At a loss with my Kindle...

Can somebody possibly help me? I have a kindle device and once upon a time had it linked to a laptop. I now neither have that laptop or the connecting cables I don't think.

I've purchased some books on my online Amazon account - but how the heck do I get them on to my actual kindle.... does anyone have any ideas or inclination to help me? Ever so grateful for assistance for a technical idiot....

Does your Kindle have WiFi?

Redglitter · 16/04/2020 12:04

Make sure its connected to wifi and they should download automatically. I've never used my computer or a cable to get my books

Pelleas · 16/04/2020 12:07

Yes, they should be 'cloud' stored as part of your Amazon account so you need to log into that on your Kindle. They will show under 'All' rather than 'Downloaded' in 'Your Library' - you just select a book to read to download it onto the Kindle itself.

It goes from the amazon account to the kindle, don't worry about the laptop. Your kindle just needs to be charged and have wifi switched on.

When you buy a book, get it to download to the correct device- the kindle.

To see books you've already bought, go into your kindle account in Amazon. Look at your library list, click the book and 'send to kindle (or whatever the device is listed as).

SpoonBlender · 16/04/2020 12:10

If your kindle has wifi, you can connect it direct to Amazon and when you buy books they'll Just Appear (or you can push them through Amazon's page for Devices).

If you don't have wifi, you can use any microUSB cord to connect it to a computer of any sort and copy .mobi or .azw or .pdf files across manually. MicroUSB is the one with the little D shape end - same as many phones, GPSes, headphones etc charge cables, you probably have half a dozen of them lying around. If you try one and it doesn't work, it's only for charging - try another. You'll be able to charge the Kindle with it too.

Just a thought! Is your email address still the same as it was when you used the kindle? You can change it in settings on the kindle

Alwayswithalacrity · 16/04/2020 12:19

I mean the email you use in amazon. I use a kindle app on my iPad now to download and read books. Ive just checked the Old kindle fire that my husband uses and all my books also appear on there.

dustycaramel · 16/04/2020 12:21

wow - thank you all! I'm going to work through all this and get sorted, may return if doesn't work! email address could be an issue but going to get sorted! thank you so much!

Hmmm. My device was on aeroplane mode so have corrected that and am now on wifi. Been to the manage my devices page and set my kindle as the default device and made sure the two new books have been sent there. Still not showing up in my library which is a bit weird. Have checked under 'all'.

Have you synced it?

onalongsabbatical · 16/04/2020 13:23

Open the menu on the kindle screen - does it say items downloading? Click on that they should be there?

GreenTulips · 16/04/2020 14:10

Have you gone into the books and ‘deliver to?’

Quarantimespringclean · 16/04/2020 14:15

I’m following avidly and rooting for the OP to sort this. The thought of my kindle not working fills me with dread at the best of times. For it to not work now would be horrendous. Particularly as I’ve lent one of my emergency back up kindles to a friend.

dustycaramel · 16/04/2020 14:25

Aw thanks Quarantine! It's just worked! I don't know what I did though, it just seemed to sync itself but after a while?? I am so happy! This is the first time I have had a functional Kindle! Any recommendations??

dustycaramel · 16/04/2020 14:27

just bought a book and it popped in immediately! this is awesome!

OP posts:
Pelleas · 16/04/2020 14:29

It might have been downloading updates if you hadn't used it for a while which would have delayed the sync. Glad it's working! Re. recommendations - what sort of books do you enjoy?

SpoonBlender · 16/04/2020 14:29

Hurray! Yeah, can take an hour or three. If it's on wifi when you buy a book, it'll getsent immediately (usually!) but otherwise it just tries now and again. You can pull by using the Sync button though, thatshould work right away.

Anyone panicking about losing theirs - remember you can get the Kindle app for android and apple phones, Windows and Mac, and it'll sync up the same as a hardware kindle. Not as good for reading on, but still better than nothing.

dustycaramel · 16/04/2020 14:37

I quite like a good mid market mystery / crime - but nothing with dead children and it has to be well written. I have always enjoyed Kate Atkinson stuff, and just read something I loved on my last holiday, Versions of Us.

OP posts:
Pelleas · 16/04/2020 14:40

I enjoyed Versions of Us, but I was disappointed when I tried another by the same author (can't remember which as it was a paperback and went to the charity shop).

Have you tried Sophie Hannah?

HeffalumpsCantDance · 16/04/2020 14:43

I love the Kindle daily deal, the monthly deals that change on 1st and often have hundreds of books for 99p and BookBub that will recommend books for you.
Enjoy!

BlingLoving · 16/04/2020 14:44

The thought of my kindle not working fills me with dread at the best of times.

Me too. Although this is mitigated by Kindle apps on my phone, computer and IPAD!

Op - glad you got it to work. The wifi function is fantastic. I loved the old 3G functionality too but as I can always use my phone as a wifi hotspot I am over my sadness when the 3G stopped working!

dustycaramel · 16/04/2020 15:23

Thank you I will look at Sophie Hannah.

I'm happy too and grateful for your help, MN at its best!
