Would you have a takeaway at the moment?

Some people are saying they'll do this but I can't help thinking it's just another unnecessary risk.

I can't wrap my brain around contactless deliveries. I see absolutely no difference between the dominoes delivery handing me a box or ha I forgot my doormat a box. He has still handled it quite a bit. This one has really tickled me.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 20/03/2020 14:25

I just read a huffington post article (sorry don’t know how to link) saying they don’t think the virus can be ingested and it is human to human contact that is the danger. So long as you have contactless delivery and wipe down/dispose of the containers whilst wearing gloves it’s very minimal risk.

You probably are more at risk from receiving post, unless you wipe it down with antibac.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 20/03/2020 14:25

It also said they think the virus can last on surfaces for up to two day’s Shock

Icecreamdiva · 20/03/2020 14:27

We are doing it tonight - it will support a small local business AND the Deliveroo driver who will leave it at our door.

Two independent local restaurants have closed to on-site customers and will be doing delivery only for the next few weeks. I hope that if we support them by using the home delivery service they will survive this crisis.

BiarritzCrackers · 20/03/2020 14:29

I'm planning to have Chinese tonight; I've been looking forward to it all day. It might be the last for a bit though, as I am concerned about money.

fedup21 · 20/03/2020 14:29

Local restaurants to us are trying to keep going by offering collection of their meals-I think it’s a great idea and will be trying to support them

EwwSprouts · 20/03/2020 14:31

Yes. Had a Chinese this week. I don't think going there is different to going to supermarket. Nobody else was in so definitely want to support now. Apart from briefly paying & picking up you don't have to stand within 2 metres of staff or they you.

theoriginalmadambee · 20/03/2020 14:31

@LuluJakey1 is spot on.

LazyFace · 20/03/2020 14:35

I would as my cooking is not great and to support local businesses. My husband has gone completely nuts though and said anyone could be maliciously infecting us with Covid like they did with Aids in the 90s...

GreatWesternValkyrie · 20/03/2020 14:39

We’ve cancelled our reservation for tomorrow night (Mother’s day dinner) but will be getting takeout from the same place. Honestly, I think this particular place could continue trading pretty well with just takeout services and the waiters doing delivery driver duties.

I hope so anyway, the family have been running it for 40 years and it has a loyal clientele - I’d hate to see it fail.

FlyFishingg · 20/03/2020 14:41

It is higher risk than grocery delivery. If anyone who cooked or packed it has the virus

Supermarket shopping has probably been picked up by half a dozen other people in store before being picked, plus the picker, driver, put in crates touched by different pickers and drivers every day, who are also touching steering wheels, car doors, their phones, the electronic signature gadget, etc etc.

InfiniteSheldon · 20/03/2020 14:44

Yep like a previous poster left on door step husband bought it in wearing gloves emptied onto plates threw gloves and containers away

ParisInTheSpringtime · 20/03/2020 14:44

I’m having a Chinese takeaway this evening, and I can’t wait. We were meant to be going to friends’ for supper, so this will make up for it in some way.

GemmeFatale · 20/03/2020 14:48

We live in a tiny village. 300 people, one pub that doubles as a b&b and a restaurant. One shop that is a cafe, corner store and antique type place all in one.

The pub has stopped serving food and now does pizza and booze delivery. The cafe/shop is doing takeout/basic grocery delivery.

DH and I are in agreement we get one pizza night a month from the pub and all milk/bread/eggs and snack food from the shop/cafe to help keep them afloat.

PennyNotSoWise · 20/03/2020 14:48

What's the logic of making the driver leave it on your doorstep? The food has been prepared by someone. Put in containers by someone. Put in a bag by someone. Handled by the driver anyway Confused Might as well just take it from his hands, it makes no difference.

Are you all throwing your Zoflora or bleach on the containers before you open the food or what? Bizarre.

CinderellasSecrets · 20/03/2020 14:48

I work at a well known takeaway franchise - we are all washing our hands and using anti-bacterial gel frequently, those taking the phones are cleaning after every phonecall/after taking a payment, drivers are washing hands every time they enter the shop, if someone is showing any signs of illness whatsoever they are sent home/told to stay away, and we are all hyper-vigilant about hygiene ect. right now and a lot of take-always will offer contact free delivery. I know I can't speak for all take-aways but from what I've seen I would trust it.

speakout · 20/03/2020 14:51

I would have no problem having a takeaway- in fact will be having one tomorrow evening.
I'll phone ahead.

Flymetothetoon · 20/03/2020 14:55

We had Chinese takeaway just last night. I think it's important to support our local business as much as we can.

Isthistrueor · 20/03/2020 14:57

No and it’s nothing to do with the delivery, I just don’t like the idea of someone else storing and preparing my food right now.

BeijingBikini · 20/03/2020 14:58

Yes, we got a Thai one last night. I want to support local business.

Thescrewinthetuna · 20/03/2020 14:59

Leaving it on the doorstep stops you breathing potential germs on each other and stops dirty cash being exchanged. Bring the boxes in with gloves on, decant and throw away the packaging.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/03/2020 15:00

Yes, a lot of the restaurants and cafes in my town have started offering deliveries as well. A good way to keep local businesses going at the moment.

mamma5367 · 20/03/2020 15:02

Hot food is fine! Ask delivery person to leave it outside your door, transfer food to your own plates and wash your hands after handling containers if you want to careful.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/03/2020 15:02

Isthistrueor all the food you get in supermarkets is prepared and handled by other people as well though.

be47 · 20/03/2020 15:04

I'd say yes to takeaways, but go for a local independent rather than a big international company - Dominos will have enough customers and money in the bank to survive this, your local pub/Chinese/Indian might not and I'm sure would appreciate the support
