Has anyone seen Years and Years (BBC?)

For me, the scariest thing about it was how the events unfolded amongst mundane real life. How things changed so quickly. 2020 has been a bit like this, I think.

The series was unsettling as it was so close to home. Having a cup of tea and watching the news as unbelievable stuff happens.

It's frightening how many people can't tell the difference between real life and prime time entertainment. Yes the series did latch onto things that were happening at the time, such as the populist leader (Emma Thompson) and immigration but it comes from one person's very vivid imagination. In no way is it real. Please don't look for "messages" in it.

I think we are all aware that it's not real. The reason it's good entertainment is because it's thought provoking, as well as funny in places.

The point I made in the OP was how quickly our familiar world can change due to events out of control, which is what also happens in the programme whilst normal family life carries on.

I watched it and enjoyed it all bar the last episode which felt completely different to everything that had come before it. The ending was disappointing I felt

Same, I thought it was quite brave up until then showing the stark reality of what could happen, then in the last episode they pulled the punch and basically said "nah just kidding, everything will be totally fine".

bit overlong and padded I thought, and of course featuring Emma Thompson who is on my permanent blacklist now.

there is plenty of better apocalpytic fiction about, both on TV and as reading matter.

I don't think it was padded at all. We needed to get to know the characters.

Emma Thompson was good in it, not great (accent not right) but she's since gone way down in my estimation re: flights.

Great article. Sums up my thoughts exactly.

I didn't realise Russell wrote it. I like him even more now.

Watching the Queen tonight with the kids was something I'd imagine happening on Y&Y. Quite surreal.
