Crafty activities - what are you making?

I have got lots of half-done knitting, a cross-stitch I really don't want to continue (all the counting makes me...cross) and at least two different quilting projects - all long neglected and if work/home-ed would just calm down for five minutes I'd like to pick some of them back up.

What are you planning on making? New or something that's been waiting a while for your attention?

DD jumper almost down to the bottom of the body. I'm cutting out some pyjama bottoms for me next, I made the top ages ago!

MutteringDarkly · 03/04/2020 12:48

Oo what fabric? We always seem to put our own projects last don't we?!

Upcycled brushed cotton sheets!
I have about an acre of baby blue and pink. Both DCs will have to have brushed cotton PJs for ever more. Just trying to think how to decorate them. Maybe contrast pockets and buttons?

MutteringDarkly · 03/04/2020 15:39

Bit of contrast piping? I've been known to use kitchen string inside the fabric to improvise piping cord.

I'm knitting yet another pair of socks (photo), using some lovely Debbie Bliss yarn. And also a very easy squared blanket, which is my knit-in-front-of-the-tv project. Also planning to make some fingerless gloves with the beautiful and stupidly expensive hand-dyed yarn I just bought from Etsy.

My daughter and I have done several wet felting workshops in the past but it's a messy business and very time consuming. This Easter we had signed up to try needle felting. They were cancelled but I had bought some tools in preparation so I ordered a couple books off Amazon and we've made rabbits and owls. Working ourselves up to big project: a nativity scene! Requires patience and my back aches after...

I have a large blanket on the go that I'm crocheting- make-it-up-as-I-go-along pattern Grin which sits on my sofa so can be pulled over my knees to keep me warm as I crochet.

Then a blanket box/footstool thing that I'm re-covering.

A small chest of drawers that I recently bought splendid new handles for, that needs some holes filled before I paint and varnish it.

That's it for now. I try to keep it at 3 things on the go at once, because I also have a list of half-completed DIY jobs I need to finish too Blush

Omg soupdragon your yarn bowl/monster is pure brilliance Grin I love it!

I'm knitting a Henley style jumper. I took great pleasure in unravelling a project I was sick of the sight of and kept making mistakes on and I'm using the wool for this instead. It working out so well I'm eyeing my other WIP's with some ruthlessness.

SoupDragon · 03/04/2020 18:19

If you feed him lots of yarn and give him a good shake he barfs a shawl...

Grin SoupDragon

I'm making a few quilts (too many, one at a time would have been better). The first one was a freebie quilt along because the designer should have been doing a teaching tour that had been cancelled and she wanted to do something to keep people entertained.

The second one is one that I started at a quilt retreat in January, it needs to have some borders put on, but I'm not sure what type yet.

I put the binding on my bird quilt, it went to the quilter and came back before the lock down, and I love it very much. It's the first one that I have made for myself.

I've also been making a HUGE celtic quilt that I started in about August, but is on pause at the moment. I want to get back to it, so I must push forwards with finishing the others.

Wow they are amazing, BlackAmericano! A quilt retreat sounds lovely. I fancy a knitting retreat!

jmh740 · 03/04/2020 23:19

I've just finished a jumper for my cousins newborn unfortunately have no buttons, just started a matching blanket, the wool lady on the market is doing deliveries so ordered some more wool (and asked her if she has 3 white buttons) I'd really like to teach myself to crochet I've been to classes before and watched YouTube but I cant get to grips with the tension second row is always too tight can anyone recommend and good ways to teach myself?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/04/2020 23:27

Try going up a hook size for tight tension issues in crochet. If I’m crocheting I generally go up a full mm from the pattern recommendation.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/04/2020 23:49

Thanks lazylinguist. The retreat was fun, it helps that it was in a lovely hotel with good food and friendly staff, so nothing to think about really except sewing. There are knitting retreats, I've definitely seen them advertised although not at the moment obviously.

SoupDragon · 04/04/2020 08:21

jmh740 I have the world's biggest collection of vintage buttons if you'd like me to have a rummage. I'm happy to stick 3 white buttons in the post :)

8Track · 05/04/2020 15:40

I've relearnt how to french knit, and have used up some little cheapo balls of yarn that came with the kit. Happily they are the perfect colours and have inspired me to make a DDR flag butterfly to go in my classic East German car! Which I currently cant drive, sob.

I've got some knitting, a scarf, I started years ago. And hundreds of crafty bits my DPs gorgeously talented late wife had.

I've also got a necklace I need to fix or alter, not really sure how, but I'm sure I'll think of something!

8Track · 05/04/2020 15:40

Oh sorry, that was very me me me!! Am absolutely in awe of the crafts here, gorgeous eye for colour so many of you have.

Fenlandmountainrescue · 05/04/2020 22:03

I’m working on two granny square blankets and a scrapbook. I bought a cross stitch kit just before the shops close from a local place. Will start that when I’m in the mood.

Bakerofcakes · 06/04/2020 10:38

I am busy making rainbows for my grandchildren to hang in the window. They are being delivered on our daily exercise walk.

QuentinWinters · 06/04/2020 21:30

Mine was going well until 1) I ran out of quilting thread; 2) my son ruined the iron by experimenting with what would happen if he ironed a plastic bag Blush Now I need a new iron. Huh

LaneBoy · 06/04/2020 21:45

I still haven’t done any drawing at all! I’m pretty much recovered though so I think I’ll try in the next few days as I’m getting bored.

I’ve decided to draw my own picture quizzes as I love doing them

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/04/2020 11:26

I put the celtic knot quilt up on the design board yesterday. I'm glad to be back working on it. The second picture is the pattern that I'm working from, a bit of a way to go yet. It's going to be HUGE for a king-size bed, 105" square.
