I had to get up at 3am to tell DD to be quiet - it's not music or voices, it's more the heavy footedness up and down the landing to and from the bathroom, Christ knows what she's doing. She's a slip of a thing as well, so I don't know why she sounds like a baby rhino when she walks.

I think we are in weird times with no routine of school so no enforced getting up "early".

There are many studies about sleep, that it isn't that beneficial to "catch up" on sleep by lying in on the weekend. It is the same as being on a different time zone every week. They also found that teenagers in countries without the technology we have manage to get out of bed much easier.

I think with the whole world in your hand in the form of a mobile phone, the ability to contact your friends without ringing a landline and getting their Dad, the TV shows that are available on demand and the fact that it no longer stops broadcasting programs at 11.30pm of whatever time it used to say goodnight all adds. I think we have all probably binged watched something, unwilling to stop the series, stayed up a bit later than we should and pay the price the next morning.

I have teenage sons, and I hate to say it but they usually get themselves up at 6.30am for school, they currently have their alarms set for 7am, they start their school work at 8.30 latest after showering, getting dressed and eating breakfast. They are in years 12 and 9. They are in bed for 10.

OP - the not doing school work is the issue and the possibility that other people in the house need to sleep as they have work the next day. Maybe come up with a compromise of a time you want them to be out of bed for.

DD(13) has reverted to being nocturnal, which is fine since the whole household is the same. As long as she does her chores and class work she's free to do as she likes, although I did have to tell her to get off WhatsApp at 2:30. She usually pops out for a wander around the block and a chat with her friends (her at the back gate and them hanging out of windows) which is cute and very retro considering they can video chat with each other. She's actually self-regulated quite well with minimal input from us.

I have to say that my parenting style is the total opposite of my mum, I'm more like my dad. We used to joke that mum was like the army and dad was Lord of the flies. My mum told me last year that she thought that I had done a great job with my kids (Thanks mum, only took you 20 odd years 😆) because they can function independently.

Mine got work done while school was on but now it's holidays and he has nothing to do (too young and shy to volunteer, will do limited chores, won't go out) so he is mostly online, usually in bed. Apparently this is normal .. it drives me up the wall but it's also not a great time to be fighting with them.

Oh, thank goodness for some of these recent posts 😅 I had to scroll on quickly from this thread yesterday as I have a nocturnal teen and questionable parenting skills 😕

Some teens are more compliant than others, some parents are more forceful than others. Everyone's an individual and will all find their own path.

Tbh, I've more important things to worry about atm than whether my teen is in bed by 10pm. These are challenging times and we all have to get through each day the best we can. Stay safe and stay sane everybody 🏠💐🍫🍷

@Bottomplasters yes they are this week and next as it's the holidays so I'm not making them do any work .

DD was telling me about some of the students in her university classes who have gone back to their homes in South Korea, China, Japan, etc.

For them, online classes now start around 10pm and go to 6am. They've had to train themselves to become nocturnal so they can attend their US college.

These are strange times.
