Do you 'dress' your bed?

ouch321 · 12/04/2020 12:16

So looking at new duvet covers online which made me ponder...

My bed is just mattress, mattress cover, fitted white sheet, duvet with cover and 2 x pillows with covers (double bed).

Is yours the same?

In the pictures I quite often see 2 or 3 sets of pillows eg one with the standard pillow case and also one with the edging around it (Oxford?), sometimes a plain white pair as well and a bedspread and/or cushions on the bed.

Now part of me thinks that it's just marketing to sell more of the product range and part of me thinks hmm, that looks quite nice and maybe that's how everyone else does it..

We have a throw on the bottom and two matching cushions. They inevitably end up on the floor each night 😊

feelinguseless78 · 12/04/2020 12:22

Currently it's mattress, protector, fitted sheet, flat sheet, duvet and pillows. But the room in unplastered, unfurnished and generally a building site.

When decorated, it's mattress, protector, fitted sheet, flat sheet duvet, 4 pillows, blanket/throw/eider, cushions, bolster. Etc.

So yes, usually it's dressed.

PontiacBandit · 12/04/2020 12:25

Since doing up our bedroom I've added a top sheet and extra pillows for sitting up in bed. I got rid of the throw as it was too hot.

No, I hate dressed beds, I think they look fussy and twee. First thing we do at holiday cottages and hotels is stash all the runners and cushions in the wardrobe.

MarieQueenofScots · 12/04/2020 12:27

I have a bedspread during winter to act as a functional extra cover.

DD has fluffy pillows etc but uses them all to squish into Grin

Raffathebear · 12/04/2020 12:27

Why do you have fitted sheet then flat sheet? Shock

I like a simple look, so its mattress, protector, sheet, duvet, 4 pillows. All in white cotton. Cant stand extra unnecessay stuff.

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/04/2020 12:28

I can't stand cushions on beds. Argh, they're so annoying. I do however have 4 pillows. All feather/down ones but the "front" two are softer and have silk pillowcases and the "back" two are firmer and have cotton pillowcases. So covers all preferences Smile

devildeepbluesea · 12/04/2020 12:28

Not keen on anything except duvet and pillows, in appropriate cases.

Just looks prissy and it all ends up on the floor anyway.

Canadianpancake · 12/04/2020 12:28

At the moment my bed is mostly dressed by me lounging on it in my stretchy trousers, baggy top and no bra. Enhanced with a book, a brew and a packet of chocolate hobnobs that I keep hidden in my knicker draw.

The extra pillows and cushions that I have on it make this more comfortable, as does the Sherpa blanket that keeps my feet warm. My bed is definitely the space I like to retreat to, and having it 'dressed' makes it look more inviting and cosy. But nothing really matches, it's not designer dressed.

It's just personal preference I guess.

TheSmallAssassin · 12/04/2020 12:29

I don't understand the point. Why put stuff on just to throw it off at night? It's not like you're in your bedroom much to look at it. It's just clutter. Brrrr.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 12/04/2020 12:29

We're a family of blanket lovers so everyone's bed has a snuggly throw across the bottom. I don't think I'd deliberately 'dress' the bed but we have fitted sheet, flat sheet, duvet, throw across the bottom, 2 rectangular pillows with a square pillow underneath for reading - the large square pillows end up on the floor each night but they're necessary for comfort.

VettiyaIruken · 12/04/2020 12:30

No. It seems unnecessary work for a room you only go in to sleep.

Bakedpotatoandgin · 12/04/2020 12:30

I have plain white bedding, the basic sheet, duvet cover, pillow case, and a big knitted blanket in pretty colours that covers it all when I can be bothered to lay it out properly

Rigorousyetcalm · 12/04/2020 12:31

Mattresses absorb lots of sweat from our bodies each night. I hate when my DH makes our bed as soon as we get out of it in the morning. I leave the duvet pushed back for most of the day to air it. I went through a phase of having ridiculous cushions on the bed but have nowhere to set them at nighttime. Beds look lovely dressed up in shops etc but on a practical basis, who can be bothered removing all that stuff every night?

Bezalelle · 12/04/2020 12:32

We just have duvet, pillows, and throw - plus a completely useless random cushion that I prop up against the pillows when I make the bed. No idea why!

Sarahlou63 · 12/04/2020 12:34

My side of the bed is 'dressed' with a small stepladder and a couple of broom handles (all laid flat) to prevent the dog encroaching. The dog's side is 'dressed' with a dog bed over a large towel with an uninflated lilo underneath. She's got a condition which causes her to leak urine during a deep sleep. An implant has pretty much cured it but there's still the odd accident.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/04/2020 12:35

I don't see the point in adding aesthetic clutter that has to be dumped on the floor at bed time.

It's bad enough dealing with practical clutter like unfinished laundry sorting Grin

TwoZeroTwoZero · 12/04/2020 12:35

Ours is like yours op. Possibly if we had a nicer bedroom that wasn't full of crap and clutter I might be more inclined to pretty it up but I'd probably get fed up of doing it every day only to undo it every night and wouldn't bother after a few weeks.

Dazedandconfusedpart2 · 12/04/2020 12:35

I'm bed bound some days so have lots of extra pillows, cushions, throws etc. It really does make it more comfortable and bearable when I need to spend days on end there.

I worked really hard to get the house looking nice so I do like a nicely made bed when I can manage but it's 100% something I do for me!

OhTheRoses · 12/04/2020 12:37

Yes.

paininthepoinsettia · 12/04/2020 12:37

I read that it is really important to air your bed, so duvet turned back to expose as much mattress as possible. The trend for dressing beds increases the temperature and is a breeding ground for dust mites and fungi.

lazylinguist · 12/04/2020 12:38

I have a plain white duvet cover and a bedspread/throw over it, but that stays on and doesn't get chucked on the floor. No extra cushions - I agree they look fussy and are pointless.

mbosnz · 12/04/2020 12:38

My bed is dressed. There are three sets of pillows, one Euro Square with quilted covers, then two standard pillows. Then there's two standard contrasting cushions, and a small detailed cushion.

Then there's a quilt to match the cushions on the bottom.

DH is very patient with me, and laughs at me a great deal.

Thingywhatsit · 12/04/2020 12:38

Am I the only one thinking that I’m lucky if I make my bed in the morning never mind getting it bloody “dressed”??????

Megan2018 · 12/04/2020 12:40

With cats....Grin

I have Superking beds, 4 kingsize pillows (2 plain, 2 Oxford) then a throw folded on bottom of bed. I used to have cushions but they got on my nerves.
