I'm being nosey really, but thought a thread might be useful for anyone looking for inspiration too :)

Dd2 is going to be either Prof. McGonnagal or Hedwig (decision yet to be made). I made Prof. McGonnagal a couple of years ago for dd1 so we'll recycle that; or I'll magic an old white sheet, couple of cheap feather boas, and some craft foam, into Hedwig.

I've no idea who I might be yet. It needs to be someone relatively easy as I'll be working one job, then dressing up for my second, and possibly need to change back into me for an hour at my friend's shop. Any ideas for me would be greatfully received!

What are your dc (or you!) dressing up as?

And please DON'T piss on my parade, if you don't like/agree/whatever with it then fine, click along to the next thread. I quite enjoy cobbling together costumes with dd2 and dressing up days at work (school).

DS wants to be Toothless (Im trying to convince him to be Where's Wally as that is both easier and cheaper).

Im trying to get DD to be Princess Pearl from Zog as she loves both the book and her toy medical set but she is set on being the ladybird from What the Ladybird Heard.

A few years ago DS went as Charlie Cook which was super easy.

ItchySeveredFoot · 24/02/2020 19:39

My 5yo dd is going as "Not Elsa!" cos I'm a mean mum. She loves books and has all sorts of stories so you think there would be someone! Last year she was Blueberry Girl by Neil Gaiman which is really just all girls. Blue dress and a flowery headdress.

TeenPlusTwenties · 24/02/2020 19:39

Past that now, but at primary we did:

Milly Molly Mandy - adult size white shirt so long enough for a dress, and stuck red ribbons on to make the stripes

Arriety from The Borrowers - made a giant paperclip from a wire coathanger, and a giant match and giant postage stamp, otherwise normal clothes.

Stitchhead (author Guy Bass) - black and red top (bough as a Dennis the Menace one) and striped tights over black leggings, plus face paint.

Hermione - long black shirt dress as a cloak with stuck on school crest and a stick as a magic wand. Sister's school tie happened to be right colours.

Main rule in our house was the character generally had to be from a book DD enjoyed.

I'm definitely after a character from a book she has. Last year I tried to get her to go as Little Red Reading Hood. She loves the story and it's about a love of books! She wasn't having it.

TrippingOnSunshine · 24/02/2020 20:04

My dd is going to be Coraline!

Glitterskull · 24/02/2020 20:09

DS is going as Skull Duggery Pleasant, his choice. He has a suit already, just ordered a black fedora from Amazon and my 17 year old dd has offered to do face paint. I'm feeling quite smug because I'm actually organised and not chasing round the night before trying to figure something out!

TossACoinToYourWitcher · 24/02/2020 20:13

DD has just turned 4 and is determined to be a dinosaur. Thankfully she does have some dinosaur books so we're sort of covered there.

DS is going as Frodo.

BrollyMo · 24/02/2020 20:16

Dd went as Mildred from The Worst Witch last year - so easy to make with a black school dress from Asda, homemade Cackle's Academy badge and a ribbon belt.

MiniMileyMoo · 24/02/2020 20:18

My DS is going to be a dog from 'the great bottom dog swap' 🤣. Last year he was the Koala from 'The koala that could' (school trousers, grey t-shirt, headband with grey ears and some grey face paint) and once before was Mr Bump (blue clothes and bandages!). Littlest DS wants to be Peppa pig so I've got him a pig hat and he can wear red trousers and tshirt 😬

DarkHumour · 24/02/2020 20:20

DS is going as Harry O Hay from The Scarecrow’s Wedding. £1 easter straw hat bought and the rest we can recycle from old clothes.

iusedtohavechickens · 24/02/2020 20:23

My daughter three years running. Ann Darrow from king king, Dorothy and the girl from how to train your dragon! ❤️

iklboo · 24/02/2020 20:27

Thankfully past that but DS was

Charlie Bucket
Harry & his bucketful of dinosaurs
Omar The Strongman
Percy Jackson
Dracula
Young James Bond

StandardLampski · 24/02/2020 20:28

And my daughter will hopefully be betty o barley Grin

Wedding dress... dad's white tee shirt I cam make into a dress. I was going to cut out white feathers from felt but might punch the feather boa idea ! We have a straw hat, pink fake flowers and somewhere some shells from the beach I can make Into necklace...

