Let’s remember the days when the world was ours to take and the music was great.

Playing playlists on Spotify, currently Stone roses I wanna be adored

Jump in with your songs and what your life is like (circa 95 +/- 5 years 😬)

I'm 16.

On Fridays I got to town for a bit of underage drinking along with the rest of the Lower Sixth. I wear a black strapless dress with a split up one side of the skirt, cost me £18 in Miss Selfridges. I team it with black, strappy, chunky sandals, a jewelled choker, and the worlds smallest drawstring handbag that's barely big enough for a lipstick. My hair is pinned up in a spiky fan on the back of my head and I reek of Impulse O2, aka the scent of summer. My make up is frosted everything with shimmery lipstick. Stylish.

I can get drunk on pints of Carlberg, blue WKD, Smirnoff Ice, Bacardi Breezer (watermelon flavour was the best), and Archers Aqua all of which are £1 a bottle. Metz is nice (beware the Judderman, my dear) but more expensive. £15 is more than enough for a night out including a bag of chips and chipping in for a shared taxi home with friends.

Drinks promotions are everywhere. Buy one get one free. A game where you press a button at the bar and it lights up a board to see if you've won a prize like free shots, half price round, etc. We go to the boat on a Thursday night for £8 entry and all drinks free. It has a spinning dance floor. Someone always pukes and the floors are sticky.

Keeoe · 28/03/2020 00:05

Hahaha @TimeAintNothing, careful, your Tyneside is showing my love 😁 I was about to post very similar. I miss the boat. And the Mayfair 😔

RJnomore1 · 28/03/2020 00:08

I love your dress @TimeAintNothing

I’m wearing a strappy crushed velvet number and docs, which I got in the sale for about £20.

I totally forgot Metz. I’m drinking Smirnoff Moscow mule. I may be slightly stoned.

I miss the good old days. I was a teenager in the 90's. No mobile phones. No social media. Times have changed so so much Sad

MusicTeacherSussex · 28/03/2020 00:14

Its 1999 and my lipgloss smells of plastic. I'm practising piano to impress mr ridout, the cute music teacher before going to my friends to watch euro trash, steal wine and surf new grounds on AOL whilst eating tangy Toms and discussing our GCSE drama show. Asl?

TimeAintNothing · 28/03/2020 00:15

@Keeoe what was the one down at the far end of the Quayside, toward Ouseburn. Was it Foundation? I remember going to a club night there hosted by MTVs The Lick with Trevor Nelson.

mackerella · 28/03/2020 00:16

It's 1995. I'm 18, and interrailing with my best friend in the summer before we go to university. We use our 1 phone call call home every week (reversing the charges, of course) to find out how the UK singles charts are going - and, especially, whether Roll With It or Country House has made it to no. 1. The rest of the time, we bounce gormlessly around Europe, accidentally staying in hostels that are in the red light district, getting confused as we work out how many pesetas, drachmas or lire make £1, and skimping on meals so we can afford to buy a pair of blue suede Adidas Gazelles. It's brilliant!

RJnomore1 · 28/03/2020 00:17

I bought a giant pack of tangy Toms I’m home bargains about two weeks ago!

It's 1997-ish and I'm a student, and spending more time than I should watching my housemate's videos of Buffy and Xena. (Her boyfriend is a techy and he has a DVD player - wow! It cost £££££.) I put loads of wax into my short hair and spike it up, but if I go out clubbing, I put those teeny little butterfly clips in. I am mostly listening to Suede, Elastica, Stone Roses. I only started drinking a couple of years ago - I started on Hooch, progressed to Moscow Mule, and now I drink Strongbow or John Smith's (£1.30 a pint at the union). Like most of my friends, I use email, but the internet not so much. One of my friends has just bought a mobile phone, but I've no idea why she thinks she needs it.

lamppostdog · 28/03/2020 08:14

1995, I'm at uni, skinny and gorgeous (though didn't realise it at the time). I'm drinking cider and black whilst dancing to pulp and blur. I'm wearing checked hot pants and a knitted crop top with a choker necklace,

thefemaleJoshLyman · 28/03/2020 08:27

It's 1996/7 I'm at university love music especially Blur, Pulp and Suede. Wearing black boot leg trousers and a red strap top. Sometimes clubbing to house music with very short skirts.

Fuckinellitsme · 28/03/2020 08:31
  1. Living in Camden at the epicentre if Britpop. Going to the Spread Eagle and the Good Mixer every night, Smashing and Blow Up at the weekends too. Sometimes going to parties at Noel Gallagher's down the road or gigs at the Monarch or the Astoria. Working on Camden High Street in a clothes shop. Having about 3 hours sleep a night and still looking fresh faced in the morning, in the way you do when you're 22.

Lots of fantastic memories, especially now I'm all boring and middle aged. Not so great was the undercurrent of misogyny on the whole scene - it was shocking. But yes, I had a lot of fun and have so many anecdotes to wheel out at parties!

letsgomaths · 28/03/2020 08:34

Rocking it in my Reebok Classics without socks (I'm sure invisible socks weren't a thing in the 90s).

TimeAintNothing · 28/03/2020 09:14

Definitely no invisible socks, my Reeboks used to stink by the end of a hot day.

skinny and gorgeous (though didn't realise it at the time)

Whenever we talk about our youth I like to wind DH up by starting my stories with "do you remember when I was a hot, young fox in the nightclub...?" It's my version of 'during the war...'

