What to do with cat?

My mum has recently passed away, leaving behind an 8 year old silver mackerel tabby. Currently, I’ve been going to the house 2/3 times a day to care for him, but this is unsustainable. I can’t take him in as my partner has allergies. I feel so sad for him, on top of losing my mum, and I can’t bear for him to go into a shelter. But what else can I do with him? He’s a well cared for cat with no health problems and documents stating his parents, grandparents and even great grandparents. Someone suggested contacting the breeder, but after 8 years, I’m not sure what she’ll say. I’ve thought about putting him online, but worry about people not being genuine. I just want him to go to a loving home. Does anyone know the best way to achieve this?

Sorry for your loss Flowers
How locked down is your Facebook? If you have good privacy settings you could tell your friends, and find a home that way or at least get recommendations for good sanctuaries etc. Or tell the vets? They often know of good owners on the look out.

Namethecat · 17/03/2020 08:14

The I think a shelter is better than online.
Shelters get the potential new owner and will visit the home to do a check . If the cat inherently a quiet home environment, and you tell them that then they will do their utmost to fulfil that request . With online it could pass it on with your best intentions , but you just don't know where he/she is going.

vet the potential

OhLook · 17/03/2020 08:15

Yes, go through a shelter rather than online. They will get new homes and sometimes also do home to come rescues rather than the cat actually going to the shelter.

FamilyOfAliens · 17/03/2020 08:19

If he’s a silver mackerel tabby, of any age, I guarantee he will be rehomed quickly. People will always choose a pretty-looking cat over a black or black-and-white one.

TyrionsNextWife · 17/03/2020 08:19

The breeder would also be a good place to start - it’s unlikely they could take the cat back after all this time, but they may know of someone suitable who’s looking for an adult cat or be able to help find a good home.

VivienLeighshandbag · 17/03/2020 08:19

I’ll have him if you’re close enough. Where are you?

FamilyOfAliens · 17/03/2020 08:20

And if you put him online (I presume you mean Gumtree), you will get people who will want him because he is a desirable breed, nit because they want to rehome an older cat.

FamilyOfAliens · 17/03/2020 08:21

And please don’t give him to some random on Mumsnet ffs.

sm40 · 17/03/2020 08:22

Yes would try breeder, she may have some contacts. People may want an already trained companion at the moment. If not a shelter. He will he snapped up quickly. As this is a cat related post, we need a picture. He sounds beautiful but is probably also missing his human so please act soon!

KittiesInsane · 17/03/2020 08:24

Go via a shelter. They’ll find him a home almost instantly, and they’ll vet check him, update his vaccinations etc too. I’d do it as soon as possible before kitten season really kicks in.

Boireannachlaidir · 17/03/2020 08:26

FGS be responsible and contact your local Cat's Protection where he will be cared for well until a suitable new owner is found to rehome him.

Don't put him on Facebook, gumtree or give him to anyone online you have no idea the wrong hands he could fall into. Poor thing.

VivienLeighshandbag · 17/03/2020 08:28

@FamilyOfAliens putting aside that your comment is rude, unnecessary and you know fuck all about it, everyone’s “random” on Mumsnet as it’s an anonymous forum. Do you really think that the OP would just hand over an animal where they are concerned for their welfare without checking anything out?

Do you really think that the OP would just hand over an animal where they are concerned for their welfare without checking anything out?

There was a poster a couple of weeks ago who was planning to do exactly that.

thegreylady · 17/03/2020 08:33

Look at the Facebook page British Shorthair Cat Lovers. I think you will be able to rehome him quickly. What part of the country is he in?
You can also look at The Litter Tray section of Mumsnet.

Nannyloubie · 17/03/2020 08:36

Definitely a shelter, we got our cat from a shelter after his owner had died.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/03/2020 08:44

Find a local rescue where the cat will live in a foster home until a suitable permanent home is found.

I would expect that he will be rehomed quickly due to his colouring. He will also be totally loved and spoiled by his fosterer while waiting too.

81Byerley · 17/03/2020 08:48

Are you in the UK? Cat Protection are good at finding decent homes. I would contact the breeder. They may be able to help, even if it's just to put you in touch with that breed's rescue society, or you could look online for the information. Someone will be delighted to take on and love your Mum's cat. I'm so sorry that you lost your Mum.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/03/2020 08:51

I know of someone on here who took the two dogs of another poster who had to go to a women’s refuge.

Please don’t dismiss offers that could be genuine.

diddl · 17/03/2020 08:59

I would contact the breeder first & see what they say.

They might have some ideas.

noloh1 · 17/03/2020 09:32

He’s looking a bit sad today, curled up on my mums bed. But he’s had plenty of cuddles. Thanks for the advice, I definitely won’t be advertising online. Today I will contact the breeder and if no luck, I will ring cats protection. All I want is for him to go to a loving home as it is so sad to be even thinking about rehoming him.

Gosh, he's a lovely looking lad. I really hope you are able to find him a loving home. I would advise approaching a shelter, not the breeder because breeder by definition regards animals as a profit making venture. Good luck and let us know how it goes. He deserves a loving family.

BetelgeuseIsOrionsArmpit · 17/03/2020 09:38

He's such a beautiful cat. I hope that he can be rehomed soon.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 17/03/2020 10:00

Is there no one in your family that could take him....it seems so sad that he's lost his owner and will now be uprooted....i'm a sucker for a cat with a sob story...you are not in Norfolk are you?
