Regular gym goers

Hi folks. For those of you who were in the habit of going to a gym on a pretty regular basis : daily, every second day or whatever, how are you managing at the moment?

I ended up buying a second hand very old piece of kit to keep me half sane but I'm still going round the bend not being able to get out ( as we all are). Have you taken up running? I tried it but for some reason I can't get on with it although I guess it's a state of mind thing. Currently having my walk but I had to gear myself up for it. How are you getting on with it?

Lucky here, I'm a runner anyway and we have a spin bike, barbell, dumbbells, gym ball, pull up bar etc. However if you are looking for a fun mood lifter I stumbled across Bollywood dance workouts this weekend, proper fun. There's also a personal trainer Rachel Anderson who has made a free four week plan available to download and can be adapted to what equipment you have. And all my local instructors are doing Zoom classes. Could you make your run into a kind of green gym circuits thing? To enjoy being out there more?

bakedbeanzontoast · 05/04/2020 18:05

Thank you scrap - I'll look up Rachel Anderson. I'm not a joe wicks fan so will see what her stuff is like. Yeah when I saw the inevitable coming I was fortunate enough to find a PT who was flogging kit! 👍🏻

I've found body combat and pump on YouTube and my gym is doing some live classes too

limesoda · 05/04/2020 18:10

I'm using Lucy Mountain's home guide and like it. Alternating that with couch to 5k and the voice in my ear helps. I did run a marathon a million years ago so know I can run but it's nice having a plan.

itssquidstella · 05/04/2020 18:16

I'm running and have been for the odd bike ride as my daily outside exercise; at home I've been doing almost daily yoga (my gym has gone online) along with the odd HIIT class - some vía my gym and the odd Joe Wicks thrown in.

I miss my spin classes, but that's as much about the camaraderie as the exercise. I'll be fine as long as the government doesn't tighten restrictions about exercising outside any further.

Dozer · 05/04/2020 18:20

Jogging, depending on fitness you might need to do some jog/walking.

bakedbeanzontoast · 05/04/2020 18:32

Thing is I can run - I have done a marathon and many 10Ks but I find it hard without other folk for some reason 😤. I'll see if I can get into it. I got my hands on a bike also so there is that 😊

I managed to grab a turbo trainer so cycling indoors. Today was nice enough I went outside riding.

Im following my old kettlebell class routine at home so when I would of gone to classes thats when I do it at home. Doing kettlbells 4 times a week together in the evenings. (Already had a kettlebell)

Also got a pilates ring for stretching.

I prefer sprint running but without a treadmill I can't and I don't like running outside. I have got a skipping rope and thats supposed to be much more of a workout than running. So I have started doing that for different cardio.

ivykaty44 · 05/04/2020 19:04

I’m doing a mixture of running, cycling and yoga on YouTube

Keeping me going for now

My gym have put up classes for free

rookiemere · 05/04/2020 19:05

I've been walking an hour a day with the dog - today I jogged and walked and have committed to doing at least one exercise video per day. Our gym has posted some so I've done a couple of those, a few Joe Wicks and some weights ones - we have a few sets of weights at home. I've actually realised that doing my workouts at home are a lot more efficient time wise - half an hour rather than over an hour with driving.

Chochito · 05/04/2020 19:09

My gym is posting workouts each day for different goals and running live classes.

I really need some kind of mat as any kind of floor work instantly kills my knees.

AntennaReborn · 05/04/2020 19:10

I'm a powerlifter without a home gym, so it's definitely been a profound change for me.

I have been using the few bits I already had at home, and ordered a couple of cheap bits of kit when it started looking like the gyms would close.

I haven't got room for any proper lifting equipment, but I have some kettlebells, a weighted vest, a couple of dumbbells and exercise bands, so my coach is writing me a weekly program with these.

I won't get any stronger, but I hope not to lose too much strength.

I now also do cardio, to offset the loss of activity due to WFH. I don't normally do any cardio but I have been trying to do something every day

mynameiscalypso · 05/04/2020 19:12

I've been doing yoga and Pilates every day. I always did the former but only did the latter once or twice a week. The difference it's made in just a few weeks is pretty incredible. I'm missing the more cardio side (although I've buggered my knee so was only doing low impact cardio like swimming at the moment) but have found some dance workouts on YouTube to be quite fun. Pop Sugar do a couple of hip hop style ones which I suck at but are fun and definitely get my heart rate up.

Dozer · 05/04/2020 19:13

Podcasts are great when running.

SunshineOverStress · 05/04/2020 19:13

I’ve been following Courtneydblack on Instagram she does live workouts at 9am on weekday mornings and 10am on weekends I’ve really enjoyed them she’s so motivating!

Also have a selection of weights that I use indoors

Helenluvsrob · 05/04/2020 19:19

I bought a 2nd hand spin bike.
Tried peloton today. Bored.

Les mills on demand is better. Can do familiar spin and RPM classes.

Tried body pump with the pathetic weights I have and have satisfying upper body DOMS today 😂

Miss the gym so much but maybe I won’t do so many early short classes - 20 minutes minimum each way just for a 30 min class before work isn’t worth it.

Talulahoopla · 05/04/2020 19:24

I've got a power rack at home as well as a curl bar and some dumbbells. Don't have the full kit I'd have in the gym so having to vary my strength workout a bit but I'm getting there. Biggest challenge is sharing the space with DP since we both like to workout before work. PT has also provided a home workout plan which is good. I normally do a HIIT class or two as well which I'm struggling without. I'm not a fan of online zoom classes and live in a flat so probably not ideal to be jumping up and down. Have always done the odd run (maybe once a week) so have started increasing that and am going more often since missing the HIIT. Getting a bit tedious doing the same route day in day out though so signed up for a run for the world challenge as a bit of motivation and the small entry fee goes to charity as well.

doodleygirl · 05/04/2020 19:25

My gym has gone online, never been fitter. Managed to get some weights before lockdown Smile

GetOffTheTableMabel · 05/04/2020 19:26

Popsugar Are you using any YouTube Pilates videos? Any you would recommend? I was taking Reformer Pilates classes twice a week and I’m really missing it. Ido yoga regularly and am using online resources to keep that up but I’m unfamiliar with Mat Pilates and am not sure where to start.

HarrietTheShy · 05/04/2020 19:27

Jillian Michaels and the Insanity series are my home go tos.

PhoneLock · 05/04/2020 19:27

My gym is doing classes online. In between, I run and am lucky enough to have a home gym too.

Lifeaback · 05/04/2020 19:29

I’ve got weights at home so hasn’t been too bad although am really missing the solitude of the gym and it being ‘me time’ with no interruptions from the kids. I also downloaded the Shreddy app and the workouts on there are fab- it helps for me to have something to follow along as I find during home workouts I’m not as focused as at the gym if left to my own devices

Dulcedelecherocks · 05/04/2020 19:30

My personal trainer is doing FaceTime PTs so I'm doing that 3 times a week. She also has a fb page in which she posts workouts everyday and does live sessions of strong / shredded / zumba / metafit. If you're into those, send me a pm and I'll send you her page details.

devildeepbluesea · 05/04/2020 19:31

Les Mills Online - I have a.barbell, dumbbells and various plates so I can do bodypump, and I also love Combat. I'm doing Joe Wicks with DD and using my daily exercise to go for very brisk walks.

Running is a problem currently due to sciatica but hoping to get back to it soon.

CarolineIngalls · 05/04/2020 19:48

Running is essential. 5k early every day, and some core and xfit live zoom classes. I have ordered some kettlebells for me and the teen boys, but not sure they will survive.
