Are you a motorway middle lane moocher?

I hate you. All of you.

I didn't get the chance to tell you on my 5 hour journey today but I hate you.

I like the left lane and try to stick there but will occasionally move over if someone's going under 60 or there's a slip road coming up.

BreathlessCommotion · 29/02/2020 08:03

@fuzzymoon I can tell you the Police would disagree with you. Doing 70 in the middle lane when not overtaking is dangerous. You should drive correctly and move over.

Teateaandmoretea · 29/02/2020 08:21

To the people moaning about the undertaking....if someone has enough room to undertake you then you should be in the left hand lane!!!! So many terrible drivers, I despair!!

No, because usually it's some dick weaving in and out of people stuck behind other people who are going slower than they want to too. Most commonly it's because of too much traffic on the road rather than middle lane hogging per se.

I dislike aggressive twats who drive dangerously far more than people in the middle lane. And what about outside lane hogging/ sitting behind a queue of traffic there rather than just accepting you will have to drive slower and moving over?

I move over when I can (I have to drive on busy motorway regularly). But then often you get stuck because you catch up someone going slower and you have someone doing the same speed as you on your right. Or you catch up a lorry overtaking a lorry and you have to move round two lanes across traffic to overtake.

Teateaandmoretea · 29/02/2020 08:23

UK motorways do not have a “slow lane” and they do not have a “fast lane”.

Congratulations on your pedantry certificate Hmm

LoonyLunaLoo · 29/02/2020 08:29

Someone near me hates middle lane drivers so much they’ve spray painted “why be a middle lane moron?” on the motorway bridges on both sides 😂

This made my day 😂 it needs to be rolled out across the country!

It's not ok to hog the middle lane if you are driving significantly under 70 but if you're driving at just about 70 you're actually not hogging any lane as that's the speed limit

No, if there is nothing in the left lane, you're middle lane hogging! Driving at any speed, in any of the further right lanes when theres nothing on your left is motorway twattery. Sorry 🤷🏽‍♀️

or do the dramatic overtake on the right and sweep over to the first lane movement to cars. Those are the idiots

If someone does this to you, you're middle lane hogging 🤦🏽‍♀️

LolaSmiles · 29/02/2020 13:22

You should be driving as far left as possible for the conditions and other traffic.
You could drive at 34mph in the middle lane if you were passing slower traffic to your left, but shouldn't be driving at 70mph in the middle lane if the left pane us clear.

Argh. The left lane is NOT the slow lane.

BobbyBlueCat · 29/02/2020 13:25

@fuzzymoon you're completely and utterly wrong and you really need to read up on the new offence that was brought in to make exactly what you're doing illegal.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 29/02/2020 13:58

I had a classic example last night. I joined an almost empty M40 behind another car. The only other vehicles on the motorway were at least half a mile ahead of us. The car in front joined at around 55mph so, shortly after joining, I signalled and moved to lane 2 and overtook.

As I returned to lane 1, the car, now behind me, was moving out to lane 2, for absolutely no reason.

I left it behind but could see it in my mirror still merrily sitting there, even as faster traffic began to approach it in lane 1 and have to move all the way around it.

Knobhead.

ShriekingBansheela · 29/02/2020 14:10

My real hatred is reserved for lorry drivers who choose an uphill stretch of a 2 lane motorway to overtake a lorry travelling at 58mph at 59mph.
And as soon as the first overtaking lorry eventually tucks itself in in front the next lorry behind 58mph lorry pulls out and conducts another 10 min overtaking manoeuvre at 59mph, and then, the next.

StarlightLady · 29/02/2020 14:51

@Teateaandmoretea - There have been several in orrect references on here to the fast and slow lanes. Thinking the kanes incorrectly leads to driving incorrectly, even dangerously.

I have the dubious pleasure of driving fairly regularly between the UK and Marseilles and come across a lot of idiots on the road along the way, both here and in France. This includes those men who are out to cut up a female driver as some sort of sport. If people were more pedantry with there driving skills and did not merely consider the outside lane as the “fast lane” we would all be safer.

StarlightLady · 29/02/2020 14:52

Correction: not orrect but incorrect. Fortunately my driving is better than my typing.

Reginabambina · 29/02/2020 14:55

@IceWings it causes accidents when people are forced to navigate around you/break and slow down to find a gap etc. If you can’t cope with people coming on to the motorway just don’t drive on the motorway.

bumblingbovine49 · 29/02/2020 14:55

No I am not but DH is (well sometimes anyway)

MrsCasares · 29/02/2020 14:57

My fiat 500 is fitted with Exocet missiles to combat middle lane hoggers (if only).

Teateaandmoretea · 29/02/2020 15:05

@starlight I see it as purely a figure of speech.

KatherineJaneway · 29/02/2020 15:07

M4 is full of them, doing 60 to 65 in the middle lane, inside lane is completely empty.

peaceanddove · 29/02/2020 15:20

If you stick in the middle lane because you're nervous of cars or lorries pulling on from the slip roads then you shouldn't be driving on any motorway, or on any road for that matter.

Tfoot75 · 29/02/2020 15:24

When I pass people on an empty 3 lane motorway, I'm in the left lane and you're in the middle lane going significantly slower than me, I really have no choice but to do the dramatic 3 lane swerve and back to overtake you, as undertaking is technically illegal and potentially dangerous if you ever happened to actually move into the correct lane without seeing me coming up to your left. This is a particular problem on the toll motorway near me, as very few lorries use it, but an awful lot of 'middle lane morons' do! Find it quite hard to believe that people are scared about changing lanes on an empty motorway, so why do it? Approx half of drivers pull over after I've done the 3 lane swerve Grin

Chociefish · 29/02/2020 15:54

Think you're talking about my ex op. He was a middle lane moocher that used to speed up if anyone started to overtake. 8 can honestly say his driving was scary as hell!!
What you need is a large BMW😂

SirChable · 29/02/2020 16:43

Everything @picklebarrelfalls says, but without the “sorry”.

(I teach Advanced Driving).

madcatladyforever · 29/02/2020 16:44

I absolutely want to run them over with a Sherman tank.

billysboy · 29/02/2020 16:48

most of the middle lane owners club are completely unaware

Fizzypoo · 29/02/2020 16:56

Many years ago when I did my test, my driving instructor told me it's not illegal to undertake if you are going the speed limit.
