We live fairly close to the local park and at the moment have a lot of dog traffic passing by as they go for their daily walks. With lots of time to look out of the window I'm realising that a good 50% of dogs passing are dachshunds! Fair number of Yorkies too and several greyhounds. We're in East London, when we visit (not at the moment obviously) my Sister just outside London Cavalier spaniels and jack russells seem to be the breeds of choice. How is it in your area?

(Yes, I'm very bored today and talking about dogs makes everything better, right?)

Lhasa Apsos
Pugs
Dachshunds
Anything doodley

Donkeytail · 31/03/2020 00:57

I'm in Ireland and little white fluffy things are the order of the day here. Bichons and bichon crosses I think. There is one German Shephard we meet regularly but that's the only big dog really.

PamelaPupkin · 31/03/2020 00:58

‘Oodles, ‘Doodles, ‘Poos and Staffies.

Mostly spaniels and labradors. NW market town.

We have a lurcher and a Heinz 57.

Babyroobs · 31/03/2020 01:02

Lots of spaniels and quite a lot of greyhounds and lurcher types, lots of westies and small terrier types - East Midlands.

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 31/03/2020 01:07

Northumberland town - Springers, JRTs, Poodle crosses, a German Shepherd and a Bedlington terrier are the ones I see most frequently.

Peppafrig · 31/03/2020 02:52

Jack Russell's and labs here

Gaelforce · 31/03/2020 03:01

Rural Ireland
Bichons everywhere & one snoring here beside me

Somewhere in the state of São Paulo, Brazil...

The Holy Trinity: Lhasa Apso, Shih Tzu, Yorshire Terrier. Popular for at least 16 years, when I began researching to buy my first dog.
The fancy 'uns: French Bulldog and Pug (all melting under a 35°C sun, with a rattling breath).
The newcomer: Border Collie (and it's mainly flats around!)
Popular but not the most popular: Miniature Schnauzer, Pomeranian (including in merle...) Dachshund
An increasingly number of mutts, too, which makes me happy.

Many of them are badly bred, though. Dog health tests aren't common enough here. One day I accessed the KC website and clicked through the best rated kennels, based on show results. It took me seven to find a single one mentioning any sort of test!

Hamiltoes · 31/03/2020 06:16

East Scotland...

GSDs, Labs, Collies, Huskies, and wolf-hybrids.

See a few of the smaller ones like pugs and jack russells too, but I think the bigger dogs are more common right now.

Bienentrinkwasser · 31/03/2020 06:27

Semi-rural Sussex village. Lots of spaniels, labradors, border terriers, schnauzers, collies, greyhound/lurcher/whippets, the odd doodley type (but way less than Brighton where literally every other dog is a cockerpoo), and Jack Russells.

MurrayTheMonk · 31/03/2020 06:50

Village in Home Counties.
Labrador's, spaniels, labradoodles seem the Order of the day here. Bit dull...Grin
We are out of place with our two odd looking Russell's.
However My most favourite village Dog ,bar my own of course, is an enormous Bassett Hound. I love seeing him lolloping along.

JoanJettPack · 31/03/2020 06:54

Here in my little corner of Greater Manchester, it's all French Bulldogs, pugs and beagles

mostlydrinkstea · 31/03/2020 07:13

Greater London and on the dog walking route to local park. Cookerpoos, Bichons and Schnauzers and the most popular breeds. There are lots of flats so we have loads of toy breeds with Poms and Jack Russells being really common as there isn't the space for anything larger. I used to work in market towns where as soon as the children were all at school mum would turn up,at the school gate with a rat on a rope (mixed breed terrier) or chocolate lab.

I'd love a Eurasier but it was always going to be next year's project.

Bubbletrouble43 · 31/03/2020 07:34

Coastal cornish village. Many many dogs, the majority of which appear to be these new poodle mixes, labradoodles, cockerpoos, etc

VictoriaBun · 31/03/2020 07:41

Live in Cumbria , lots of Border terriers .

PencilFace · 31/03/2020 07:47

I live in city subub in devon. Shih tzu's are by far the most popular dog around me, can anyone who has had one tell me what they are like? As honestly I would say 80% of the dogs around here are shih tzus or crosses. Would love to know why they are so popular.

After that its probably cockapoos and huskys.

MadamShazam · 31/03/2020 08:25

Village in South Scotland here. There's a real mixed bag of dogs here. I'd say mostly spaniels, but there are GSD's, Rottweilers, Newfoundland's, Labs, Mini Schnauzers, lots of crossbreeds and little dogs. Ours is a lovely old Springer. 😍

VetOnCall · 31/03/2020 13:10

VetOnCall I think I need to visit your parents, I love mini schnauzers grin So much character in those little faces

@BearSoFair head for the Causeway Coast in that case, you'll be in Schnauzer heaven!

@PencilFace I don't have Shih Tzus but they're popular because they're fairly easy little dogs. They're great companions, super for families or older people, they're very friendly, playful and affectionate and don't need lots of exercise. They're generally healthy and hardy, long-lived little dogs. Plus they're small and cute.

PencilFace · 31/03/2020 13:32

Thanks VetOnCall they are very sweet dogs and my whippet adores them for some reason. They do seem very chilled out and easy.

TSSDNCOP · 31/03/2020 13:45

Dachshunds

NemophilistRebel · 31/03/2020 14:01

Anyone know why breeds like the red setter are not more popular?
They look so gorgeous and seem so friendly when I’ve met them on the odd rare occasion

StillMedusa · 31/03/2020 14:44

mostlydrinkstea You need a Eurasier in your life Grin
Mine's the most loving, goofy and easy to live with girl! Toilet trained in a week, is happy to doze as long as she can have a couple of walks and preferably a play with her doggy friends a day.

Plus.you know, they are such portable puppies.... (she's 10 months old!!!!)

LilyRose88 · 31/03/2020 14:45

Small West Sussex coastal town here. Lots of Jack Russells, Collies, Greyhounds and Lurchers and some Labradors and Spaniels. No Dachshunds seen so far, which is a shame as I love them. I saw quite a few when I lived in London but they don't seem so popular down here.

I would love a rescue Greyhound but I have an elderly cat who is terrified of dogs.

VetOnCall · 31/03/2020 15:03

NemophilistRebel I'd say because they're big and extremely active; as working Gundogs they need a lot of training and exercise. They're too soft to be 'macho' big dogs and they're too active for your average family.

They're not really suited to an urban lifestyle or walking on-lead or at the local park, they're big open space dogs, bred to hunt over huge areas of open moorland etc. They have an innate hunting drive which needs to be channelled appropriately.

I don't think the Irish and English Setters do so badly as the other types though. The Gordons and especially the Irish Red and Whites (the original Irish Setter) are extremely rare.

I'm a Gundog person through and through and I am debating getting a Red and White at some stage. I'm in Canada now but would source and import from the UK.
