My bridesmaid dress doesn't fit!

hidinginthenightgarden · 05/03/2020 19:02

I am a bridesmaid 2 weeks today. Tried the dress on 2 weeks ago and it wouldn't zip up. Tried again today and no better.
There are 6 bridesmaids so I can't go out and buy another. We have had them since August so months ago and no chance of ordering in time plus I can't afford.
Not sure if slimming is going to work. The zip is under the arm.
What are my other options? Try and fashion a lace tie up and hope no one notices?

Replace all meals with Lighterlife (Superdrug) or Slimfast you will be starving but it will work.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 05/03/2020 23:13

Some really irresponsible advice on this thread.

Sorry OP, but if you knew you needed to get the finger out and lose a few pounds two weeks ago and didn’t do anything about it, I’m guessing a last ditch crash diet will need more commitment than you’re ready to give.

In all likelihood here there’s a bride to be, up to her eyes in wedding planning and if she’s any friend at all, she doesn’t deserve the potential of getting a text of the morning of her wedding saying “Oops! Cutting out Diet Coke didn’t work and my dress doesn’t fit!”

Don’t be a knobhead, speak to a professional seamstress.

TheCraicDealer · 05/03/2020 23:28

Why not just go to a seamstress and at least see how much it would be to sort? I'd rather have the certainty of having a dress that definitely fits over chancing that a diet will work. As a bride I would rather a discrete panel or ribbon back than drama and stress the day before when it still didn't fit.

As an aside this is why fittings are normally done as close to the wedding as possible.

Ketogenic diet. I guarantee you will loose half a stone. It's not very difficult and you never need to starve.

Theowbh · 05/03/2020 23:58

@YesThatsATurdOnTheRug does he have an active job? How come he isn’t absolutely starving?!

alphajuliet123 · 05/03/2020 23:59

I think it would be really motivating for you to keep this thread updated with your progress!

(and for me, too... I've got a few weeks longer than you have but am struggling to get my arse in to gear and stop shovelling biscuits down my neck)

springydaff · 06/03/2020 02:19

Crash dieting could make you ill, I wouldn't risk it.

Talk to the dressmaker.

Ninkanink · 06/03/2020 09:24

Keto diets are not ‘crash diets’. Keto egg fasts are nutritious and perfectly safe to do for 3-5 days. You will not be hungry and you will not get ill.

I have a child with type 1 diabetes and I myself have type 2 diabetes (not due to weight related issues before anyone infers that I have food issues, I’m a healthy size 12). I am up to date with medical advice on low carbing and its importance in regulating blood glucose and aiding healthy weight loss and weight control. I have read a lot of books on the subject and have spoken with lots of consultants, and have benefitted from expert advice from very knowledgeable people. None of the advice that I have given is irresponsible.

Bluntness100 · 06/03/2020 09:28

Just add a panel, they can do it on both sides, to even it out, in a similar material to the bodice in the same colour. It’s not a big deal honest.

Ninkanink · 06/03/2020 09:30

But to be fair, it’s probably a lot easier to just have it altered!

springydaff · 06/03/2020 10:21

Agree it won't be difficult for a dressmaker to let it out/insert panels each side. (the only issue is ime clothes from China are stitched in like Fort knox - takes time to get in and alter..)

Ime nink any big change to my diet makes me ill, any suddenly different food plan. I wouldn't risk it if I were in op's shoes. Yy to doing things gradually but you only have 2 weeks op.

feelingverylazytoday · 06/03/2020 10:40

What a shame you didn't start 2 weeks ago, you could have easily gone down a dress size in a safe healthy manner in 4 weeks.
Eating around 1000 calories a day should be safe for 2 weeks, as long as you make sure all the food you eat is varied and of high nutritional value (so no junk food, no alcohol, etc). I would do some body toning exercise as well, personally I found swimming made the most difference to my body in a short amount of time, but a lot of people find it makes them very hungry.

