Not trying to show off but my DS loves drawing cartoons and I wondered if he’d good for his age?

I know these types of posts irritate people but it’s just a bit of a distraction from all the shit.

DS has been doodling today, i think he’s really good but then I would cause I’m his mum 😄

I’m guessing drawing ability is age-related so how old do you think he is?

That's fab! I have zero artistic ability and am always impressed by those that do

seriouslystressedoutmama · 21/03/2020 22:45

I love his doodles, these would make great cards or once-off ar prints if you wanted to encourage him?

notsodimwit · 22/03/2020 02:43

It's really good Smile all the different little expressions Smile I thought your little boy would be older than 9 to do that.... Very well Done!

ALittleBirdhouse · 22/03/2020 05:22

Lovely cartoon. I would have said 8 or 9 purely because I had one like this myself. DS was obsessive about drawing cartoons at that age and made his own mini-comics for friends etc. I'm not arty so it was a real surprise. As someone else said, it is the surety and confidence of the marks on the paper that stands out. I took DS to the Guardian cartoon festival once. Not sure if they still run it but was fun for all ages and abilities and a chance to do mini-workshops with pro illustrators. One of the artist said the best advice he could give was to develop general drawing stills, just to have a go at drawing anything regularly. Mine didn't really take so much to this though and GCSE art was tough, but found he loved animation and film-making. Went on to do Art Foundation course (this is an FE course they can do after A levels), which really improved his general drawing skills at last and now doing a degree in an art subject. Good luck to your DS, he has a talent he can enjoy in so many ways!Smile

That’s great for his age! Well done for encouraging him as well, many parents are too quick to dismiss cartoons not realising the full artistic potential behind them.

HollowTalk · 22/03/2020 11:11

He's great!

Have a look at about drawing - it was highly recommended on Twitter. I think the guy is doing one per day during lockdown.

HollowTalk · 22/03/2020 11:13

Will Sliney draws for Marvel Comics.

FthisS · 22/03/2020 11:17

It is fantastic he is very talented. My daughter is also 9 she loves to draw and paint, not so much cartoons. This is one she did of a walk to a local beach on canvas

I like his picture, it has made me smile!

MoonlightMistletoe · 22/03/2020 11:23

Not saying he isn't already but I think he will be amazingly talented when he's older.

StudentHelp · 22/03/2020 11:27

Such a refreshing thread and lovely pictures!
Can’t wait to see it when it’s coloured

PurpleCrazyHorse · 22/03/2020 11:31

@Pteuropa Here's a link to a YouTube artist who has done some online tutorial videos for budding artists www.youtube.com/user/Nattosoup

Just thought it might have something of use. You might want to watch them first as I'm not sure they are filmed specifically for children and I've not watched them yet.

Wallywobbles · 22/03/2020 11:32

The path one is amazing too. Light, texture. Fab grass

Binterested · 22/03/2020 11:41

These are all great. My children would never be able to do this ! Nor would I come to that. Agree about the Blue Peter badge - great idea.

MissingSilence · 22/03/2020 11:43

I think he has a gift there OP

When I was about your son's age or a little older, I had a Peanuts anniversary book with Peanuts strips from early to recent and autobiographical sections from Charles Schulz. When I was a kid I just read the cartoons but as a teenage artist I found the Schulz sections really interesting, because it was the story of how he become an artist and how his career developed.

One thing I remember from the book is one of his early art tutors after school (may have been classes he took while in the army) giving the class an exercise to fill a big sheet of paper with drawings repeated three times. Whatever you thought of, like a teacup or a toothbrush or a sunrise, you did a little drawing of it and repeated it two more times. The book had Shulz's original drawing replicated over a double page spread and it's wonderful, just tiny pencil drawings but such a time capsule of what was on a young man's mind at the time, little pictures of razors and Hitler and sailors and beer bottles.

I don't produce art any more but I still do that exercise now and then just for fun.

I'm mentioning it because it fired my imagination as a child and maybe your son would enjoy it? Doing lots of little pictures is less pressurising than thinking of a Thing To Draw, and repeating it three times means you think about how you drew it and you only need to Think of Another Thing To Draw 1/3 of the time Smile
