Have/will you lose you job due to this virus?

I realise I sound like I’m the DM researching for a story here- I am not. I hate the Daily Mail.

But I wanted to know, for those that don’t mind saying- have you or might you lose your job due to Coronavirus? And if so why?

I am so far expecting my line of work should be ok (accounting) but if all my clients cease trading then maybe not.

My OH is also so far ok but it’s starting to look a bit worrying if this all gets worse/ goes on for longer. He is a hotel manager.

What are you going to do? I feel like I should put a plan in place- god knows what though Confused

And lastly- I hope you will be ok Flowers

Freelance in the arts, all my contracts have been cancelled. Waiting for the self employed help in June with nothing in the meantime

feelinguseless78 · 14/04/2020 21:44

Social worker so I should be ok. I hope.

DH, unsure.

CountFosco · 14/04/2020 21:48

I'm a scientist who works in pharmaceuticals. The entire industry has gone into overdrive, my linkedin news thread is full of research and trials for anti-virals and vaccines, there is very little talk of anything else. My job is secure (we are key workers and I can WFH) and we are still recruiting and expanding. It is a bit bizarre having the inbalance between the culture in work where there's excitement and interest in all the scientific developments (we're not in the front line like doctors and nurses so are removed from the reality) and the culture outside where obviously life has changed completely.

DH is in the financial sector, is also considered a key worker but can WFH and so the only financial impact on us so far is the savings on petrol, gym membership, childcare etc. Have relatives who work freelance in an industry that has completely shut down, so well aware how lucky we are.

Spagbol88 · 14/04/2020 21:53

I'm a teacher at a college so I'll be fine. My partner works for an Internet company which helps sell insurance so I think he will be ok too. I know we are very fortunate to have the security that we do. Our neighbours have both lost their jobs. Just crap

ItchyScratch · 14/04/2020 22:01

It’s very interesting to read how it will effect your lives. I really am sorry for those who’s worlds have been turned upside down. Flowers

I work in financial services at a fairly but not that senior level. We are not furloughing and our projected finances for the next few months are good so no immediate risk.

However, the dodgy bit is what happens in the back end of the year. In some ways this is a growth time for us (we have skills you only need sometimes so need to outsource) but also clients will be looking to reduce budgets.

If we do need redundancy I'm fairly close to top of the criteria list I reckon - don't want to progress up so am a bit of a blocker, decent salary so I'd be a good cost saving. I am quite well thought of but equally just a name in a spreadsheet so who knows.

I've worked out what my redundancy payment is likely to be and it's fine to keep us afloat for the best part of a year if we are careful but whilst I'm not bothered about leaving this job, trying to find another fairly niche well paid role in a recession does worry me.

SilkCottonTree · 14/04/2020 22:21

Sorry for everyone having such a tough time. DH should be ok, he is in the civil service in a fairly niche but necessary role. I'm ok for now - in a large university museum but who knows how this will all shake out. We are very fortunate that our 30 hours free childcare has just kicked in, so when nursery reopens we'll be saving money there.

stuckindoors77 · 14/04/2020 22:21

I teach, so not in immediate danger but I'm at the top of my salary scale where teachers are routinely managed out anyway. As the cuts from the recession bite I'm expecting to have a fight on my hands to keep my job.

GenderApostate19 · 14/04/2020 22:24

DH is secure, I hope - he’s an engineering manager in the food industry ( cheese/dairy) and they are full on busy. What is worrying though, is that he wants to retire in 6/7 years but if pensions tank along with the world economy, it won’t be possible.
This has changed our outlook from spending lots on holidays and weekends away to paying off the mortgage early.

hannabarbera · 14/04/2020 22:37

No. Finance in local government. My job is vital. Thankfully.

HerRoyalNotness · 14/04/2020 22:40

I did lose my job. I Had sorted out and settled toddler into preschool, older child into after school care, and paid for all of that, plus bought some work clothes and shoes and had a hair cut. I was employed for two weeks SadHmm

Mimishimi · 14/04/2020 22:48

I'm a hair and makeup artist. Everything cancelled. Philosophically opposed to going on the dole ( it's a stereotype of my community) so not too sure what to do. Upside is I have no expenses at the moment either though as my main household responsibility is for our car which we are not using. Mortgage has been paid off.

Babyroobs · 14/04/2020 22:56

The project I work for is funded by a large charity and it's a temporary contract anyway which was at risk of not being renewed at the end of the year. I guess whether I still have a job come December will depend on how hard the charity is hit with loss of fund raising revenue.

Plannergirl9 · 14/04/2020 23:03

I work for a local authority so I am currently working from home. Its OK in the short term however I have a serious medical condition so I'm in the vulnerable but not shielding group. What if I have to stay at home for months until we get a vaccine? I won't be able to do my job properly so how can I expect them to keep me on doing half a job.

