Have/will you lose you job due to this virus?

I realise I sound like I’m the DM researching for a story here- I am not. I hate the Daily Mail.

But I wanted to know, for those that don’t mind saying- have you or might you lose your job due to Coronavirus? And if so why?

I am so far expecting my line of work should be ok (accounting) but if all my clients cease trading then maybe not.

My OH is also so far ok but it’s starting to look a bit worrying if this all gets worse/ goes on for longer. He is a hotel manager.

What are you going to do? I feel like I should put a plan in place- god knows what though Confused

And lastly- I hope you will be ok Flowers

In AOL honesty I don't know. Its public sector so im hoping they have moral obligation and pressure to at least furlough?

I would tempt fate to say at least two pay checks are safe..

Dh on the other hand is fairly new in his role. They have kept him on this month and but have made it clear they are not generating money and will have to make cuts.

If I can get next month + next month pay and dh one more, well be OK for a few few more months.

It's treading water and buying time isn't it until a vaccine is found...

I do think when this is over the economy will roar again like the 20s!!

TerrorWig · 14/04/2020 19:48

No. I am in the extraordinarily fortunate position that not only is my job very safe, but that actually the work I’ve done will probably bode well for next years bonus and pay raise - although the pot will likely be smaller.

Husband is not working but has applied (unsuccessfully) to the four supermarkets within walking distance.

DianaT1969 · 14/04/2020 19:50

Lost my work. I was freelancing in two sectors and they both had to stop because they involve large public gatherings and travel. All future contracts cancelled. I was a Rishi 5%er - not eligible for any help because I'd been self-employed for a year. PAYE all my life before that. Only went freelance because my old company were squeezed due to Brexit.
Universal credit will cover half of my outgoings during lockdown. I lived frugally anyway.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/04/2020 19:53

Not yet but we've had to close so I'm on furlough. It's precarious at the moment, the next 2 months will be a big deciding factor in whether I'll have a job or indeed if the company I work for will even survive.

ItchyScratch · 14/04/2020 19:55

I didn’t think there would be so many replies.
I think I naively thought the majority would be ok for now so it’s sad to read you’ve all had such an upheaval with all of this.
I hope you all come out the other end better than before!

Not yet, but I am worried for the future. Both me and my DH work in construction (different roles) so we'll be screwed if it all goes bump again.

Dk20 · 14/04/2020 20:05

I'm in finance so I'm ok, wfh and longer hours than usual.
Dp on the other hand cant work at the minute (until restrictions are loosened) which means the mortgage weve been saving so hard to get is now probably down the drain

MuchTooTired · 14/04/2020 20:10

I lost mine. It was only a 6m contract but I’m gutted. The next week after dh got cut down to 80%, hopefully he’ll have a job to go back to or we’re fucked!

Easilyanxious · 14/04/2020 20:17

Yes lost my job as had only started a few weeks before which was a shame as good pay and great hrs for me . Luckily dh job is pretty safe he's still working from home so we can pay the bills

Yellredder · 14/04/2020 20:22

I'm in FE, government changes in the type of course I work on have resulted in a lack of demand, so we were already anticipating redundancies this summer. I'll be there with my hands held high as I am really struggling with how unethically I'm expected to work. Just had enough now and this virus will further reduce demand, I'm sure.

Mascotte · 14/04/2020 20:24

Job technically still there but no work. No income. No government help. I’m a single parent.

pinkazing · 14/04/2020 20:25

I’m furloughed at the mo. but I’m 95% sure I won’t be going back as 40% of the staff are furloughed and my job was a development role and more of a luxury. Just hoping to be furloughed as long as possible and hope to find something else when things head back to some sort of normality,

Gingernaut · 14/04/2020 20:27

I have a niche (not patient facing role) in the NHS.

I have a particular set of skills and specialist training that could be transferred to other areas.