TheVanguardSix · 28/03/2020 09:25

God the 90s! Salad days!
It’s 1995 and I’m 23. I’ve flown in from New York and I’ve just signed with Storm models. I listen endlessly to Massive Attack while I walk around London in my skin tight Katherine Hamnet satin jeans. My hair is flame red. My coat is royal blue. I live off Caribbean takeaway and silk cuts. I spend every weekend at Portobello market (where I buy a pair of combat trousers per week). My finger is on the pulse of living. Hand on heart, London was in its prime.
Now I’m pushing 50 and I look every one of my years. I still wear combat trousers every day. Grin My flame red hair is grey and ashen like my complexion. I’m so grateful for the youth I had. It was actually a very innocent time. Despite being a model in that industry, I never did drugs and especially in London, it was an incredibly creative time. I met some extraordinary yet down to earth people who’ve stayed by my side through thick and thin.
The music was fantastic!

CandiceSucksCandy · 28/03/2020 09:34

Its 1998, I am 17 and in Brighton.
I chain smoke Marlboro lights because it's cheaper than drinking.
I have discovered clubbing and ecstasy, luckily for me Brighton is filled with both.
I like to wear 1950s prom dresses I find whilst rummaging in the antique (junk) supermarket. I team them with furry car ears or fairy wings and DMs.
Sometimes I stick sequins on my face.
I can't afford a tattoo so I draw them on me before going out with felt tips.
I won't wear any trousers that aren't flared or wide legged. Or any top that covers my midriff unless it's my dad's old jumper.
I drive a VW polo that has 4 gears and is basically gaffer taped together.
I regularly sleep in my car after clubbing.
I go to very dirty gigs, often around Camden if I can find the train fare. If I remember rightly there was a squat round there that used to have parties.

I love and miss the 90s.

grafittiartist · 28/03/2020 09:43

Awe! It's 1993, I'm 18, finishing my A levels.
It's Saturday, which means a day in town with my friend browsing through vinyl in the record shop, and searching for something black/ tie dyed/ tasseled to wear tonight.
We both smell of wood musk, and may have a Marlboro light break in the park.
Happy days- the whole weekend was about Saturday night!!

Baypony · 28/03/2020 10:31

It’s 1998, i’m 18 and i’ve just got my first mobile phone. A Nokia with swappable cover. I’ve chosen the lime green one. It’s on a network called One to one (which we later nicknamed one to no one as the reception was very bad) My boyfriend and I are so pleased we can keep in contact without having to page each other, on the pagers we got free with our Nat West student bank accounts before going to uni. Great times 👍

AnneJeanne · 28/03/2020 10:45
  1. I’m 24. Living in L.A. I’m an editorial assistant. I go out every night. Eat chips and salsa every day, take weekend trips to Rosarita, cry over my divorce. There’s no mobile phones yet. I’m into Yanni! Lol!
AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 28/03/2020 10:53

In 1995 I'm 16 and go to parties on a Friday night with my friends, dropped off by my mum and usually picked up by my dad or friend's dad as they are out in the countryside at a rural country club where we can make lots of noise. I am wearing long floaty chiffon skirts, silk blouses and embroidered waistcoats, or jeans with a bodysuit and flower buckled belt from Topshop, all with my trusty cherry red DMs or platforms. I've just entered sixth form so have to wear business dress to school, which is usually a long black pinafore dress with a bodysuit, or a suit with a wrap skirt.

I listen to Oasis and Pulp, the Beautiful South, and am going to marry Marti Pellow. My best friends are mostly boys (who later I find out are gay). I work part time at the same company my mum works at and use my wages to buy music and clothes.

In 1997 I will get a summer job with a friend of my father where I will meet DH very briefly for the first time, but he won't ever remember that and we won't start dating for another 2 years!

RJnomore1 · 28/03/2020 11:33

Omg I forgot about drawing on tattoos!

Its 1993.
I am off to university.
Another skinny/gorgeous girl here
Living in blue Levi's.
Faded band tee shirts
Bandana as a belt!
Bottle of tequila hidden in the front pocket of said jeans.
My brother had more cds than me. And a louder stereo so I didn't get much choice.
Listened to stone Rose's levellers led zeppelin pink floyd
Played sonic the hedgehog with the kids next door when i was babysitting them
Or tetris.
Got my first car (maybe my parents didn't like the trip to university?)
And the best shop in world was the doc shop. A little local outlet for imperfect dms and samples. I loved my powder blue suede ones. Also had jeans, socks, belts, puffa coat.
All cheap and unique.

OlaEliza · 28/03/2020 11:55

No mobile phones. No social media.

Thank god!! I am SOOOOO glad those years aren't caught on tape 😂

theluckiest · 28/03/2020 12:13

It's 1994, I'm 16 nearly 17 and I'm doing my A levels. I'm a bit of a hippie so I have a really cool Army knapsack which I've embroidered with my fave bands. Levellers, Wonderstuff & the Beatles (I know it's SOOO retro but I want to be a bit 'alternative'Grin)

Going out later for an underage pub crawl to the student pubs. Wearing a little flowery dress, thick black tights, loads of beads, velvet jacket & docs. My mate is wearing a Victorian tailcoat and a top hat (but looks a bit of a twat if I'm honest)

Might send a pager message to the cute boy I like. He's got Docs too, can drive (Vauxhall Astra) and he's got an undercut with CURTAINS. Soooo gorgeous. Might even marry him 10 years later....Grin
