What to do with cat?

My mum has recently passed away, leaving behind an 8 year old silver mackerel tabby. Currently, I’ve been going to the house 2/3 times a day to care for him, but this is unsustainable. I can’t take him in as my partner has allergies. I feel so sad for him, on top of losing my mum, and I can’t bear for him to go into a shelter. But what else can I do with him? He’s a well cared for cat with no health problems and documents stating his parents, grandparents and even great grandparents. Someone suggested contacting the breeder, but after 8 years, I’m not sure what she’ll say. I’ve thought about putting him online, but worry about people not being genuine. I just want him to go to a loving home. Does anyone know the best way to achieve this?

Gorgeous cat.

I am not impressed with the breeder's response. A good breeder would not care how much time had passed.

I know my dog breeder would take my dog back if there were any problems at all no matter what age he was

fastliving · 17/03/2020 17:43

Horrible breeder!
Hope you find a new home for him soon

BubblesBuddy · 17/03/2020 17:46

Yes. The Whiskers cat on their boxes is a silver tabby shorthair. This is a desirable cat. At his age he isn’t really worth much but I would settle for a loving family home that understands his needs. British shorthairs are not always lap cats. They can be quite independent but make up for it in looks!

lifeisgoodmostofthetime · 17/03/2020 17:51

He looks a little sad. Understandable with the circumstances. If your in the Manchester area I'd be happy to have him. Obviously you can come round to my house and check things out and meet my cat etc before deciding.

VenusClapTrap · 17/03/2020 18:01

He’s gorgeous. He’ll have no trouble finding a home through a shelter. I’d have him like a shot.

Please carry on visiting as often as you are; cats that are used to company get very stressed if that is taken away. Ignore the poster who said he can be left 2-3 days.

Sorry for your loss. Flowers

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/03/2020 18:09

I wouldn’t leave a cat 2 or 3 days.

There will be a breed rescue out there, they apply a reforming fee so they don’t end up as dog bait Sad

Almostfifty · 17/03/2020 19:05

She isn't leaving the cat 2 or 3 days, she's going in 2/3 times a day.

Babdoc · 17/03/2020 19:13

Please use Cats Protection, OP. They do a home visit on potential adopters, check suitability, won’t place the cat on a busy main road, or with young kids/other pets if the cat is not used to that. They microchip, immunise, neuter and vet check every cat. They’re very thorough and reliable. I got my lovely cat from them and I was very carefully checked out, as were my house and garden, cat flap, access etc.

Mummymum38 · 17/03/2020 19:39

He looks gorgeous, sorry for your loss . Definitely try Cat Protection, we have homed 2 lovely cats from there and they came to check our house first and meet us to make sure the cats suited our family.

duckduckgoosealbatross · 17/03/2020 20:00

Oh he is so beautiful, OP! I'm sure Cat's Protection could find a handsome boy like him a lovely new home. Good luck ThanksThanks

Changeofname79 · 17/03/2020 20:04

My DH was allergic, took anti histamine for a week or so and has been fine ever since. Would he be willing to try even whilst you tried to find a home.

nickname302 · 17/03/2020 20:04

My dad was allergic to cats, but a few weeks of antihistamines and he's fine with my two now. People can often stop being allergic to cats they live with. I also use a furminator on mine during molting season and it completely sorts the hair.

FamilyOfAliens · 17/03/2020 20:28

My rescue cat from Cats Protection is a brown tabby and she hardly moults at all. The owner of our independent pet shop says if you give them good quality food it shows in the condition of their coat, and reduces moulting.

The vet said she’d never seen a tabby cat with such a shiny coat Smile

Horsemad · 17/03/2020 20:56

Please contact either Cat's Protection or The Cinnamon Trust.
I'm a volunteer dog walker for the Cinnamon Trust and I know they foster/re-home pets who have lost their owners.

He's beautiful, please don't let him go just anywhere, either of the above charities will take time to re-home him properly.

Parker231 · 17/03/2020 20:59

We got one of our cats from a local shelter. She was 14 and the owner had died. We’ve had her two years now and she’s an important part of our family.

Mrsfussypants1 · 17/03/2020 22:16

Strawberry Persian cat rescue is a fab uk based rescue for pedigree breeds and rehome British shorthairs too. That's were my MIL got hers.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 17/03/2020 22:18

DH is allergic to cats. He used to take an antihistamine once a day for a few weeks, then he was fine. Basically once his body gets used the ambient cat-ness, he doesn't react. The only thing is that he would avoid being scratched by our cat and he would avoid rubbing his face/eyes if he's touched her. It helped that our cat wasn't much of a lap cat and we didn't allow her in our bedroom (just kept the door shut).

When we got our cat from the RSPCA, DH had to visit several times to see how his allergy was affected.

DottyandOtty · 17/03/2020 22:28

We had a friend who was allergic to cats but her children were desperate for one. She got a kitten and took an antihistamine every day but after a couple of months realised she didn’t need them anymore.

Considering you’re already planning on rehoming him, why don’t you have him at yours and see if the allergy can be resolved while you explore options? It seems a shame if that’s the only obstacle and it’s going to cause you more heartache right now.

Crunchymum · 17/03/2020 22:29

Can't you rehome your partner? Grin

He looks so sad @noloh1

Sorry, I am not trying to make you feel worse.

Do your best for him and sorry about your mum Flowers

Cherrysoup · 17/03/2020 22:33

Think someone already mentioned this, but the British short haired Society should be able to help re-home him. I’m appalled ate the breeder’s response. Very irresponsible of him/her.

AlexaAmbidextra · 18/03/2020 02:19

You don't need to visit 2 or 3 times a day. Once every 2 or 3 days is fine. Cats are pretty self-sufficient.

Don’t be bloody ridiculous. What is the poor cat supposed to do for food and fresh water on the two days nobody visits? This cat has been a pet, used to having regular food. He hasn’t been expected to fend for himself so he can’t start now.

AlexaAmbidextra · 18/03/2020 02:22

She isn't leaving the cat 2 or 3 days, she's going in 2/3 times a day.

Almostfifty. Yes, we know. But some fool upthread suggested she only needed to go in every two to three days.

ALongHardWinter · 18/03/2020 02:47

Please please don't put him on Facebook or Gumtree or anything like that. God knows who he'll end up with. Please take him to an animal shelter. He will be rehoused pretty quickly as he is gorgeous. 💖 And the staff will vet any potential 'takers' for him.

Shinesweetfreedom · 18/03/2020 02:54

Def not online.Could you try a rescue as well as Cats P. X

ALongHardWinter · 18/03/2020 02:54

Meant to add,I would strongly recommend The Blue Cross charity. Their animal shelters do wonderful work and are really careful and thorough when rehoming pets.
