Regular gym goers

Hi folks. For those of you who were in the habit of going to a gym on a pretty regular basis : daily, every second day or whatever, how are you managing at the moment?

I ended up buying a second hand very old piece of kit to keep me half sane but I'm still going round the bend not being able to get out ( as we all are). Have you taken up running? I tried it but for some reason I can't get on with it although I guess it's a state of mind thing. Currently having my walk but I had to gear myself up for it. How are you getting on with it?

Not sure the kettlebells will arrive. The kids and I will survive.

Do you need equipment to do Les mills online??
Some great ideas on here. I've been raiding through old joe wickes YouTube's and luckily have a cross trainer and dumbbells. I miss the gym though. Sad

It’s tough! My PT is doing online 1-1 and group sessions so I’m doing one of those each a week. Also cracking out the 30 day shred and trying to jog (I hate jogging!). My (optimistic) aim is maintenance too....

CeibaTree · 05/04/2020 20:01

My gym have offered 60 days free for Les Mills on Demand and I already had weights at home so I can continue Bodypump. I also have been doing Yoga with Adriene and have started doing Couch 25k.

I was going to buy a bike at the start of the year and am really kicking myself that I didn't now. Otherwise im running much more often than I used to, walking loads and following online fitness tutorials. Hopefully I will be fitter than ever when this is all over.

My PT has been doing group HIIT classes on zoom, which have been great. Someone kindly lent us a turbo trainer so I’ve been using that as well.

Bought a proper skipping rope so done 30 mins skipping and then some floor body weight work. I have got some resistance bands but haven’t used them yet

I enjoy running outside but I get shin/knee pains if I do this more than once a week Sad

VetOnCall · 05/04/2020 21:28

I'm a runner anyway so have been keeping that up 4x a week, the dogs come with me and I walk with them the other 3 days as well. I usually do Crossfit and the trainers are doing daily Zoom classes plus uploading daily WODs scaled for no/minimal/full equipment so I'm doing one or the other of those 5 days a week as well plus Pilates at home 2 or 3 times. I'm still working but reduced hours so have more free time.

Great thread OP, thanks - and to everybody contributing, really good suggestions.

I have kettlebells, a step and a rowing machine but I'm really missing swimming and boxing. Husband not keen to hold the pads for me to punch them him...

BigChocFrenzy · 06/04/2020 02:36

I've a couple of dumbbells, pullup bar, standing light punchbag, a kettle, gym mat

Useful for warmup are my XCO tubes

I downloaded a Tabata album which I use for 30- 40 mins in the morning for whatever exercises I fancy:
bodyweight squats & lunges, pressups, mountain climbs, jumping jacks, abs, handweights, pullups

I normally do a HIIT class every day as well as walking - I can’t run as I ruined my Achilles and it flares up as soon as I run.
My PT is running group HIIT classes Mon-Sat so I’m doing those and also walking 4K per day and playing tag every night with the kids. I can feel I’ll lose strength as I have no weights at home and I normally do quite heavy weights at least 3x per week. It’s ok, I’ll get it back and as long as I do something I can get back into it once this time passes.

I do miss the gym though and I’m also finding myself eating way too many carbs as I’m out of my normal routine.

MrsJBaptiste · 06/04/2020 08:04

I struggled at the beginning, I'm used to going to the gym 4-5 times a week and leaving a red sweaty mess! There isn't anything I can do at home that will be the same (and burn as many calories) but I have thrown myself into YouTube videos.

I like the short Hasfit HIIT workouts but am now 8 days into the 30 day shred. The first couple of days were hard as my legs hadn't done lunges for quite some time! I'm into it now though and although bored stupid, will plough on until the end...

I'm stuck in for 12 weeks too so can't even do out for a quiet run.

SimonJT · 06/04/2020 08:17

I have quite a bit of equipment so can still do pull ups, weights, deadlifting etc. I have a bike so I use that with my indoor trainer.

I then do daily challenges as I always have some on the go, I do a daily press up and squat challenge. You add one more each day until you get to 100. I’m doing insanity most days as well.

We’re also going outside each day so I run as much as possible, I tend to run ahead so by the time my son and boyfriend have got to the park or wherever we are going I have generally managed to get 4-5K in.

Before lockdown I was trying to reach 100kg so I’m hoping I can carry on with that, if not I will be able to maintain my weight for quite a while.
