Do you 'dress' your bed?

So looking at new duvet covers online which made me ponder...

My bed is just mattress, mattress cover, fitted white sheet, duvet with cover and 2 x pillows with covers (double bed).

Is yours the same?

In the pictures I quite often see 2 or 3 sets of pillows eg one with the standard pillow case and also one with the edging around it (Oxford?), sometimes a plain white pair as well and a bedspread and/or cushions on the bed.

Now part of me thinks that it's just marketing to sell more of the product range and part of me thinks hmm, that looks quite nice and maybe that's how everyone else does it..

I'm another one who doesn't get the point of extra stuff on the bed that you have to take off before getting in. Surely just dust magnets and a trip hazard if going to the loo in the middle of the night!

Pepperwand · 12/04/2020 19:05

Admittedly I may be swayed by the fact my sister tripped on the bed throw she put on the floor when getting up one morning and fell face first onto the corner of her dressing table leaving her with a permanent scar. Shock

Chipsahoy · 12/04/2020 19:08

I adore my bed dressed. One thing I hate about warmer weather is having to swap the massive cuddly duvet for a thinner one.

I fold the duvet down nicely and have a fitted sheet underneath folded nicely. Extra pillows and cushions and then a throw on the bottom plus a nice cuddly fleece. All artfully arranged.
The light reason.. I love my home to look nice, twee or not, I love how inviting the bed looks every night. I also have fairy lights around the bed.
The heavier reason.. Cos I was horrifically abused in a filthy bed regularly for years. So I like my bed to look and feel wonderful.

@chipsahoy 💐for you.

Love a plain simple pristine bed. Have a superking with the usual fitted sheet , duvet cover , 4 pillows ... plus a top sheet over the duvet ... plus a fleece throw ... and 2 Labradors . 🤷🏻‍♀️

Strawberrycreamsundae · 12/04/2020 19:32

Unless you’re spending a lot of time sitting and admiring it I cannot see the point.
It’s a complete faff chucking everything off at night then having to tastefully rearrange it all again in the morning.
I do make my bed but leave the duvet folded back. That’s it, quick and simple.

fussychica · 12/04/2020 19:40

All white bedding plus dark grey pleated silk runner and matching pleated cushions, 2 square and 1 oblong. Takes seconds to put on/remove, been doing it for years.

Zaphodsotherhead · 12/04/2020 20:33

I have a dust mite allergy so my bed is stripped back every day, so dressing it would be pointless. When I pull it over, about an hour before I get into it, it's sheet, duvet and pillows, plus a triangular memory foam pillow if I'm writing in bed, plus an extra duvet and a crochet blanket because I sleep with the window open (see dust mite allergy) and it can get bloody cold!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/04/2020 20:40

No, and I find the cushions and throws you find in many hotel rooms bloody irritating. You just have to chuck them off and find somewhere to put them where you won’t trip over them when going to the loo at 3 am.

MistyIsland · 12/04/2020 20:48

I used to, loved having loads of pillows/cushions and matching throws. I even had bedroom chair to stack it all on at night. All beds were made to a show home standard.

Now a days your lucky if I even make it, before I climb back into it.

We have a superking bed, 2 x pillows each (one a king sized one normal) and still have our winter (13.5 tog) duvet which will be swapped later on this week for the thinner one

wickedfairy · 13/04/2020 09:20

I do it - every day! I have a throw across the bottom and two Oxford pillows that go in front of the pillows I sleep on, and two decorative cushions in front of that.

I love my bedroom and it gives me great pleasure to go into it and see it all 'nice'.

The rest of the room is decorated nicely too, with nice 'stuff'. I have three kids and a busy life and it's just one if the things that make me happy. It's my space.

Take the extra pillows/cushions off at night and remake in the morning, after the bed has been suitably aired. Doesn't take me long.

Jeleste · 13/04/2020 09:27

Mines like yours.
We have our bedroom decorated. It has a feature painted wall and a huge painting on the other wall. A sideboard with drawers with flowers on top. Little furniture, no clutter, but a few nice decorations. I matched the bedsheet color with the bedroom theme, but i cant be bothered with more pillows than necessary.

