Did you have a honeymoon? Where did you go?

Planning our honeymoon and have decided we’ll be happy with a couple of nights hotel stay somewhere here in the UK. (Mostly due to money as even this will be a stretch.)

But I wondered if that was unusual and whether most people went abroad?

Did you have a honeymoon and if so what did you do?

Thailand, then Glastobury.

Flew to Denver then had a 4 week round trip taking in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. We're divorced now though 😄

Straight after we got married we went to Dorset for the weekend. Then went to Ecuador for 3 weeks a couple of months later. We didn't have a wedding so that we could afford a nice honeymoon Smile

We went to a luxury boutique hotel in Loch Ness. Had both lavish dinners and fish & chips by the loch - before a boat trip to look for Nessie! Some beautiful scenic walks too. It was lovely and tranquil, just perfect for us!

Cornwall in a yurt with our beloved dog. We had a wind up radio, wood burning stove and went out to a new place every day in the car and then home to drink, chat and listen to random
Radio stations. Wonderful memory

The ice hotel in Sweden. It was fab.

But as lots of others are saying, holidays are not about the location but about the people and frame of mind. Some of our best family holidays have been in a residential caravan on the Northumbrian coast.

The Maldives. Clichéd but I can't imagine ever going again.

YgritteSnow · 01/03/2020 23:45

Bahamas. Divorced now though.

Paris in one of the hottest summers on record Confused

I didn't really want to do the cliche honeymoon destination, like Paris, Rome or Venice, but we both thought, well where do we love? And both agreed on Paris.

Only for 3 nights. It was lovely, but honestly the weather took the edge off the enjoyment a bit for me. The air was so thick, it felt like you weren't getting enough!

We've been again since and enjoyed it more that time. I think it rained every day and was a little chilly. Soooo much nicer Smile

I've been married twice. I went to the Seychelles for two weeks for my first honeymoon, just because I had decided aged about 12 that I would be going there on my honeymoon, whoever I married! It did live up to my expectations and was beautiful.

For my second honeymoon, we had two very young children so we had an all inclusive week at a Mark Warner resort in Greece (chosen for its very good childcare facilities so we could have some time alone together!).

Oman, had a lovely time relaxing.

motortroll · 02/03/2020 00:17

Got married in feb, flew to Iceland the next day! Beautiful in the winter but freezing obvs!!

motortroll · 02/03/2020 00:18

Also that was 2005, much more touristy now I wouldn't enjoy it as a honeymoon these days.

US road trip in a Mustang convertible. Loved it.

3 months in Canada getting to know dh's extended Canadian family. 10 weeks in the Caribbean including 3 weeks island hopping in the Bahamas and then five months in Mexico.

It was amazing. We were young, slightly irresponsible, madly in love (although I nearly left him in Xalapa) and very lucky to be able to take that long/spend that much money.

We're still together.

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 02/03/2020 00:57

@LuluJakey1 we honeymooned in Charante too but we only had a week! A friend lent us her house in a little village. We had a lovely time looking round all the cognac-making establishments.

Must have been a sign because we live in France now - over on the other side though!

ShowOfHands · 02/03/2020 07:21

OP, I'm a bit more like you than some of these replies! We went youth hostelling in Scotland. We had no money, didn't drive and couldn't afford passports or luxury. 20 years later, we're still married, I still can't afford a passport but I can drive!

ilovebagpuss · 02/03/2020 07:23

Grenada for 2 weeks it was amazing and I knew we would never do it at a later date so we put it on a loan and paid it off over 2 years.

StCharlotte · 02/03/2020 08:14

A week in Barcelona 21 years ago. We had to buy a phrasebook because hardly anyone spoke English there back then. Had a day on the beach, a day out to Sitges, a day out to Montserrat and the rest of the time just mooching about the city walking everywhere and, er, honeymooning Wink It was perfect.

happypotamus · 02/03/2020 10:01

We went to New Zealand. We knew we would never be able to justify spending so much on a holiday again, and it was amazing. We don't like beach holidays, so, whilst not very relaxing, it was right for us. We travelled round and saw as much of the country as we could in 2 weeks (I couldn't get any longer off work). We almost moved to live there afterwards.

FruityWidow · 02/03/2020 10:05

Off grid cottage in Snowdonia for a weekend.

MrsCharlesBrandon · 02/03/2020 10:09

Loire Valley in France.

2 weeks in a Gite in a tiny hamlet. Bliss.

caperplips · 02/03/2020 10:20

3 week fly drive USA road trip including New York, San Francisco, LA and the coastal Highway 1 - it was FANTASTIC and we loved every minute of it
