Friday and Monday or Monday and Tueday?

Every year dm asks me this question about Easter bank holiday weekend and what days my work place closes.

The office - obviously I mean this symbolically at the moment - has always closed Good Friday and Easter Monday and as I've worked there for 10 years I don't really understand why she thinks this will change.
But I've never worked or heard of any office or business that closes on bank holidays stay open on Good Friday and close Easter Monday and the day after. When I mention this to her she always says "well some places do"

Has anyone come across this or did my dm once work somewhere in the 60s that was the only place that did this (highly likely)? [ confused]

(disclaimer: I know lots of people work bank holidays)

And I spelt Tuesday wrong in the title!

Nope, never heard of it. Mind you the holidays are sometimes different in Scotland. Is she Scottish?

zemblanity · 09/04/2020 12:37

No she's not Scottish and none of our relatives are on her side to my knowledge.

In Scotland we just get Good Friday as a bank holiday, not Easter Monday.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 09/04/2020 12:39

Jaguar Land Rover stay open good Friday and close on the Tuesday after Easter Monday. BiL works there, happens every year.

MrsG010814 · 09/04/2020 12:42

A place I worked at until I left last year were open good Friday and closed easter Monday and the Tuesday.

zemblanity · 09/04/2020 12:42

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet so there are places that do it that way then. I owe my dm an apology.Grin

Yep! It’s the only place I’ve ever heard of though. There might be someone else along in a while to tell us of some others!

GreyishDays · 09/04/2020 12:45

Hospital I worked in did Friday Monday Tuesday I think.

SarahInAccounts · 09/04/2020 12:48

DH's work closed Monday and Tuesdays for years.

blueskys72 · 09/04/2020 12:49

I had the choice in one workplace years ago to take either the Friday or the Tuesday.

limesoda · 09/04/2020 12:51

Northern Ireland tends to be the Monday Tuesday.

MrsT1405 · 09/04/2020 12:52

I come from west Yorkshire and rhus was common years ago. Something to do with closing mills down for 2 consecutive days rather than one day either side of the weekend.

Parkrunner25 · 09/04/2020 12:52

Monday and Tuesday is reasonably common in manufacturing, I've never heard of it outside of that world though.

BruceAndNosh · 09/04/2020 12:53

Didn't Northern Ireland use to do the Monday and tuesday but not friday? Have I imagined that?

zemblanity · 09/04/2020 12:58

Thanks all, clearly she has a point then (not asking me about the same work place for a decade though)

It certainly used to be the Monday and Tuesday in Nottingham (maybe still is?). Apparently a left-over arrangement from WW1 munitions factories.

WickedlyPetite · 09/04/2020 13:06

My hairdressers does this.

KillerofMen · 09/04/2020 13:09

My old workplace used to close good Friday, Easter Monday and the Tuesday which was pretty sweet tbh.

Likethebattle · 09/04/2020 13:50

Good Friday is not a Scottish bank holiday so you sometimes only get the Monday off. I’ve had that in 3 jobs and you get the 2nd of January instead. I’m off Friday and Monday in my new job.

Vanillaradio · 09/04/2020 14:28

This is an East Midlands thing I think. My dad always got Monday and Tuesday and had to work Friday (worked in engineering at a factory/manufacturing company.)

PeachMoon · 09/04/2020 14:38

@BruceAndNosh I'm in NI, my workplace is doing Monday & Tuesday even though the official bank holidays are Friday & Monday. My partners workplace is doing Friday & Monday.

mindutopia · 09/04/2020 14:44

I work for a university and we closed yesterday at 5pm (Wednesday) and do not re-open until 9am next Wednesday. The bank holidays are still Friday and Monday though, and the rest of the days are paid closure days. I think that's very specific to FE and HE and not normal.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/04/2020 15:26

My office used to close Monday and Tuesday, but it changed about 20 years ago as most people preferred to have the actual bank holidays and no-one knew why we did Monday Tuesday - wasn't a mill or manuafacturering, normal office.

Blobby10 · 09/04/2020 16:42

Many years ago I was told that Its something to do with Good Friday not being officially defined as a Bank Holiday - its a Public Holiday as its a Religious Festival. Some places used to find it less disruptive to close for two days out of one working week rather than one day out of two working weeks. Don't know how accurate this was then or now Grin
