Would you have a takeaway at the moment?

Some people are saying they'll do this but I can't help thinking it's just another unnecessary risk.

I would want to buy it, leave in the fridge and recook the following day. This to me would ensure no contamination.

Yep, recently had pizza. I would say similar risk to purchasing food in supermarkets as while chefs/delivery drivers could have Corona, so could shelf stackers and those that work at the check out till. Girls gotta eat!

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 20/03/2020 14:02

I would
To be honest usually when the driver (or rider in these cases) arrive they have used a moped so they have a helmet on with the visor for the eyes lifted and that's it .

MrsCVorFluWhoKnows · 20/03/2020 14:04

We'll still be getting takeaways.

Its food, we need to eat Grin

ShyTown · 20/03/2020 14:05

We’re doing it. All restaurants here have been forced to close and many really, really good ones have gone take out only. A 3 Michelin starred restaurant, considered to be one of the best in the world, happens to be in our neighbourhood but we’ve never been because it’s crazy expensive and booked up months ahead. Their 2 course take out menu is $35 per person and they bring it out to your car so actually pretty excited to try it! Take out is less risky than a trip to the supermarket (less people) which we’re all doing and it also helps support the local economy.

spiderlight · 20/03/2020 14:05

We're having one tonight. We had to cancel DS's birthday outing, which was meant to include a meal at his favourite Japanese restaurant, so we're getting a delivery from them instead.

Orangeblossom78 · 20/03/2020 14:06

How would it be any more risky than a shopping delivery. And the food would be heated / cooked also

Froq · 20/03/2020 14:06

I’ve been wondering about this.

The virus can survive on surfaces, especially plastic used in takeaway boxes, for up to 72 hours.

Then there’s the risk of the people preparing it not being hygienic enough to prevent transfer.

But this applies to everything. Your post, groceries, petrol pumps etc. So I guess if you just used the same precautions of washing your hands thoroughly then it should be fine.

SpringIsBlooming · 20/03/2020 14:07

I am surprised at how nearly everyone has said yes. But I am not having takeaways. The people who cook it, package it and deliver it could have the virus and pass it on. With supermarket deliveries everything is in packaging aside from loose fruit and veg which can be washed.

1980sQueen · 20/03/2020 14:07

I'm not risking it. Self isolating due to vulnerable child and no way would I risk it.

Froq · 20/03/2020 14:08

Spring are you also washing every packaged grocery with soap and water whilst singing happy birthday?

Are you washing your post?

motherheroic · 20/03/2020 14:10

Having a dominos tonight. They are doing no contact, so I'm gonna get them to leave it on the bonnet of the car Grin

StrongMama1989 · 20/03/2020 14:16

No!!!!!

SpringIsBlooming · 20/03/2020 14:16

@Froq Packaged Groceries I wash my hands after touching the outside of the packaging. Post I undo immediately and throw away the packaging and then wash my hands. The risk of the virus on packaged groceries and post that has been at lots of different temperatures during delivery followed by one delivery driver touching it is probably less than cooked food prepared and packaged by several people and kept at a nice and warm temperature for the virus and is something I will directly eat. I'm not eating envelopes and food packaging.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/03/2020 14:17

Yes, the supermarket deliveries have packaging that ALSO could have the virus on them

With 'just in time' deliveries some things are packed and delivered very quickly - I'm not sure people realise that

Some sandwiches are in shops within hours

I would definitely buy take aways and supermarket food

I'm not getting to the stage where I wash everything coming into this house - that way madness lies

StrongMama1989 · 20/03/2020 14:18

Wait.... you do realise that people have to prepare the food don’t you?? It doesn’t just magically appear in the takeaway box Hmm

MinnieMountain · 20/03/2020 14:20

We're ordering Indian takeaway tonight to eat tomorrow. Our favourite one can take 90 minutes to deliver, so this way we can have it when we want (plus curry is always tastier the next day).

Nancydrawn · 20/03/2020 14:20

Medical experts are saying the risk of transmission from food itself is very, very low. Higher risk on the packaging, though still small, and they recommend decanting the food onto a plate and safely disposing of packaging.

With the disclaimer that this is the best advice at the time and may change, and that it is better safe than sorry, it seems a good way to keep up local restaurants that are otherwise failing.

Lily193 · 20/03/2020 14:21

Definitely not. Too many unknowns for me I'm afraid, but I will be supporting local businesses in other ways.

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 20/03/2020 14:21

Yes !

Scruffyoak · 20/03/2020 14:21

Ours has Closed

Thescrewinthetuna · 20/03/2020 14:22

Just eat, Uber eats and the like do contactless deliveries now Smile

GiantKitten · 20/03/2020 14:23

DS2 lives in London & had been coming up this weekend - we would have had an Indian takeaway tomorrow night.

Now he’s not coming of course, but I think we might get a Chinese, in solidarity Smile

LaurieFairyCake · 20/03/2020 14:24

They have to prepare food in supermarkets too... Hmm

Biscuits/cakes/bread/pizzas/ready meals - and a billion other things
