What blows your mind?

Every now and then, the whole “you are born with every egg you’ll ever ovulate” thing blows my mind. Means that my Mum also made the cells which made my twins, who were born 2 years after she died.

That we live closer in time to the T-Rex than the T-Rex did to the stegosaurus. I only found this out quite recently and am struggling to get my head round it.

Also (and I know I’m the last to know this) that Jools Holland’s Hootenanny is filmed in advance. It’s like my life was a lie.

nameymcnamechangeagain · 09/03/2020 20:52

Time. I often ponder how I can completely understand those crazy scientists who drive themselves into a manic state (I don’t know what I’m basing that on) because the more I think about time and how everything is not real and everything in the world gets a name because someone randomly just called it that and we all just accept it and my head just HURTS!!!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 09/03/2020 20:56

How fully laden A380s and even heavier cargo planes get off the ground.

Yeah I know physics yadda yadda but the things are so fucking enormous!

(And here's a pic of the gorgeously sweet Beluga XL cargo plane - I love this paint job!)

That and the concept of seeing starlight here years after the star is dead.

What blows your mind?

The postal system... I work for a mail order company and it still amazes me that parcels sent one day arrive miles away the next day. I'd love to follow a parcel and see what it goes through on its journey Grin

doodlejump1980 · 09/03/2020 21:00

If someone was viewing our planet from 16million (or however long) light years away, would they see dinosaurs?

NC as I posted about this on Facebook 😂

Mine is simple:

That I never knew the plug in my bath fitted into the overflow when not in use to make it look neat.

My friend put it in there this weekend after a bath and I was honestly gobsmacked that I never knew about it!

BadEyeBri · 09/03/2020 21:01

The randomness of there being life on earth.
And the fact that energy is not created nor destroyed so we will all continue in one form or another (at an atomic level) Mad.

SausageCrush · 09/03/2020 21:02

Another one for how great big planes take off and stay in the sky Confused
Oh, and electricity. How mind boggling it is.
Nature in all its glory.
The Fibonacci sequence.

doodlejump1980 · 09/03/2020 21:06

Also by the time t-Rex was on the planet ALL the Stegosaurous’ were already fossils...

Flying. Going along 40,000 feet above the earth, minus 57 outside, and still it keeps moving forward, the people inside drinking gin and eating pringles.

HannibalHayes · 09/03/2020 21:12

That people can still think Brexit is a good idea...

AhoyMrBeaver · 09/03/2020 21:16

I get a bit awestruck every time I look into the sky and see aircraft. There are people up there! It's amazing.

MrsGrindah · 09/03/2020 21:19

That fish that was on one of David Attenborough s progammes. To attract a mate it spends hours making awesome and complex symmetrical patterns in the sand. It made me cry.

TheoneandObi · 09/03/2020 21:19

Travelling g by plane across time zones always freaks me out. I lie in bed when I get home working out where I was 24 hours ago and marvel to myself that I may as well have time travelled.

Onmyright · 09/03/2020 21:25

The horrendous awful accidents, illness and damage the human body can survive and on the other hand the simple freak things that can kill a person.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 09/03/2020 21:25

Time

1 billion seconds. Doesn’t seem that long. However it’s the equivalent of 32 years.

Are we a mind with a body or a body with a mind. It’s always fascinated me The way we say things like “my arm” “my leg”
almost as though they are possesions of us rather than “us”

Also the one about the Stegosaurus and
T-Rex wow.

Smartanimal · 09/03/2020 21:29

Nothing

thebeatofthedrum · 09/03/2020 21:30

Colour.

We all call red, red but how do I know that what you see as red is the same colour I see or is what you see as red, what I see as green, or blue, or purple.

I can't even really explain it, it hurts my brain.

incognitomum · 09/03/2020 21:31

@UnitedRoad I'm the same regarding Hootenanny.

sageandroses · 09/03/2020 21:32

The fact that there is someone in the world who has done 'the most' of something but will never know it. Eaten the most chocolate, been to the most cities, worked the most hours, drank the most water, ran the most miles.... I know these probably change frequently but it baffles me

Pollaidh · 09/03/2020 21:33

Size of space. I did an undergrad module in astrophysics and spent far more time than I should trying to 'imagine' the universe, or even the country, down to something smaller than a pin-head.

Seem to manage ok with deep time and evolution, possibly because I studied them extensively and when you look at the geological record you can see both, which makes it easier to believe.

sixsquidswimming · 09/03/2020 21:35

Why people think jools Holland is worth watching on NYE (or any time)

And wtf ds has put my kindle, I can't sleep without it

letsgomaths · 09/03/2020 21:35

Being lost or disorientated is something I find fascinating; it's as if I'm no longer anchored to the world. If I got lost as a child, I remember finding it weirdly thrilling (as well as scary). When I played pin the tail on the donkey, I remember just how odd it felt being blindfolded and spun round, not knowing which way I was facing, as well as not being able to see the pattern on the scarf.

aWeaponCalledtheWord · 09/03/2020 21:36

fax machines.

i didn’t understand them in the 80s, i don’t understand them now.

Riv12345 · 09/03/2020 21:38

Flying

When the world will end??
It make my teeth itch thinking about it
