Boris 'it could have gone either way'

Well he's recorded a very passionate speech and looks very poorly indeed.
He shows a huge amount of gratitude towards the staff who have cared for him and he appeared quite shaken. Lips quivering towards the end I thought.
I really hope this is a turning point and our government will invest properly into an NHS that has been in its knees for a long time.
Maybe he will vote in favour of NHS staff pay increases next time.

First time I’ve ever heard him talk with conviction about anything.

I’d like to think this will be something of an epiphany for him. He’s obviously been very unwell.

Also, why did he feel he had to put on a suit?!

Makinganewthinghappen · 12/04/2020 16:50

Actually the first speech I’ve seen him make that feels “real”. I know when I have been very ill in hospital I’ve found it really hard to talk about. I actually think that must have been a very hard recording for him to make.

I hope so.

This is what I've been hoping too, OP.

Otherrooms · 12/04/2020 16:55

Just after saying 'it is powered by love' he said 'thank you' and he was visibly shaken - lips quivered..
Forward to 2.00 mins

I'm sure his experience will change the whole course of his premiership, if not his life. I hope more investment in NHS England will follow, but I will believe it when I see it.

I agree!

Thething
I hope so. I think he's had a massive shock.

The first time that I have believed that he meant what he said.

It makes one think of the saying about walking in someone’s shoes.
Hopefully, Boris will change for the better

I’m glad he’s on the mend. I really really hope that this experience has scared the shite out of him in such a way that he actually uses the power he’s fought for, to properly fund the NHS. Although I’m also sure that the privilege of his position will have meant that he got absolutely astounding service and care anyway.

Otherrooms · 12/04/2020 17:00

It makes one think of the saying about walking in someone’s shoes.

Has he ever been really ill before?
If not, It may, as another person said upthread, be some sort of epiphany for him.

Yes to all of that winnie

Nah, nothing will change. Privatisation by stealth will continue.

RuffleCrow · 12/04/2020 17:03

I completely get it. Nothing can compare to the gratitude you feel for NHS staff when they've just saved your life - or that of someone you care about. Let's hope that feeling lasts.

CatherineCawood · 12/04/2020 17:03

Let us hope it will stop him selling it off then and start funding it properly. I hope he mans up, tells everyone he was wrong and that he is changing policy. If anything would make you have a bloody good think it would be going through this.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 12/04/2020 17:04

How soon can I sit him down and ask him:
A) why does he think neither of the nurses he spoke about in depth were U.K. nationals?
B) Did he ask them about their living conditions in central London and does he consider them adequate or appropriate?
C) Did he ask if they have ever used a food bank?
D) What is he going to do about it

CoolCarrie · 12/04/2020 17:05

I’ve said in other threads that I hope his situation humbles him, and his awful father, maybe it has, but we can’t let him and his crew off the hook because he was ill. They still made huge mistakes which other people are paying for, and will continue to do so as long as ppe isn’t available.

BiggerBoat1 · 12/04/2020 17:06

Let's hope this experience changes him for the better. He must feel thoroughly ashamed when he thinks back to the braying buffoon who cheered the blocking of pay rises for NHS workers.

Let's hope he can stop talking in soundbites now and actually govern with a conscience.

Winnietheshit · 12/04/2020 17:06

Whomever nurses him will have been especially picked for the job by hospital management so I’m assuming they wanted to make the point about non U.K. nationals propping up the NHS to the architect of Brexit.

Echobelly · 12/04/2020 17:10

It's a good speech and I believe sincere.

The sad thing is, though, that most people will presumably not get two nurses to stand by their bedside for 48 hours - for ordinary people they will be rushing around between multiple patients who will die despite their best efforts, and they are making that effort every day fro everyone they can. But there's just not the equipment, manpower, support and historical investment there needs to be for a crisis like this, or even normal management.

Dogsaresomucheasier that is a disgusting thing to say.

I despise everything about BoJo, but am appalled at that comment.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 12/04/2020 17:15

Yes it is, just as well I’m not working as a nurse really.
