Most popular dogs in your area...

We live fairly close to the local park and at the moment have a lot of dog traffic passing by as they go for their daily walks. With lots of time to look out of the window I'm realising that a good 50% of dogs passing are dachshunds! Fair number of Yorkies too and several greyhounds. We're in East London, when we visit (not at the moment obviously) my Sister just outside London Cavalier spaniels and jack russells seem to be the breeds of choice. How is it in your area?

(Yes, I'm very bored today and talking about dogs makes everything better, right?)

I saw two people running with sausage dogs. Best thing I’ve ever seen

I once saw a guy running with an Afghan hound and a sausage. The Afghan was gracefully loping behind the man, hair flowing... Was like a slot mo Baywatch run without the cleavage Grin Then the little sausage, legs going hell for leather, bringing up the rear 😍

JustStayAtHome · 30/03/2020 21:50

@dementedma

oh!...... boring? how so? what am i missing?

our little black lab is 5 months old and has brought us all so much joy. we waited years for the right time to get a family dog. he's a delight!!

dementedma · 30/03/2020 21:55

Sorry juststay the dogs themselves arent boring. It just seems the most common breed round here. I know a Meg,Kizzie,Ludo,Malt and Heyra...all black labs. They seem very popular, but are sweet dogs

Labs here, in small village in north west. Although samoyeds seem to be taking over, were 2 beautiful ones i see now I see several. There is also the most beautifully trained collie I see and I want it so bad! Some sausage dogs and whippets too. Very few poo totes, only ever seen one and that was in a walk somewhere else! Some poodles too- a giant one I see regularly.

TheSpottedZebra · 30/03/2020 22:10

Border collies and JRTs here. And one woman with 8 chihuahuas doing her best to represent.

TheDogsMother · 30/03/2020 22:16

It's rural here so mostly working dogs. Loads of spaniels and labs for the shoots. JR Terriers are at farms and stables. Pre the Covid when we went to the pub the floor was a carpet of dogs 😍

Shmithecat2 · 30/03/2020 22:18

Wiltshire - lots of pointy dogs and gun dogs

VetOnCall · 30/03/2020 22:31

@VetOnCall a cross breed is still a breed of dog 🤷🏼‍♀️ but type cockerpoo into google and it changes to cockapoo. Also all insurance companies say cockapoo

No, a crossbreed is a cross of two breeds. A 'breed' by definition breeds true i.e. two dogs of the same breed when mated consistently produces the same breed characteristics and type in their progeny. This doesn't occur in crosses like Cocker/Poodle, Pug/Beagle etc. because the inheritance of genes and therefore characteristics from each parent is random and cannot be predicted.

From the 'Cockapoo Club of GB': The term 'Cockapoo' is a generic name for several variations on a theme, of a cross-breed dog, depending on parentage - so it would be impossible to exact a "Breed Standard" on it.

SingingSands · 30/03/2020 22:40

Most popular breed round here by far is what I call poodledoos - you know the sort. Anything crossed with a poodle. Mostly all look the same. Boring.

permana · 30/03/2020 22:56

I thought you weren't supposed to go running with sausage dogs as they are built so badly it can fuck them up?
(Although depends how much of a runner you are?)

SE London, millions of cockerpoos, some staffs (all incredibly well-behaved) frenchies, then a mix inc greyhounds/whippets.
Rarely see any German Shepherds.

FrenchBoule · 30/03/2020 22:57

The ones shitting on the pavement. Sadly the owners decided that in a wake of Coronavirus lockdown nobody is going to use pavements so what’s the point in picking up 😡😡😡

Labradors and spaniels, also quite a few staffies and Jack Russels

FrenchBoule · 30/03/2020 22:58

Highlands of Scotland

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 30/03/2020 23:04

Hampshire golden triangle - dachshunds, labs/lab crosses, Siberian huskies, several schnauzers, a fair sprinkling of smaller breeds such as pugs, Yorkies and border terriers.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 30/03/2020 23:08

Cockerpoos and Labradoodles mainly. Also pugs. A couple of years ago it was all Westies.

Purplecatshopaholic · 30/03/2020 23:12

East central Scotland. Very dog friendly area. Lots of labs and spaniels. Some smaller types, think wee terriers, shih tzus, westies. I have a large hound. Basically all types round my way, lol

224as · 30/03/2020 23:13

South London, daschunds, french bulldogs and the millions of designer type poodle crosses.

JaneEyre7 · 30/03/2020 23:14

Rural Gloucestershire - mainly spaniels and labs, closely followed by collies and an alarming number of immaculately coiffed thingypoos dressed up in ridiculous coats to stop them getting dirty Grin

I have two spaniels - one is a little angel and never gets dirty. The other is a complete bastard and came out of the river today dripping in sulphurous smelling mud/slime. I can still smell it in spite of the hosepipe and a full bath................

poorpaws · 30/03/2020 23:24

South Devon - black labs everywhere.

MissEliza · 30/03/2020 23:32

I'm in the suburbs in the south east. Definitely cockapoos, rescue dogs and golden retrievers are the most popular breeds in our area. We have a beagle, which is not the easiest breed!

Wincarnis · 30/03/2020 23:47

Dachshunds (mini and standard), French Bulldogs, Maltese, Staffies, podenco, Malinois, quite a few poodle mixes, beagles, various terriers (bull terrier, Jack Russell) & terrier mix, Black labs, Golden retrievers, Huskies....All in a European capital city

ALongHardWinter · 30/03/2020 23:58

Got all sorts around where I live. Quite a few labradors,German shepherds and staffies, but there's also a beagle,a couple of basset hounds,a St.Bernard,a Pyrenean mountain dog and a Japanese akita.I also once saw someone near where I live with a Newfoundland and someone else with what they said were two Canadian elk hounds.

123Dancewithme · 31/03/2020 00:20

Devon - lots of spaniels

StillMedusa · 31/03/2020 00:37

I (usually) go to a local country park , West Oxfordshirel. All the 'poos... especially cockerpoos. A fair few labs, one boxer, and a couple of German Sheperds, mostly bigger dogs.

Mine's the only Eurasier I've seen, which I love.. she's a talking point!

Thepigeonsarecoming · 31/03/2020 00:40

We don’t see many large breeds around our area, mainly terrier types

MuseumOfYou · 31/03/2020 00:52

Dorset village. Mostly spaniels and black labs.
