Have/will you lose you job due to this virus?

I realise I sound like I’m the DM researching for a story here- I am not. I hate the Daily Mail.

But I wanted to know, for those that don’t mind saying- have you or might you lose your job due to Coronavirus? And if so why?

I am so far expecting my line of work should be ok (accounting) but if all my clients cease trading then maybe not.

My OH is also so far ok but it’s starting to look a bit worrying if this all gets worse/ goes on for longer. He is a hotel manager.

What are you going to do? I feel like I should put a plan in place- god knows what though Confused

And lastly- I hope you will be ok Flowers

I have a small business. All work involves face to face with clients. So if things continue then I'll have to let my premises go (can't afford to keep renting without an income), which means I'll have to stop work 😓

Work in the care home industry was not directly involved in care more systems and support admin. Have been redeployed to a care home for office support job seems secure for now but I’m not sure about my original job in the long term.
DH is self employed gardener and we live in fairly affluent area so his clients have kept him on mostly and he can work in solitude. Both lucky in this respect that income can continue.

nerozero · 15/04/2020 07:47

I'm an adult social worker so I think I'm safe - obviously it's extremely busy at the moment.

DH is an engineer type (the figures and plans sort). He's had a 10% pay cut but as he's WFH with no travel costs it should break even.

I was hating my job before this and am hating it even more now but that aside I'm lucky I have it and lucky it's community based not hospital etc so can WFH and if I need to make an urgent visit it's PPE and all precautions, everything else can be done via telephone.

ifowaa · 15/04/2020 07:58

I think my job is safe.
All depends on the economy and how terrible the recession is.
I wouldn't be able to live on UC (mortgage) so I would be in trouble if unemployed for more than a few months.
I'm really worried about that, more worried than I am of getting Co-vid.

DinosApple · 15/04/2020 08:05

I'm a TA, but my contract is up in July and I'm not sure if it will be renewed.

DH works in construction which has ground to a halt. He's currently in furloughed. It's wait and see there, he's the latest member of staff so may be first out.

Farming will need lots of pickers over the next few months so that may be an option for one of us (DC are primary age so can't be left).

Rebelwithallthecause · 15/04/2020 08:07

I don’t predict to as work in construction for a company that has enough on the books to sustain us for the next few years at least.

BertieBotts · 15/04/2020 08:14

Had an offer withdrawn as well. I'm also gutted about it. It's frustrating as not lost anything as such but obviously hardly anyone is still hiring, so it's very complicated to actually work out what I should do next.

daisybrown37 · 15/04/2020 08:27

I’m being made redundant but not due to the virus, this was a preplanned restructure that they have decided to proceed with. Will be unemployed in July as they will make us work our notice. They do not need to make these cut backs for business survival (social care so demand is still there). At least I will have pay until July.

There are no roles I can apply for locally and one role who wanted to interview me have put this on hold due to lockdown.

mummyje20 · 15/04/2020 09:22

We're both in education so hopefully ok. But I am due to start my mat leave very soon and have a sinking feeling that the (money hungry, grabby cow) exec head will try and screw me over somehow.

thismeansnothing · 15/04/2020 11:06

Following on my earlier post I'm at a recruitment session for a local supermarket. I have been stood queueing for 80 mins and I got here early. All for probably just a handful of positions. It's like something out of thatchers britain

Rebelwithallthecause · 15/04/2020 11:46

@thismeansnothing are you in quite a struggling area with people out of work?

The supermarkets here are desperate for people.

EwwSprouts · 15/04/2020 12:12

DH works in manufacturing & I expected the plant to close due to Brexit. But Coronavirus has increased demand. I work P/T public sector and expect no change.

TreacherousPissFlap · 15/04/2020 12:19

Emergency services here so safer than ever I imagine Confused
DH is a tradesman so should be ok once the lockdown is over. He is however past retirement age (but financially unable to retire) so I worry if there are redundancies needed later he will be the first to go.

FraughtwithGin · 15/04/2020 13:51

I just have, but by mutual agreement. I am a contractor (IT) but the tasks I have been performing are not really compatible with WFH (I am not in the UK).
If I am totally honest it is a relief as the work has been causing me a very high degree of stress without much opportunity to work it off.
Fortunately I am mortgage-free with no debts and a cushion of savings so there is no immediate impact. I may just give myself time off and do the garden until things settle down again. Worst case scenario is that I get to spend 1 week at one of my favourite hotels in June as I have already paid for the reservation and cannot cancel :-)
I do feel very sorry for all those in highly-impacted industries, where it is unclear how or even if they will recover to the same level.

YeOldeTrout · 15/04/2020 15:48

I don't know yet. Officially I have a job & unofficially I have a job offer, but officially I have neither contract nor offer. I suspect the funder will find some emergency clause to invoke their right to withdraw the funds. And I won't find out before ... August?

lboogy · 15/04/2020 22:08

I work for a tech company in marketing. I suspect there will be redundancies in the next three months or so.
