Boris 'it could have gone either way'

Well he's recorded a very passionate speech and looks very poorly indeed.
He shows a huge amount of gratitude towards the staff who have cared for him and he appeared quite shaken. Lips quivering towards the end I thought.
I really hope this is a turning point and our government will invest properly into an NHS that has been in its knees for a long time.
Maybe he will vote in favour of NHS staff pay increases next time.

It sounded sincere. I’d love to think this will change things but I think even when people have huge scares and big experiences that change them, it isn’t always permanent and people will gradually go back to how they were.

Otherrooms · 12/04/2020 17:48

Regtettably it doesn't matter how much money it is given if the model doesn't work.

Very true sadly.

That speech made me cry - not particularly because of Boris but because it brought back my own memories of being incredibly unwell in an NHS hospital. I think I suffered from a form of PTSD in the months and years immediately afterwards, and the thought of being hospitalised again with this virus, not being able to breathe has brought a lot of feelings back to the surface. Boris' brought back an overwhelming and complicated set of emotions for the men and women who saved my life.
I can't imagine that Boris will not have been changed by his experiences this last week.

Otherrooms · 12/04/2020 17:49

He may start listening to the real experts more. Look who he has leant in throughout in his press conferences! Not his f'king cabinet that's for sure.

I don't think either of those nurses did a 48 hour shift. He'd have had 1:1 nursing from each of them, taking turns on a 12.5 hour shift.

Otherrooms · 12/04/2020 17:51

Lent? Leant? !!

OP posts:
coconuttelegraph · 12/04/2020 17:51

I didn't think he meant the 2 nurses were there at the same time did he? I've seen on here that 1 nurse per patient is the norm in ITU, would they not have worked in shifts?

hamstersarse · 12/04/2020 17:52

I don’t think Boris has ever been insincere, more he’s always been a bit happy go lucky because his life has been fairly straightforward.

Naive and narrow minded. 'I'm alright Jack' syndrome.

@Otherrooms

I don't want to repeat it. You can google the vile woman.

clippityclop · 12/04/2020 17:57

I hope he shows his appreciation by increasing funding to every aspect of the NHS and all the agencies which support community social welfare which have been brought to their knees by funding cuts in the last ten years or more. I'm glad he is well and don't doubt his sincerity but I suspect if he had any other illness he would have gone straight to a private hospital and paid for the finest treatment without a thought.

JellyfishandShells · 12/04/2020 17:58

I'm guessing this is the first time he or any of his family have been treated in an NHS hospital in his life

Don’t be daft - there isn’t such a thing as private A & E for one thing and he and his family would have to be extraordinarily lucky not to have had at least minor accidents.

I was surprised to see him in a suit and to have spoken for so long. Hope he does take proper rest and recuperation, but would not like to be the one trying to stop him getting back to work.

hamstersarse · 12/04/2020 18:00

He’s not the resting type, he will probably be forced to though.

We all know someone like this, won’t look out for their own health and put their duty first.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 12/04/2020 18:00

I’m sure there shall be an increase in funding I think that’s more of a political move

Labour night keep the NHS afloat a little longer (if they were elected) but as it’s been said the model isn’t working and hasn’t for a long time it needs huge changes and these will not be popular with voters it needs to be more efficient

hamstersarse · 12/04/2020 18:01

Naive and narrow minded. 'I'm alright Jack' syndrome.

We are all a bit like that aren’t we?!!!
I try not to be but I know I am.

hamstersarse · 12/04/2020 18:04

We can’t just give the NHS unlimited funding forever.

IMO we need to change where we put responsibility for health - the interplay between individual responsibility and NHS responsibility it so skewed. It can’t just be for the NHS to have to treat every condition when the individual concerned take no responsibility for their health. That just means an unsustainable black hole of funding

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 12/04/2020 18:16

FFS if you want a government who really cares about the NHS don't vote fucking Tory. It's quite simple 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️.

VettiyaIruken · 12/04/2020 18:19

It would be nice to think it will change him but I doubt it will. 6 months after this is under control it will be business as usual.

Hoggleludo · 12/04/2020 18:22

I think it will

I think from now on 95% of people will be more appreciative. I really do.

Ghostlyglow · 12/04/2020 18:26

I think he's sincere now. I don't think it will change him, in the long term, though. This time next year, he will be the same as he has always been, if he has recovered.

ALongHardWinter · 12/04/2020 18:28

Well I'm glad that he's recovered, but I'm certainly not holding my breath about him investing properly in the NHS.

PigletJohn · 12/04/2020 18:28

@hamstersarse

perhaps the way to get good services is to starve them of money and resource. That's been tried for the last ten years. Has it worked?

It certainly got the Tories cheering.

bettybattenburg · 12/04/2020 18:34

I wonder how long it will last.

As long as it lasted with David Cameron.

I agree with them having two nurses, not from Johnson's point of view but for the benefit of the nurses who are having an extremely stressful time at the moment and having to have the responsibility for caring for the PM would have been doubly so.

Otherrooms · 12/04/2020 18:35

hamster
We are. Some more so than others though.

TheFormidableMrsC · 12/04/2020 18:37

I hope that the hideous experience he has had will ensure that the NHS is properly funded and the staff properly paid going forward. I also hope that all the "low paid unskilled" who he and his cronies have spoken about with such contempt, but who have kept this country running over the past few weeks, are recognised for the hugely important role they do. If this doesn't bring about a huge change in the social inequality this country is steeped in, then I don't know what will.