DelurkingAJ · 24/02/2020 20:32

DS1 (previously George from George’s Marvellous Medicine and Captain Underpants (I made him wear trousers under the pants!)) is going as the Enormous Crocodile thanks to a crocodile onesie he got for Xmas. I’ve spent £2 on a second hand copy as he only has it in a hardback anthology and we’re done!

DartmoorDoughnut · 24/02/2020 20:32

Trying to persuade eldest (5) to be something easy but his current favourite book is Oi Dog so I’m trying to figure out how to turn him into a dog don’t think youngest has to partake yet as he’s only 3 but he can always stick his tiger costume on as they both like the tiger who came to tea

heidipi · 24/02/2020 20:40

It's too early to relax but looking good here as DD1 wants to go as Pippi Longstocking (plaits, thrown together clothes, monkey on shoulder, bag of coins) and DD2 wants to go as a Dog Zombie from one of the Tom Gates books (she's going to decorate a t-shirt with the band name on in TG style doodles).

What are the changes they change their minds 2 days before?

BarkandCheese · 24/02/2020 20:42

We’ve done -

YR - Cosette from Les Mis. DD’s not some kind of genius, nor are we hugely pretentious, she’d previously entered a couple of talent contests singing Castle on a Cloud so had a Cosette costume ready to go.

Y1 - the school didn’t do book day

Y2 - The Demon Headmaster. Black jacket, black trousers, shirt, tie and sunglasses.

Y3- Stitchhead. Stripy jumper, shorts over leggings and face paint.

Y4- A random character from a book no one had ever heard of DD insisted she wanted to be. Basically a Victorian governess costume.

Y5- Lyra from His Dark Materials. Woolly jumper, snow boots, woolly hat, cuddly toy Safety pinned to her jumper for Pantalaimon and compass made from a Camembert box with string threaded through it so she could wear it.

Y6- Annabeth from Percy Jackson. Very easy costume, just a “camp half blood” T-shirt I bought for a fiver from Amazon with regular clothes. Probably the most cost effective costume as DD still regularly wears the T-shirt.

Y7- DD’s secondary does book week for the y7s, so as it’s the final year we’re going all out. She’s going to be both Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde with a costume, hair and makeup split down the middle to achieve this.

BrollyMo · 24/02/2020 20:51

Ooh great Heidi! Dd1 was pippi longstocking a few years ago and I loved that outfit! Trying to persuade dd2 to wear it this year, but she isn't keen 🙄

Cinderellasma · 24/02/2020 20:55

Big fans of The Worst Witch and Roald Dahl in this house so usually have a Mildred, and maybe a Fox or Giant.

heidipi · 24/02/2020 21:00

Thinking back over previous years there has been a running spooky theme as I shamelessly recycle Halloween costumes:
Room on the Broom and Worst Witch (DD1 in the same witch costume two years running nursery and then reception)
Bony Tony from the Creepy Castle books (DD2 in her skeleton costume)
Last year I splashed out on a Mary Poppins costume from Sainsbo though Grin

APurpleSquirrel · 24/02/2020 21:01

DD's first World Book Day & school have decided on a Superhero theme so DD is going as Wonder Woman.

happymummy12345 · 24/02/2020 21:04

I'm so glad someone done this thread as we have no idea at all. Ds is 4 and a half and goes to a private day nursery (if that's relevant).
He loves Spider-Man but the costumes go age 3-4 then jump to age 5-6. Plus £16 on a costume he will only wear for one morning is a lot for us in our current financial situation.
He has a Spider-Man hooded jacket and a Spider-Man t shirt and also socks, so I could send him in those with a pair of light blue jeans, as it's still the character. But wondered if that will look like we couldn't be bothered?
Other books he likes are Thomas the tank engine, but no idea how that would work?
Any other suggestions will be appreciated as dh and I have no idea at all.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 24/02/2020 21:07

Our first year, as DD is now in reception. We've been given an extremely short list of books we have to choose a character from, basically books they've read in class.

I think I've persuaded her to Princess Pearl - she seemed quite excited by the idea.

stophuggingme · 24/02/2020 21:08

My e,rest son is going as Hero Boy from the Polar Express.
Pyjamas, a dressing gown, slippers, his ticket and sleigh bell from Christmas ( courtesy of eBay) and a empty cup painted brown inside for his hot hot hot hot chocolate!
Complete with the book and a miniature Polar Express Train.

His idea