DH is in a similar boat.

MT2017 · 15/04/2020 00:27

I am support staff in a state school so hopefully ok. DH in logistics and just had bonus and car so assuming he will be ok for the foreseeable future too.

Friend in pharma says they are busier than ever...

ilovesooty · 15/04/2020 01:16

Fully self employed for a year so not eligible for government aid. I do have another income thankfully. Work is reduced currently but hasn't died completely. I think I'm more fortunate than many and I'm sorry to hear many of the situations here.

SpiritEssence · 15/04/2020 05:43

No I'll be fine people always need to food

Aebj · 15/04/2020 05:57

I’m in Australia. I’ve just done my 5th season at an attraction park. It normally shuts after the April school holidays, so 2 weeks today. We’ve been shut for 3 weeks now and all of us on a casual contract have been laid off and I know of one permanent person has lost their job. I hope I can get back in . Hopefully end of September. Last year I had a few hours a week off season, so missing it this year big time. Not for the money but for my own sanity. The talking to people, sense of purpose.
I’m contracted in my other job, for 4 hours a fortnight but would normally get 10-15 hours a fortnight. This contract ends , end of June and I’m worried I’ll loose this job. Again it’s not the money I’ll miss , it’s the social content. We work with families that may require extra help.
Luckily dh is forces , so his job is safe.
Hope you all end up safe and well. @Namelesswonder sending you lots of love. I know it’s not a good parcel but hopefully you’ll except our good wishes

CtrlU · 15/04/2020 06:10

So far I’ve been off work with no pay since lockdown started and I have no idea when I’ll be back.

loopy42 · 15/04/2020 06:26

I work in the leisure industry currently furloughed. I will only have a job for as long as the government keep on paying the 80%.

DP works in construction and is also currently furloughed. His company are currently putting plans in place so they can return to work at the beginning of May so we will at least have his salary.

maneandfeathers · 15/04/2020 06:41

I work in veterinary and it’s been insanely busy with emergency work and new puppies Hmm but isn’t making the money it usually does. The job losses are effecting the treatment options people have financially and we aren’t doing as much investigation work.

A lot of the support staff are on furlough. If redundancies happen I think they would keep the vets and nurses and cut down on the rest Sad

I feel incredibly lucky to still be at work, however I’m also terrified of being so close to the public!

vickibee · 15/04/2020 07:05

I am WFH in a fashion. A pert time accounts assistant for a rural estate. Our manager has told us there is no need to worry about our jobs but who knows. Our company has a lot of resources and can manage financially for a few months.
Dh is a tradesman. Maintenance for a large city Council. Because it involves working in tenants homes he is furlough Weare hoping his job will still be there but he only started in January so is still on probation. Before that he was self employed for years

StealingYourWiFi · 15/04/2020 07:08

Private sector registered healthcare professional. We cancelled all elective work, we also sent a lot of ventilators to the NHS. We are currently doing their cancer wait cases but lots of patients are either a) unsuitable, b) symptomatic or self isolating or c) don't want it done. The only patients really turning up are mastectomy cases.

A couple have been redeployed, I will likely be next as I am airway trained and have an A+E history. My job is safe...my DPs should be too, his work is (without being outing) based on staying inside. He works from home anyway but his usual international travel is cancelled.

Impatientwino · 15/04/2020 07:19

I am self employed in the events industry so no work and goodness knows when things will pick up and if I can wait until they do. I am eligible for the help coming in June so that will be good.

DH has been told that his company has enough money in the bank to survive with no income until the new year - they have the odd piece of work coming in as well so that hopefully will be fine. He works in HR anyway so if the company does need to make redundancies he'll have to be there to deal with them all so that should buy us another few months if necessary.

EBM20 · 15/04/2020 07:20

I was in my notice period 2 weeks in working as a hotel receptionist, with a new job lined up in another hotel as a receptionist again. All in the same week I found out I was pregnant, the same day that the government put the label vulnerable on pregnant people to isolate for 12 weeks, my contact at the job I was leaving was terminated with imediate affect and the country went onto lockdown. My new job are still saying the job offer is still there but cannot say a start date which is understandable. They do not know I'm pregnant and I'm scared they will pull the job offer when I tell them. I'm scared to announce my pregnancy on social media incase they find out that way then pull the job offer. I'm just hoping we go back soon so I can at least work a few months full time before the baby comes in November. I am currently working at Tesco part time as a temp as I felt I had no choice, otherwise I would be dipping into the small savings I have which I planned on spending on the baby. Luckily I'm still living at my parents but we had just found our own place that now we cannot afford to move out as partner is self employed 0 hour and has been getting next to no work.
