Do you 'dress' your bed?

So looking at new duvet covers online which made me ponder...

My bed is just mattress, mattress cover, fitted white sheet, duvet with cover and 2 x pillows with covers (double bed).

Is yours the same?

In the pictures I quite often see 2 or 3 sets of pillows eg one with the standard pillow case and also one with the edging around it (Oxford?), sometimes a plain white pair as well and a bedspread and/or cushions on the bed.

Now part of me thinks that it's just marketing to sell more of the product range and part of me thinks hmm, that looks quite nice and maybe that's how everyone else does it..

Just made every morning with my teddy plopped between the pillows.

Am single.

Read into that what you will.

I never used to dress my bed, it was always functional. Then I heard a friend say that as her bedroom is her sanctuary from the chaos of family life, she loves having a tidy and pretty bed and she especially likes taking 5 mins each morning to go through a routine of dressing the bed - the calm before the school-run / getting to work storm.

So I gave it a go too. I have to say there's something ever so calming and soothing (to me) about smoothing out the linen, plumping the pillows and then arranging a few cushions "just so". It also gives me a little lift whenever I go in to my bedroom or past it during the day and spot the nicely made bed.

It's a nice, easy, effective calming technique for me - living with an anxiety condition I often look for simple but effective things to keep in my mental health tool box.

We have a superking size bed, we have 7 pillows and three decorative cushions as well as a thin quilt over the end. I also find it a positive for my mental health to have a beautifully inviting bed.

All those spare cushions are just dust magnets. I take them straight off the bed when I stay in hotels or self-catering. If there's space I shove them in a cupboard. Once stayed in an Airbnb which had 18 cushions (and two pillows) on the bed. It was ridiculous.

We have a pillow each, and an extra cushion to prop behind it for reading. These go on the floor at night.

I also air the bed all day. Get up, fold back duvet and open windows. I come up to close the blinds and windows around dusk and make the bed then.

I find it a calm and restful space. The clutter from extra cushions just annoys me!

morecoffeerequired · 12/04/2020 12:53

Nope. Can't be arsed. The bed counts itself lucky if it gets made before we get back in it again Grin

MrsCastiel · 12/04/2020 12:59

@ZarkingBell how funny, I'm the opposite. At my yoingest's bedtime (7pm) I go into my room and close the window and curtains, put the 2 dress cushions on the ottoman and pull the duvet back ready for my going to bed around 11.

Funny how we all do things differently isn't it! (that may sound sarcastic but it really isn't meant to be 😉)

Slychomping99 · 12/04/2020 13:07

Nope. Plain duvet that gets pulled back to air every day with the window open, whatever the weather. Can't stand pointless cushions. Do have square pillows for reading though.

luckylavender · 12/04/2020 13:08

God no, I've never understood why people do it. Each to his own though.

DazzlingDee · 12/04/2020 13:09

I fell in to the trap - throws, extra pillows etc and they were a pain in the arse. Taking them off every night, re ‘dressing’ the bed in the morning. What a faff! Got rid of them

SpillTheTeaa · 12/04/2020 13:10

Yes I do. I have a throw at the bottoms and cushions. Makes it looks pretty Grin

mencken · 12/04/2020 13:12

no. Pointless wifework for stuff that just ends up chucked on the floor and never gets washed.

OllyBJolly · 12/04/2020 13:14

Ever since I was introduced to the guilty pleasure that is "4 in a bed" the thought of cushions and throws on beds gives me the heaves. They are never washed!

Now we're empty nesters two of our beds are permanently dressed but all bedding, including decorative, is washed before anyone comes to stay.

AgeLikeWine · 12/04/2020 13:15

Extra throws cushions, fancy pillows etc are a complete waste of time and money. They all end up on the floor anyway, so what’s the point?

Clever marketing has persuaded people to buy this stuff, it’s jus5 another example of consumerism gone mad.

ExpletiveDelighted · 12/04/2020 13:16

The airing point is true too, I turn the duvet back and leave it all day, the though of only airing it for say half an hour before work then making it is a bit ewww.

Doobedoobedoobe · 12/04/2020 13:19

Would be pointless for us because we don’t make the bed every day. The duvet/sheet is folded down to the bottom and the pillows propped up on the headboard to let the mattress air. You loose a pint of sweat every night and I don’t want that trapped under the duvet!

Doobedoobedoobe · 12/04/2020 13:20

Lose not loose!

Youmeandborisbee · 12/04/2020 13:20

We have 6 cushions and a throw as well as the usual. It makes it look nice. Plain is boring

Izzabellasasperella · 12/04/2020 14:17

This is my bed, as you can see I am of the more is more school of thought😊 Black cat added for extra decoration.

Do you 'dress' your bed?
Concestor · 12/04/2020 15:36

Just a duvet and pillows here. I don't see the point of a load of clutter I have to shove on the floor to get into bed! My bedroom is really minimalist and tidy so I'd hate that. I hate it when I go away and the bed is covered in crap I have to find somewhere for.

forgetthehousework · 12/04/2020 15:44

We do have extra pillows for sitting up in bed reading, but even those are a pain to find a place for at night.

feelinguseless78 · 12/04/2020 18:49

@Raffathebear my bottom sheet is fitted and the flat sheet is a top sheet.

I love a top sheet, helps me regulate my temperature better and means the duvet cover doesn't need washing as frequently.

dementedma · 12/04/2020 18:55

This is a thing? Why do people have fitted sheets and then a flat sheet?
I would like my bedroom to be a sanctuary but it houses the ironing pile, the laundry basket and all the other crap that won’t fit anywhere.
It does have glow in the dark planets hanging from the ceiling though

msmith501 · 12/04/2020 18:56

Don't see the point of a throw or cushions. The hotel inspector agrees - between getting up and going to bed they sit there doing nothing and then you throw them to one side when you actually use the bed. The one thing I do differently is fit a plain pillow case under the one the matches the duvet as it helps to keep the pillows that little bit fresher.

DJMumzy · 12/04/2020 18:58

No dressing but I have 4 pillows (2x each for me and DH) and good quality colourful marimekko bedding sets (unikko of different colours) that get changed often. I plump the pillows in the morning. Like others o find it soothing.

safariboot · 12/04/2020 19:01

Just the basics for me. Anything else would be clutter, and I have enough of that.
