's show. The number of people IRL that listen to Popmaster is brilliant. I have converted many over the years.

I just miss the partnership with Lynne Sad

MutteringDarkly · 16/04/2020 14:04

100% with you on the Ken Bruce love. In fact, I may treat myself to some extra Ken Bruce by listening to mornings I've missed. I also miss Lynne.

The only thing as comforting is watching Dinnerladies. Now that I think about it, there are similar stoic good-humoured "let's just keep going and find the small joys where we can" attitudes in both.

Whatthefunk · 16/04/2020 14:08

Love dinnerladies! I rewatch the boxset often. Victoria Wood was a wonderful writer

Oh I love Ken. Especially when he gently chides a Popmaster contestant for procrastination.
And I thoroughly enjoy Lisa Tarbuck and Johnnie Walker.

fluffy71 · 16/04/2020 14:12

I have to agree. Don’t usually listen to him but switched on ten mins before Jeremy and thought ooh I’ll listen to him again, so calming! Have to say Sara Cox great too, playing some great music this last few weeks

Defenestratethecat · 16/04/2020 14:12

TSSDNCOP, DH has converted whole offices over the years to Popmaster - to the extent that one of his colleagues was on it a while back! Everything stops for coffee and Popmaster. I believe they’re all still listening while WFH and discuss it during important Zoom conferences.......

I’m an inveterate R4 listener but am joining DH for coffee and Popmaster every morning, and I’m insisting he listens to The Archers (incidentally also a covid free zone, for now at least) with me every evening with a glass of wine.

Whatthefunk · 16/04/2020 15:19

I have to ask, what on earth is TSSDNCOP??

OP posts:
eggcream · 16/04/2020 16:57

It's someones user name.
They have posted on your thread.

Flashinggreen · 16/04/2020 17:00

I hate popmaster, it’s the noise at it counts down the seconds. I have to turn it off

TheWordmeister · 16/04/2020 17:00

I love Ken too. I visit building sites for work and everything stops for pop master!