Apolloanddaphne · 06/03/2020 10:48

I have no advice for you but just wanted to say the same happened to my niece but she was the bride! A seamstress managed to add panels to each side of her dress and she looked lovely.

mencken · 06/03/2020 11:03

jesus h christ. What an embarrassing thread.

get the damn frock altered, you are only wearing it for a few hours and you do not stuff up your health for that. I am also carrying a few extra pounds and controlled eating plus exercise is that way, not fuckwitted crash diets.

the cream instead of milk (10 times the calories) is a classic but it only just pips the sugar shakes and disordered eating also mentioned.

MirkwoodMiss · 06/03/2020 11:41

You can lose the 6lb in a fortnight- but it will take dedication! I'd get a good corset!

amusedbush · 06/03/2020 12:25

I think at this stage you either need a VLCD like Exante, or you need to sack off all carbs. Meat, green veg, good fats, and plenty of water.

I lost 15lbs in two weeks on Exante - it's tough but it really works. In total I lost three stone over ten weeks.

Krong · 06/03/2020 12:53
  1. Really good shapewear
  2. More water (but not 2-3 days before... dehydration makes you look skinnier hence why you always look better in the morning before eating!)
  3. No sugar
  4. No alcohol
  5. No carbs
  6. HIIT workouts
MrsJBaptiste · 06/03/2020 13:28

Look, crash diets aren't good for you, we all know that. However needs must here and so I'm sure that two weeks of eating badly (or not eating as the case may be) won't be too bad. If you put the weight back on afterwards then that's not great but the wedding will be over and it won't matter about the damn dress then!

For what it's worth, when I started low carbing the weight fell off and I wasn't sticking to 20g a day, more like 50-60g as I didn't limit fruit and (the wrong kind of) veg. Good luck ! 🤞

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 06/03/2020 13:48

Ooh, good luck @hidinginthenightgarden, it can be done. I recommend the blood sugar diet, I lost 3kgs in 6 days. It was horrible at first (probably because I wasn't drinking enough water) but it definitely works if you follow properly. I might just join you after the weekend, could do with losing a few pounds again now.

DropYourSword · 06/03/2020 13:55

Between 2 weeks ago when you tried it on, and today when you tried it on again and it still didn’t fit, were you doing anything specific to try and lose weight / tone up etc.

I think it’s really unrealistic and putting far too much pressure on yourself to crash diet down into this dress. Much better to get it altered however you can.

springydaff · 06/03/2020 17:21

^^You absolute dog, you, if you didn't do anything in the last 2 weeks, op. Hang your head in shame xx

hidinginthenightgarden · 06/03/2020 17:41

Yes I have spent the last 2 weeks eating no more than 1200 calories a day as I said a few pages ago.
My trousers are definitley loose compared to what they were so I know its working and I put the dress on again today and with a good tug the zip does go up to the top but pinches a little when pulling back down.
I'm not going to do anything stupid. I have had a headache most of this week. I am going to do as I have been doing and stick to 3 small (low carb) meals with lots of water and no snacks.

I had the same problem, although I swear the seamstress took my dress in more than agreed. Discovered I couldn't do it up the day before the wedding. Luckily I managed to swap with another bridesmaid, the poor woman could only just fit in it with some back fat on display. Her one fit me fine!

Ninkanink · 06/03/2020 18:22

It sounds like you’re well on the way to success, then.

If you’re not already doing LCHF then I would suggest doing that as it will help you to burn even more fat, it’s also simpler because there’s no need to calorie count. If you want a guideline to a really good, clear way of doing it look at BIWI’s Low carb bootcamps here on MN in the lowcarbing section. The rules are so easy to follow and you will definitely see results. Also be aware that the 3rd week of lowcarbing often sees a stall where no weight is lost. Don’t despair as if you continue with it you will soon see a ‘whoosh’ (where the body lets go of fat stores all in one go) and lose several lbs in one go.

Ninkanink · 06/03/2020 18:24

The headache is ‘carb flu’ - a cup of bouillon or bovril will help a lot (because you drink a lot of water your electrolytes need balancing).

Make sure you’re eating plenty of healthy fats (butter, olive oil, coconut oil, oily foods like avocado).
