Have/will you lose you job due to this virus?

I realise I sound like I’m the DM researching for a story here- I am not. I hate the Daily Mail.

But I wanted to know, for those that don’t mind saying- have you or might you lose your job due to Coronavirus? And if so why?

I am so far expecting my line of work should be ok (accounting) but if all my clients cease trading then maybe not.

My OH is also so far ok but it’s starting to look a bit worrying if this all gets worse/ goes on for longer. He is a hotel manager.

What are you going to do? I feel like I should put a plan in place- god knows what though Confused

And lastly- I hope you will be ok Flowers

I'm in hospitality too, and yes I'm worried. Small independent place, all staff furloughed. We were just starting to pick up a bit after the winter lull.
If we reopen I'm largely one of the safe ones, because of my job role. However that's not set in stone, I'm at less risk than others of not losing my job, but not 'safe' even if we do survive and reopen.
Worried about longer term as well, while I think we'll probably be rammed to the rafters initially as people celebrate being out, I can't see the vast majority having the disposable income they did prior to this, I certainly won't, it'll take me a couple of months to get myself straight again where eating out, days out and boozing down the pub will have to wait in favour of bills that need to be caught up on.

DreamChaser23 · 14/04/2020 18:25

Hmm it depends on furlough. I don't know if the government will extend it for another 3 months as it ends on June. Or worse waiting for a vaccine means at least another year of furlough is required or huge job losses I am not sure if the government will furlough for a year if needed.

My job is in the public sector as contract worker haven't worked in a month cause it has been so quiet and demand for new tourists have dried up

DreamChaser23 · 14/04/2020 18:27

And lastly I hate the DM as well OP. This crisis has taught me that many people who judged those on benefits now complain it is not enough to live on as they have lost their jobs. You never know what is around the corner..

Not me but DH lost his work as his industry is closed (freelancer in an arts field).

Newkitty · 14/04/2020 18:34

I expect my entire industry to die. Also a freelancer in the arts. Not eligible for any govt help because of paye/ self employed split. All contracts for the next 18 months cancelled.

Dp is also a contract worker, but in the public sector. He has been told to expect a 60% pay cut as the best scenario.

DonnaDarko · 14/04/2020 18:37

I work in fundraising for a private company. Fundraising in general has had a major hit and a quarter of the company has been furloughed, including myself. If the lockdown continues beyond a few months, I suspect I won't have a job to go back to

Chrisinthemorning · 14/04/2020 18:40

Dentist.
Off without pay for the foreseeable future.
Once the profession starts back I doubt I will join them, it will be risky until I’ve had it or there’s a vaccine and I’m not happy to catch it at work due to viral load.
I’m thinking 2 year career break. I will be needed by DS anyway- my parents and MIL did a lot of childcare before.

AbsolomChautney · 14/04/2020 18:41

Some - yes. A few freelance contracts amounting to 5K odd but luckily (hopefully) the Arts Council are being kind of incredible, so fingers crossed for funding.

ItchyScratch · 14/04/2020 18:42

Oh I’m so sorry for all of you.
It really is a shit situation that even two months ago I never imagined.

I really hope everyone gets out the other side of this.

No l will probably be fine l work in care home. The old people always need care.

Norma27 · 14/04/2020 18:44

I've had my job offer withdrawn. Absolutely gutted. They have told me they will contact me if anything becomes available in the future.

OddestSock · 14/04/2020 18:46

I work for an airline. I have no clue what it's going to look like in a few months.

Almahart · 14/04/2020 18:51

Fully expect to lose my job. I work for a charity

Namelesswonder · 14/04/2020 19:01

DH lost his job, he is our main breadwinner. My fulltime NHS salary doesn’t cover the bills / mortgage and food, but it’s too high to receive benefits. So we can have a home or we eat. Bit shit really. On the bright side, we can live off savings for a few months and will just have to pray he can get something new soon.

hm246 · 14/04/2020 19:20

Reception manager in a hotel but currently on maternity leave. My hotel was struggling before I left so a high chance of it not re-opening. DH is in banking so secure for now. We are budgeting and changing our habits to live of the one wage.

trilbydoll · 14/04/2020 19:23

Might get made redundant, we'll see. Not going to worry about it until it happens, that's the route to madness!

Pelleas · 14/04/2020 19:25

Not in the short term - we are busier than ever due to the virus. In the medium to long term it's very possible that the impact will lead the company to make cuts, so my job might go in a 'restructure'.

WinterBerry7 · 14/04/2020 19:30

Currently furloughed but think the likelihood is that I won’t have a job to go back to. The company I work for were in the middle of a vital sale process which has been halted, and at the minute we cannot trade so we have zero money coming in at an already challenging time.
I work in HR (learning & development)

Bargebill19 · 14/04/2020 19:33

Lost my job because I dared to say that my care home area manager was wrong to insist that we accepted a covid19 positive patient into a covid free care home.

thunderthighsohwoe · 14/04/2020 19:36

I’m a teacher so hopefully not, but DP is self employed in a non essential field so it’s not looking good for him.

YorkshireParentalPerson · 14/04/2020 19:36

Yep, mines gone, i got a weeks notice. They won't consider furlough. Weirdly I am really busy, the only person who can do my role and they are still making me redundant as apparently my role can be automated, it can't and if someone does not do that role, the company will not be able to fulfill its obligations and will go under anyway. I'm devastated, it came without warning and had made me feel properly shit. Landed us in it as a family too, just as we'd started to get things into a good place and it's all gone.

amber763 · 14/04/2020 19:38

I work in travel. More than 50% of staff have been laid off. I'm working from home for now, wage cut with talk of furlough once we've dealt with all the cancellations but im not sure the company will make it if I'm honest.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 14/04/2020 19:39

I work for a university. I'm not in immediate danger of losing my job, but there will be significant belt tightening next academic year so who knows? It all depends how long this all goes on for?

DH works for an organisation funded by a set proportion of the annual profit made by Unilever. Fortunately people still need to buy washing powder and groceries so it should be OK, but we're in such uncharted territory, who knows?

Random18 · 14/04/2020 19:42

I may be OK.

I am getting more and more concerned for DH's job. Its always been a bit ropey but things were looking good just a few weeks ago.

It won't go now but possibly in next year.

Its a well paid skilled industrial job. There is no chance of him getting a similar job with similar pay.

Mines may be a bit safer but who knows.

Starting to get pretty worried now and getting so frustrated when people say economy doesn't matter.
