Student Nurse currently out in practice-should we be pulled out

Just wondering if there are any other student nurses on here currently on placement in the NHS? I am a second year student on placement on a care of the elderly ward. I am loving my training but obviously these are very testing times. The university have advised anyone who falls in the at risk category to self isolate for 12 weeks but doing this will mean the rest of the year has to be deferred Sad. I am proud to be on the front line helping patients but as we aren’t being paid to be there and a lot of my cohort feel we should be pulled out of placement. However as qualifying and getting our pins relies on us completing 2400 hours in practice. The other university in our city has today announced all healthcare students currently on placements have to come home and won’t be returning.

Yeah I'm in the same boat.

I was about to start an A&E placement in a children's hospital.

On one hand I'm absolutely gutted I've only got 10 months until I qualify. Now it could be more. On the other hand, I'm waking up to reports of healthy doctors and nurses on ventilators because of repeat exposure to the infection. So that's what they are protecting us from.

I feel really really depressed at the whole thing.

I'm a 3rd year adult nursing student and qualifying in September. I've started back on placements last week and our cohort is in limbo as we heard that 1st and 2nd year have been pulled out of placement but we have to stay and haven't had much info as of yet on what they will be doing for the 3rd years. Also we are on our spoke placement and we can't go back on our hub which i will truly miss

My daughter has been pulled out of placement. She is a Midwifery student.

Hopefully you all get an update soon.

fairgame84 · 23/03/2020 12:47

You should be pulled out absolutely. Our 1st years have been pulled out. We had 2 second years on our ward on Saturday and we told them to go home but they wouldn't because of their hours.
If they aren't essential to delivering care then they need to go home. Medical students have been pulled out so why not nursing students?

NurseMyPurse · 23/03/2020 14:14

I’m glad people agree. It is totally ridiculous they are leaving in vulnerable and having us on a ward having contact with patients when they are trying to enforce social distancing. As well as this I feel like it adds extra work to the qualified staff as they have still got to find time to fill in our paperwork, sign us off etc. I love being on placement and I love being a (small) part of the NHS but I feel they (the uni and NMC) are not really thinking ahead.

@Katsg123 you must be so worried. I know it’s totally unprecedented but there has been absolutely no clear guidance about what’s going on and third years must be tearing their hair out and just hoping to get through the last few weeks somehow xx

@Katsg123 Our third year September coshort have been given the option to leave (for now) or qualify early with payment and help out.
Have you been asked if you would qualify early?

Toddlerteaplease · 23/03/2020 14:30

All of our peadiatric students have been pulled. But as were are really quiet at the minute, as all elective surgery is cancelled so there would be very little for them to do.

SilverOtter · 23/03/2020 14:40

I know it's not quite the same but I am a first year medical student and we have been pulled from all placements and bedside teaching, so you definitely also should be - for the protection of both the patients and you!

Katsg123 · 23/03/2020 15:27

@NurseMyPurse abosouley stressing and tearing our hair out. Also not able to meet with our tutors regarding support with our dissertation, assignment and presentation. X

Katsg123 · 23/03/2020 15:33

@Don'tBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou well I have heard something about that but we haven't been given the choice or option as of yet which is taking far too long as myself and many others would like to know where we stand x

missyB1 · 23/03/2020 15:40

My ds is training to be a radiographer, his placement was due to start mid April, it’s been cancelled.

NurseMyPurse · 23/03/2020 15:45

Our university is absolutely ridiculous then. It’s been handled in such a shocking manner, I totally understand everyone is stressed and no one has the answers but to hear other Uni’s have been so proactive in pulling students out is terrible. A woman in my class emailed today to see if there had been anymore movement and the email back just advised them to reread the email that was sent on Friday!

NurseMyPurse · 23/03/2020 16:09

We’ve just had an email to say all the uni buildings are closed from 5pm today for safety reasons. But the nursing students are fine to go into wards all day every day 🙄

UnagiSalmonSkinRoll · 23/03/2020 16:21

I'm in my first year of children's nursing and we are supposed to be on placement at the end of April, we are supposed to find out what are placements are today, but nothing yet, we haven't been told nothing at all.

Yogawoogie · 23/03/2020 16:25

I’ve sent our students home. They aren’t getting paid and I don’t want them to be at risk if they don’t have to be.
I would call the NMC and ask for their take on it.

Mummyme87 · 23/03/2020 16:27

I’m a midwife, all student midwives at my uni have been pulled out until further notice

NurseMyPurse · 24/03/2020 08:17

So finally last night we had an email stating that we are not to go into placement. Thank God!

My daughter is in her final year of paediatric nursing. I am not sure of the current situation with her. She was two weeks in to a twelve week placement.

She had no option and is now self isolating as it is looking probable that I have got the virus. I am staying downstairs and she is staying upstairs in her room. Not sure when she will be able to go back.

I know there were talks about them qualifying early so that they were then able to help out.

Sad all round at the moment and so much uncertainty.

UnagiSalmonSkinRoll · 24/03/2020 11:06

@NurseMyPurse yep, I got an email saying the same.

NurseMyPurse · 24/03/2020 11:38

Wonder if we are at the same uni Unagi 😂

UnagiSalmonSkinRoll · 24/03/2020 14:21

'Edge' not edge's Hmm

Toddlerteaplease · 24/03/2020 16:40

Really hoping they don't allow students to have a temporary PIN number. They just are t ready for it.

speakout · 24/03/2020 16:45

My DD is a second year child nursing student.
She got a text from her University yesterday- all her placements have been cancelled until the next academic year.