Not going to lose my job, but very aware that I am extremely lucky.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 14/04/2020 20:29

My part time job is safe and actually gone full time for the foreseeable future, my small business will.picm up again eventually

Edujaded · 14/04/2020 20:31

No one knows how the economic world is going to look after this. I think it's wise to plan for the worst scenario and hope for the best. By which I mean sit down with a calculator and pen and see how you could hold on to any assets you have if the industries you work for fold. I think the base need of a roof over your head is the sole priority. Likely I think that several generations may have to all live together as people lose their homes through repossessions or evictions. it will be a time of great adaption.

thebeatofthedrum · 14/04/2020 20:35

I've been furloughed. I expect to have a job to go back to but it may be part time and/or slightly different to the one I have now. I love the company I work for so I'm prepared to be flexible as they've shown us a lot of consideration.

thismeansnothing · 14/04/2020 20:36

I was supposed to go back to work after my mat leave on 1st April. I have worked in healthcare for 12 years and In the space of the 3 weeks leading up to my return date I was told I was being made redundant from my origional post. I was then Offered suitable alternative employment. Then told a few days before my return I was being made redundant from that as the project funding was pulled.

Now struggling to find a job as DH working from home. And with the schools and nursery closed I have no childcare so am really limited in what I can apply for. Been round all the local supermarkets and they aren't taking on. Even applied for night shifts at amazon warehouse and application is all online, days of filling in a page then the next process being available now it's saying I have the next form to fill but nothings there and it logs me out. Everythings all so complicated. Scouted around local takeaways for delivery work and nothing there. It's all really really crap.

Magic2020 · 14/04/2020 20:36

@Namelesswonder I'm in exactly the same position - DH found out he was losing his job last week, we'll have a large mortgage and only my salary to pay it (takes up about four fifths of it if I'm paying it on my own). Will probably have to take on extra shifts to feed us, although I understand that we're lucky, at least we'll be able to keep body and soul together.

Not feeling terribly lucky at the mo though.

Magic2020 · 14/04/2020 20:40

My brother-in-law, sister-in-law and brother have also lost job offers and jobs too. My Mum is freelance and has to isolate so has lost her income. This has so far affected everyone massively, and it's only been 3 weeks so far.

ilovecakeandwine · 14/04/2020 20:41

I'm worried I work in the drinks industry. I'm currently furloughed but I can't go back till dc goes back to school so I'm hopeful the government will continue paying 80% until dc can go back to school even if it's part time . I may be on reduced hours anyway for a while . I'm hopeful dh job is ok for now but they are making cuts .
I'm in a fairly good position financially as have some savings . I hope things will pick up September/ October .

absolutelyknackeredcow · 14/04/2020 20:44

Both still got jobs but have taken sizeable pay cuts. My DH looks the most dodgy as he's a lawyer in tourism.
Ironically both of us are absolutely rushed off our feet - COVID has created massive amounts of work if not income for our businesses.
Paying our mortgage is very tight on my reduced salary but we are trying to be v frugal while we are both still earning to give us a cushion.
Aware we are lucky compared to others

Fallenmadonnawiththebigboobies · 14/04/2020 21:15

Work in travel and am furloughed. suspect if furlough not extended by government I will lose my job.

gabsdot45 · 14/04/2020 21:19

I work in HR in factory that makes prepacked sandwiches.
Our output has dropped by 2/3rds and everyone's hours have been cut dramatically.
Layoffs are next.
I'm responsible for payroll so if the company closes I'll be one of the last to go.
I love my job, I'd be devastated to loose it.

Dontjumptoconclusions · 14/04/2020 21:26

I work in life science sales selling lab equipment. our revenue has quadrupled in the last month, no furlough here.

Schoolchoicesucks · 14/04/2020 21:31

DH has had to take a 20% pay cut but still working (not furloughed) for now. Half of his company have been furloughed. Depends how long this goes on for and what the economy is like whether there is a job for the furloughed staff to return to.

My company has furloughed a third of staff. My role is secure for now, but the sector may have suffered a huge blow and so long term may struggle.
