Has anyone seen Years and Years (BBC?)

For me, the scariest thing about it was how the events unfolded amongst mundane real life. How things changed so quickly. 2020 has been a bit like this, I think.

The series was unsettling as it was so close to home. Having a cup of tea and watching the news as unbelievable stuff happens.

I was an extra on that which was great fun. I thought at the time they made it so realistic and close to home. You are very right about how 2020 is panning out like that.

Youngatheart00 · 30/03/2020 21:22

Yes I watched it last week - brilliant!

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 30/03/2020 21:23

It's brilliant, I don't know why it didn't get more exposure when it was on originally.

Yeah, saw it when it came out. Really enjoyed it, an intelligent drama with dry humour and fab characters.
Too close for comfort right now!

Bluewavescrashing · 30/03/2020 21:29

The gran was fab especially!

It did get loads of exposure didn’t it? Loads of my friends & people at work were talking about it!

It dovetailed directly into the present day when the first episode aired, they edited in some of that days news. Very clever.

Powerplant · 30/03/2020 21:30

Agree it was brilliant think it’s on iplayer so tempted to watch again 😊

SimonJT · 30/03/2020 21:31

It’s a fantastic series, I get to see ‘Daniel’ most days.

It does feel like we are now in an episode of Y&Ys.

SimonJT · 30/03/2020 21:32

As an aside, Russell T Davies has filmed a new show Boys, which happens to feature the singer from Years and Years as the main character. Odd coincidence.

Glittercandle · 30/03/2020 21:32

It was really good and the soundtrack really elevated it.

Parkandride · 30/03/2020 21:37

I'm on episode 4 which made me so so sad. Agree the soundtrack is great

Bluewavescrashing · 31/03/2020 06:43

The characters are really well crafted from the start. I love the exchange between Celeste and her daughter when she says she wants to throw her body away and become data.

It's so dark but with a nice touch of humour and very well written.

@SimonJT that's intriguing, do you work with Russell? Or know him personally?

I watched it when it was on originally and it's really stayed with me, but no one else I know watched it. I've recommended it to loads of people and am just not sure why it hasn't had a bigger audience.

SimonJT · 31/03/2020 07:32

@Bluewavescrashing No, I have a very boring job, he’s my next door neighbour, but I knew him before that as I used to play rugby with his boyfriend.

Bluewavescrashing · 31/03/2020 09:27

Ooh interesting!

I loved it. Got a bit excited the other day as saw it advertised and thought it was a new series. But was just advertising that it was on I player.
Will definitely give it a rewatch though.
And yes.the way that we sat and watched the news with them as other things were going on was really clever.

PloptheBarnOwl · 31/03/2020 10:27

I loved this series. Wonder if anyone has kept tally of how many things from the series have come true. There was even a flu pandemic in the last episode, although they underplayed it. The placing of sick people in a "concentration camp" and waiting for nature to take its course is what is starting to happen in the Greek refugee camps. This series stayed with me like nothing else I have watched in the last year.

EL8888 · 31/03/2020 10:28

Yep. I really enjoyed it, it was very thought provoking

KenDodd · 31/03/2020 10:30

Yes, loved it.
Just shows you, be careful what you vote for.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 31/03/2020 10:44

Yes watched it on iPlayer. Very well done, the acting was brilliant. Episode 4 was heartbreaking.

GenXer · 31/03/2020 10:45

@SimonJT he was also in the film 'Riot' I think I read somewhere he was an actor but chose music. Glad he did, I like Years & Years - the band.

SimonJT · 31/03/2020 10:57

Yes he was, he’s been in quite a few things, not sure he will live down his outfit in Peter and Alice 😂 He’s very excited to be doing a bit of acting again.

Fuss · 31/03/2020 11:49

I watched it and enjoyed it all bar the last episode which felt completely different to everything that had come before it.
The ending was disappointing I felt.

SuckingDieselFella · 31/03/2020 11:55

It's frightening how many people can't tell the difference between real life and prime time entertainment.

Yes the series did latch onto things that were happening at the time, such as the populist leader (Emma Thompson) and immigration but it comes from one person's very vivid imagination.

In no way is it real. Please don't look for "messages" in it.
