What to do with cat?

My mum has recently passed away, leaving behind an 8 year old silver mackerel tabby. Currently, I’ve been going to the house 2/3 times a day to care for him, but this is unsustainable. I can’t take him in as my partner has allergies. I feel so sad for him, on top of losing my mum, and I can’t bear for him to go into a shelter. But what else can I do with him? He’s a well cared for cat with no health problems and documents stating his parents, grandparents and even great grandparents. Someone suggested contacting the breeder, but after 8 years, I’m not sure what she’ll say. I’ve thought about putting him online, but worry about people not being genuine. I just want him to go to a loving home. Does anyone know the best way to achieve this?

Hi @noloh my offer is genuine - if you are in my area, I would love to re home him and could do so via our local Cat shelter to assure you he’ll be in a good home. Your welcome to message me if you have no luck with the breeder.

Thelnebriati · 17/03/2020 11:08

@noloh1 Please contact the breeder first. You've assumed they won't take responsibility without even talking to them!

bookmum08 · 17/03/2020 11:50

Take the cat. Put allergic partner in the shed Grin.

HazelBite · 17/03/2020 12:22

OP both me and my DIL have homed older cats via the RSPCA when their owners have died,
We were assessed and visited He is a splendid looking fellow and not really that old, I'm sure you will have no difficulty finding him a suitable and loving home via Cats Protection or the RSPCA

FamilyOfAliens · 17/03/2020 12:38

If you are in my area, I would love to re home him and could do so via our local Cat shelter to assure you he’ll be in a good home.

Why do you think the OP is incapable of doing this herself?

VivienLeighsHandbag · 17/03/2020 12:59

@FamilyOfAliens I mean rehome him with me, given my earlier posts. Try to keep up

FamilyOfAliens · 17/03/2020 13:06

You sound lovely, vivien.

Just the sort of person I’m sure the OP would love to give her Mum’s cat to.

Wolfiefan · 17/03/2020 13:09

If the breeder can’t help then the CinnamonTrust may. They do permanent foster in cases like this.
Sorry for your loss OP. Flowers

And your input to the OP’s thread has been so helpful and constructive in solving her dilemma @FamilyOfAliens

And now you’re the OP’s bff. Hilarious.

I have allergies and still have a cat!

You do become sort of immune to the one you have in your own home.

Are you sure your partner couldn't get used to him?

He's gorgeous.

Wolfiefan · 17/03/2020 14:30

You can develop a tolerance. Or it can spiral and become much worse.

noloh1 · 17/03/2020 15:22

The problem with him is, even though he has short hair, he has lots of hair. Even from one stroke loads of hair comes off him! Thank you for all the advice so far. The breeder got back to me and recommended pets4homes, which I don’t feel happy about.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 17/03/2020 15:30

Oh no. That’s a bad idea. Pedigree specific rescue?
TBH The hair often isn’t the problem.

Frownette · 17/03/2020 15:33

How about your mum's neighbours?

Sorry for your loss Flowers

BubblesBuddy · 17/03/2020 15:39

He is a British Short Hair Silver tabby! I love them and used to have one. Cats can find it difficult to settle in with new owners but if he has his pedigree papers you should be able to rehome him via a charity. Also, what about your mums neighbours? They might even know him. Don’t advertise him or use an internet site. I think he is a star! Mine was from the family of the cat in the first Harry Potter film. British shorthairs are easy to look after. He might lose a bit of fur before summer. My British Blue used to do this.

amazedmummy · 17/03/2020 15:42

That is the most gorgeous cat! If he pops up on any of my local rescues I'd be tempted! Local rescue is your best shout. They'll vet adopters.

bruisedbride · 17/03/2020 15:43

Where about are you OP in the country?

nicerainyweather · 17/03/2020 15:44

You don't need to visit 2 or 3 times a day. Once every 2 or 3 days is fine. Cats are pretty self-sufficient.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 17/03/2020 15:48

Sorry for the loss of your mum.

He's gorgeous, poor boy.

Please do try Cats Protection, also Blue Cross. They rescue & rehome, & check out potential owners. We got our wonderful cat from them & they have lots of branches. Or try the RSPCA. In London there's the Mayhew.

There may also be independent cat rescues near you.

BubblesBuddy · 17/03/2020 15:49

Catchat.org gives you details of rehoming organisations for pedigree cats. Griselian might help too. You should be able to find an organisation nearer to you. I think the current arrangement is not sustainable so good luck. If you are near me......

ifIwerenotanandroid · 17/03/2020 15:50

Just seen the post above mine. He must be stressed & confused about the loss of your mum. Having a routine & going in once a day should be OK, I think. I wouldn't leave it 2-3 days.

MauriceandAlec · 17/03/2020 16:04

Definitely local shelters. We're looking for a companion for our rescue cat.

PrinnyPree · 17/03/2020 16:20

Maybe contact your local shelter and say you'll look after him at your Mums until a suitable owner is found, then he doesn't have to go into the cattery, you'd effectively be a foster and the shelter will do the home checks.

Pets4homes is just basically gumtree for animals. If you do go down that route say you insist on home checks yourself so they have to be local, proof that the new owner will insure the cat and I'd ask for a 3 figure rehoming fee (which you can donate to a shelter if you wish) that will at least get rid of the cat hoarders, baiters or scalpers looking to resell pedigree cats for a profit.

Do not offer the cat for free x

Good luck OP he's gorgeous and so sorry for the loss of your Mum. Xxx

Millymaud · 17/03/2020 16:29

He looks like the cat on the whiskers advert Smile
