Best supermarket curry?

HaggisTheGreat · 09/03/2020 13:33

Had a disappointing/overpriced Indian takeaway this weekend. Still annoyed about it. So want to get something from the shops for that next “want a curry but too lazy to make one” moment. Any recommendations? Or any good ready made curry sauces that you rate?

According to ds1 supermarket curries in the following order.

Waitrose
M&S
Morrisons
Tesco if desperate!

PickAChew · 09/03/2020 13:48

Waitrose are lovely but a bit tight with the portions. Markses more generous but more Conservative with the spicing. Their best ever chicken tikka masala is delish.

shivbo2014 · 09/03/2020 13:49

Sainsburys King Prawn Makhani is lovely.

Thanks! Looks like Waitrose is a top contender so far. Any particular favourites within their range?

I don't eat meat so I haven't obviously had a lot of the curry out there but Iv enjoyed m&s curry.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/03/2020 14:03

Both Waitrose and M&S seem to have a permanent/almost always on £10 curry meal deal. Best thing to do is go and buy a selection of the things you like.

No point me telling you the M&S best ever chicken tikka masala is indeed the best ever, if you don't like CTM or are vegetarian.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 09/03/2020 14:06

Waitrose have an Indian meal deal on for another week I think if you want to test their wares.

As an accompaniment I like buying the flat poppadoms from the World Foods aisle if you can find them and popping them in the microwave. Aldi garlic naan breads are also decent - 2 for 46p and they're long-dated Smile

sittingonacornflake · 09/03/2020 14:07

I love the Aldi lamb rogan Josh ready meal. It's delicious. Saves it serves 2 but that's a lie it serves 1. I've checked many times

Purpletoes · 09/03/2020 14:07

Not a ready meal as such but very easy to make is the spice tailor range in lots of the supermarkets. Has all the components just add your meat veg etc. Tastes like a good takeaway.

The goan curry is our favourite

TeddyIsaHe · 09/03/2020 14:12

Not a supermarket, but they do deliver - Cook ready meals. Easily the best ready meals I’ve ever had, my mum bought me loads just after Dd was born and I’ve never eaten so well! Their curries are especially excellent.

Clawdy · 09/03/2020 14:13

Charlie Bigham ready meals do a delicious Tikka Masala, and another Indian curry, they are the best.

sugarbum · 09/03/2020 14:17

waitrose and m&s. The portions are pretty small but they are full of flavour.

Morgan12 · 09/03/2020 14:21

Asda. Hands down. Tried them all.

The chicken bhuna in particular. The packaging says it feeds two. It does not.

Their naan is also amazing.

Farm foods or Iceland have good fakeaway range

APurpleSquirrel · 09/03/2020 14:37

Another votes for the Spice Tailor - we like the Butter Chicken and Punjabi Tomato Curry - just add meat/fish/tofu and veg, and cook some rice. Naan-wise, Waitrose or M&S from the chiller section.

ItsHAVEnotOF · 09/03/2020 14:41

Cook! They’re easily the best. Sell them in my local farm shop and there’s 2 Cook shops in the nearest two towns to me so I buy their stuff a lot. Never buy supermarket ones now as they don’t compare.

ritzbiscuits · 09/03/2020 14:41

I'm very lucky as my DH is obsessed with curries and makes various ones from scratch.

But, when we can't be bothered our first port of call is M&S. We think they're curries are fragrant, have nice spices added to them like curry leaves, cardamon pods, cloves etc. I particularly like the chicken madras, prawn bhuna, chicken saag.

I also make an 'easy' chicken curry using Pataks curry paste, with chicken, onions, and sometimes add fresh spinach. That's pretty good for a quick fix.

Bunnylady54 · 09/03/2020 14:42

We like Asda & they often have offers on, where the curries are only £2.50. They say to serve 2 but it’s more like a very generous serving for one. The bhajis (sp) are pretty good too & you can get pickle trays, poppadoms etc

PickAChew · 09/03/2020 14:43

I'm a little bit addicted to curry from scratch. Yet to decide what's on this week's menu but I have chicken thighs, butternut Squash and a cauliflower to work with, and this tidy pile to peruse.

quirrels · 09/03/2020 14:45

Ive tried them all. I don't eat chicken. M&S are mainly chicken. Very few do beef.
Best by far is Tesco finest beef madras. Can't comment on any chicken ones.

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 09/03/2020 14:46

Sainsbury’s. Above m and s and Waitrose imo

Amichelle84 · 09/03/2020 14:47

I love M&S curries, prefer them to a takeaway any day.

Grumpbum123 · 09/03/2020 14:49

M&S chicken pili pili is the nicest

Eve · 09/03/2020 14:50

Goldfish curry sauce concentrate, which I buy from Amazon.

Was recommended on here and it’s the same curry as from the Chinese.

EssentialHummus · 09/03/2020 14:52

Iceland by far! I don’t normally shop there but if I’m having a ready meal curry it has to be from there.
