I'm in Liverpool.

I have lived all over and you can only get Sui Mais here (that I have for nd anyway.)No one else outside of Liverpool seems to have heard of them.

They are pork and prawn dumplings but bigger and better and not won tons.

Recently went to Cardiff and I had a corned beef and mash thing from the chippy that was a welsh thing. It definitely began with R but it was regional to that area I think. It was fabulous.

What do you have that you don't see anywhere else?

Scouse is just normal stew as served anywhere in the country. I've never had anyone explain to me what is different about it in Liverpool, apart from the name.

I'm convinced a parmo used to be made of pork, 30-odd years ago. And I reckon Morrissey's 'Every Day is Like Sunday' was set in Redcar. Lemon tops are nuclear yellow!

Squigean · 29/02/2020 09:41

Coddle.

Mrsjayy · 29/02/2020 09:43

Where I grew up (Lancashire) we used to have potato pie on bonfire night with beetroot on the side. They don't seem to do that elsewhere that I've seen.

Marmelised · 29/02/2020 10:06

Butteries/rowies- also known as rollies further north. Food of the gods.

InvisibleToEveryone · 29/02/2020 10:51

Wineislifex · 29/02/2020 11:30

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 29/02/2020 11:41

Pease pudding:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pease_pudding

It's also very good in a ham sandwich.

Mrsjayy · 29/02/2020 12:11

Pease pudding sounds nice. I need to tryit.

FoggyNelson · 29/02/2020 12:20

You can get siu mai in EVERY dim sum place! If you can't, then run a mile - it's not a real dim sum place Grin

You can also get them in waitrose if anyone's looking for a quick siu mai fix.

EssentialHummus · 29/02/2020 12:27

Just confirming that there are siu mai in London Grin - but thank you for starting the thread op, these all sound yummy!

I’m originally from South Africa. Favourite local things are biltong (most of the ones in the UK aren’t up to scratch) and something called “bunny chow”, which comprises a loaf of bread cut in half vertically, the insides hollowed out and then filled with hot curry. Tastiest thing ever, I really miss it.

stoplickingthetelly · 29/02/2020 14:34

Yuk sung from Chinese takeaways/restaurants is only available in the midlands. It’s a sort of minced pork mixture that you wrap up in a lettuce leaf. I absolutely love it, but can’t get it where I am now.

elQuintoConyo · 29/02/2020 14:51

Small biscuits called nuns farts

caz123456 · 29/02/2020 16:42

Rag puddings which I love and black peas with vinegar on bonfire night

KittenVsBox · 29/02/2020 17:01

Yuk Sung widely available too - well, given I've had it here, and in Hong Kong, I doubt it's a Midlands recipie!
