What could possibly go wrong with my birthday present

DH has a long and noble history not not quite getting the thing that he has been asked to get. Even if you write it down what comes back is broadly similar but often not usable. For instance, DS and I get itchy from most washing powders/liquids, there are a couple of specific brands that are fine, DH offered to buy some as he was at the shop anyway but came back with the 2-in-1 version of the correct brand, which we can't use. Or when tinned tuna steak in brine is written on the shopping list with come back with tuna chunks in brine or tuna steak in oil. Nothing terrible, but just a bit wasteful as it sits in the cupboard until it goes out of date.

Anyway, it's my birthday this week and I have been considering buying myself a portable DVD player as I have a lot of box set DVDs that I love but no means of playing them anymore since the old Xbox died and the new one is digital only. DH is going to buy one for my birthday. What will I end up with? A home cinema system perhaps? A CD player (do they even exist anymore)?

Correct answer wins something close to a thing that they need, but not quite. Wink

A tool to convert your DVDs to another format.
A case to store DVDs.

SpeedofaSloth · 24/02/2020 22:16

This is what we call the "cabbage and novelty bra" effect in our house. It's when you go out for something specific then get distracted and pick up something which isn't that at all, mystifying your OH as to what on earth you were thinking.
Anyway, put me down for one of those karaoke machines which take CDs.

theclockticksslowly · 24/02/2020 22:17

An external cd/dvd drive that plugs into a computer.

yatapina · 24/02/2020 22:18

A laptop.

Preferrably one without a disc tray!

yatapina · 24/02/2020 22:19

*Preferably

Tinty · 24/02/2020 22:20

A laptop, but one without a disc player slot Grin.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 24/02/2020 22:20

A Bluetooth device for storing all your dvds on with no way of transferring them to it.

Tinty · 24/02/2020 22:21

Great minds yatapina Smile

ragged · 24/02/2020 22:22

an ipod?

underneaththeash · 24/02/2020 22:22

My DH is the same.....I don't bother asking him to get specific stuff from the shop anymore.

He'll probably get a DVD player, but a non-portable one.

SavoyCabbage · 24/02/2020 22:24

Put me down for a billion pounds on a new xbox.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/02/2020 22:52

I probably should have started this thread later in the week as my birthday isn't until Thursday, hopefully you can all bear the anticipation. Grin

In case you were wondering, I buy my Christmas present myself and tell him what he's giving me. Grin

OP you have to tell us what he gets you.

One year my DP got me a book and a CD that I wanted for my birthday. I was very pleased they were exactly the right ones. Really happy with my presents and the fact he had got it right for once.

Then for Christmas 5 months later - what did he get me - the same book and CD! Grin. His answer, when I pointed out that he’d got the same things as he’d got me for my birthday, “but Tinty you really liked them, you were really happy with your presents.” Confused

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/02/2020 23:09

Grin Tinty, that's so funny. Like they were chocolates or something that you finish and need again.

My birthday is in November. DM gave me a cheese club subscription. Because I enjoyed it so much, DH gave me another one for Christmas. I am now inundated with cheese!

BaronessBomburst · 24/02/2020 23:20

Shamelessly place-marking........

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/02/2020 23:50

Is there such a thing as too much cheese BikeRunSki?

Happy birthday!! Sooooo what did he buy you?

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 27/02/2020 15:00

I imagine the Aisle of Shite in Lidl must blow his mind Grin

DianeNguyen · 27/02/2020 15:01

Ooh I am a bit late to this, but put me down for a new box set. Happy birthday!

poorbuthappy · 27/02/2020 15:02

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar
Happy birthday and what did you get???

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 27/02/2020 15:13

Well, he WhatsApped me to say he'd reserved a DVD player and had I already ordered one for myself. I said that I hadn't ordered one.

Four hours later he WhatsApped again to ask if I'd ordered one because he was about to go and pick up the one that he'd reserved. (I suppose it's possible that I could have ordered one since he last asked, it's also possible that he forgot or didn't read my previous reply. Grin )

He's not usually home until around 6.30 or 7pm, so you'll just have to wait and see what turns up.

Thank you for the birthday wishes.

TwoHeaded DH is the only person that I know that goes to Lidl or Aldi and always comes home with just groceries. If that doesn't clearly define him as a bit weird, then I don't know what would. Grin

Happy Birthday to you!
And good luck...GrinCakeWine

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 27/02/2020 19:47

I got a portable DVD player. Yay! Surprise, surprise it's almost, but not quite, what I wanted. Grin The thing is I didn't specify screen size because I didn't know that there were DVD players with such small screens. The screen is smaller than an iPhone plus. Apparently there's no point in returning it because it's the only one they had in the shop. I'll use it for a bit but it seems to me like the kind of thing that would accidentally get broken quite easily. Wink

Happy birthday! At least he's reliable Grin