Meruem · 13/04/2020 10:38

Why do people have fitted sheets and then a flat sheet

I don't like being uncovered at night so if it's hot I can push the blankets down and just have the sheet over me. I like the weight of the blankets on my feet. I was getting terrible night sweats from peri menopause and I switched to sheets and blankets, rather than a duvet, and I don't get them now. Went to stay with Dsis a few weeks before lock down, slept under a quilt and I was sweating buckets every night again.

Raffathebear · 13/04/2020 20:41

Ahhh thanks good idea i might copy

hen10 · 13/04/2020 20:49

We just have duvet, pillows, and throw - plus a completely useless random cushion that I prop up against the pillows when I make the bed. No idea why!

YY, I have this, I call it the aesthetic cushion and no-one's allowed to put their head on it because I don't think it will wash very well. It matches the curtains and was a giddy, frivolous purchase. It gets thrown on the floor each night and I suspect the cat sleeps on it for a few hours as it's not looking as fresh as it used to.

DappledThings · 13/04/2020 21:12

No, I hate dressed beds, I think they look fussy and twee. First thing we do at holiday cottages and hotels is stash all the runners and cushions in the wardrobe.

Same. I also hate having a top sheet. My mum makes up the spare bed with one and I've never woken up with the sheet still on me. It's always twisted into a lump halfway round my ankles.

But I do only own duvet covers with nice patterns on. I hate white bedding. Also white walls, plates and clothes.

camelfinger · 13/04/2020 21:21

Yeah, I get annoyed when I go to holiday cottages where the crisp fresh bed linen is ruined by the dirty cushions and bedspreads that probably spend most nights on the floor.

Flixsfoilball · 13/04/2020 21:49

God no, why do you want to put crap on the bed only to need to remove it again before you go to bed?? Seems like a massive waste of time, and no-one apart from me and DP see it anyway

Pennywort · 13/04/2020 21:59

No, it looks hideously twee, like Hyacinth Buckett and Kelly Hoppen had some kind of simultaneous orgasm in Soft Furnishings.

And as a former chambermaid, can I point out that the throws and ornamental pillows on even high-end hotel beds are VERY seldom cleaned unless they have obvious puke or bodily fluids on them, so I would urge you to follow my example and bundle them away as soon as you’re in the room. Lying on them is the equivalent of licking door handles.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 13/04/2020 22:19

No, I’m not a fan. Everything is functional and washed regularly.

I have pillowcases & protectors, fitted sheet, duvet cover & flat sheet which are washed weekly. Also have a mattress protector which is washed probably once a month, more often if needed. The duvet is folded back to air the bed in the mornings.

NinetySixer · 13/04/2020 22:40

We have two beds (ours and a spare). We have white linen for each bed. Two sets of pillows (one oxford and the other set house wife). Our house is freezing in winter so we have a range of throws and blankets that are rotated and washed regularly and two cushions for bed reading or coffee in the morning.

The duvets are turned down every morning for an hour or so then the bed is made. I feel much more ‘together’ is the bed is made.

I grew up in a house where all the beds had duvet sets, cushions and throws to match the room decor. I hate throws and cushions in hotels as you don’t know how often they are cleaned.

The worse are travelodges with their thin satin ‘throws’ that are neither pretty nor function.

I love the idea of a lovely bedspread, pillow shams and cushions but I'm afraid it only lasts two days before I can't be arsed any more.
And you mess it all up if you want to go for an afternoon nap.

Zaphodsotherhead · 15/04/2020 09:47

If I had my bed all covered in decorative 'stuff' I'd have to keep the door closed even more rigidly than I do because the terrier would be up there 'nesting' whenever my back is turned and every neighbourhood cat would be in, sitting in the sunshine (I leave my bedroom window open 24/7, dust allergy).

It's stripped to its bones all day, and nobody has to walk past and see it, so I don't think it matters. I LOVE seeing those beautifully dressed beds and rooms in magazines though.

RishiSunakFanClub · 15/04/2020 10:36

No chance. I don't like duvets, so just 2 flat sheets, a couple of blankets and a bedcover, if it gets made at all

Astrabees · 15/04/2020 10:54

No, I hate all that faff and in hotels always assume the cushions have been under someone's bottom to enhance sex.
I like good quality bed linen and we have matching plain duvet cover (linen) and 2 pillows with the same pillowcases, underneath "housewife" and upper one "oxford". I do have a throw over the bottom of the bed as it keeps the duvet in place during the night.
