World Book Day costume ideas thread

I'm being nosey really, but thought a thread might be useful for anyone looking for inspiration too :)

Dd2 is going to be either Prof. McGonnagal or Hedwig (decision yet to be made). I made Prof. McGonnagal a couple of years ago for dd1 so we'll recycle that; or I'll magic an old white sheet, couple of cheap feather boas, and some craft foam, into Hedwig.

I've no idea who I might be yet. It needs to be someone relatively easy as I'll be working one job, then dressing up for my second, and possibly need to change back into me for an hour at my friend's shop. Any ideas for me would be greatfully received!

What are your dc (or you!) dressing up as?

And please DON'T piss on my parade, if you don't like/agree/whatever with it then fine, click along to the next thread. I quite enjoy cobbling together costumes with dd2 and dressing up days at work (school).

Last year ds1 went as a box of crayons from "the day the crayons quit" And ds2 went as the gruffalos child.

No idea this year. 🤔

heidipi · 24/02/2020 21:12

Happy your Spiderman outfit sounds great - anything goes, especially at nursery, and some children won't want to dress up at all anyway. DD2 once went to nursery as Iggle Piggle wearing blue top and trousers with a red cardboard cut out shape on her head and it was fine.
I don't mind buying costumes now and again (I'm going to sell the Mary Poppins one on Ebay I think though) but homemade is definitely preferable.

Ds is 11 (year 6). He really doesn’t want to do it this year (feels too old), but they have no choice. He will only consider being Dr Who 😩 I’m thinking shirt, bow tie, waistcoat and blazer, and will buy a cheap sonic screwdriver from Amazon.

Dd is desperate to go as Luna Lovegood. We’ll be charity shopping this weekend for some random bits.
Last year she was Goth Girl.

Hoik · 24/02/2020 21:19

@Happymummy12345 send him in the spidey clothes. It's one day, there is no sense spending more than is necessary.

@glitterskull your DS has good taste! My 10yo loves Skullduggary. He met Derek Landy a couple of years ago and said it was his best day ever.

10yo despises fancy dress and his school is having an enforced Harry Potter theme this year. He's going in non-uniform/normal clothes and will he "Harry Potter in half term".

5yo is going as the same thing as he also hates fancy dress.

8yo is going as either Elsa because she's reading the Frozen-themed Twisted Tale book at the moment or a cat.

HighNetGirth · 24/02/2020 21:21

One year, both DS and DD went as ‘authors’ wearing their own clothes and carrying a pen!. It was their own idea.

happymummy12345 · 24/02/2020 21:29

@heidipi thank you for your comment. I don't mean this in a bad or judgemental way at all but in my sons nursery more children don't really dress up than do.
The 1st time he went as chase from paw patrol. The 2nd time he loved a book about a stripy jumper so we got him a stripy jumper and he wore that with jeans.
Due to personal circumstances right now I'm struggling to justify buying a costume that he will need clothes underneath anyway, when he has Spider-Man clothes already that he can wear.
Think we will just go with that. Thanks again for making me feel better Smile

HathorX · 24/02/2020 21:43

DD is going as Podkin One Ear as she absolutely loves the books. A fairly easy costume , which we are making. She loves dressing up and although she might not be a very convincing one-eared rabbit I know she will enjoy it.

Racheyg · 25/02/2020 08:23

My kids have decided....
ds1 the character from diary of a wimpy kid. So a stick man
Ds2 supertato

Thank god for eBay 😂

Nowayorhighway · 25/02/2020 08:25

One DD is going as Verruca Salt. She already has white tights, a pink frilly dress and faux fur coat so I bought her the rabbit crossbody bag and a golden ticket and wonka bar.

DS (10) is eternally fussy and wanted to go as a dinosaur from a non-fiction book on dinosaurs so he’s just wearing his dinosaur onesie Grin.

Other DD is going as the velveteen rabbit in her rabbit onesie.

Easy and cheap.

whitesoxx · 25/02/2020 08:55

@missyB1 I think it's awful to force an 11 year old into fancy dress. Surely should be optional.

Anyway, I'd send him as a muggle. Can where what he likes then Wink

CigarsofthePharoahs · 25/02/2020 09:04

The best one I did was Mr Tickle.
Two orange card ovals worn like a tabard then two lengths of orange ribbon with hands on the ends attached to sticks so they can be waved around. Drew a big smiley face on the front of the tabard.

TheFutureIs · 25/02/2020 09:55

@iusedtohavechickens I'm in awe of your skills!
I've chucked money at my Queen of Hearts costume this year, not enough time/inclination to make a costume. Thought I'd go as an evil character seeing as that's what some of the kids see me as (I'm really not, just happen to have standards!)
Little one will be either Peter Rabbit, the gruffalo or a lion depending on what she chooses in the morning

Clawdy · 25/02/2020 11:17

My friend's daughter was telling me the other day she wanted some thing really simple because she's so busy, and said she would probably send her seven year old son as The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas. When I looked horrified, she said "Is it too old for him? Haven't a clue what it's about!"

happymummy12345 · 25/02/2020 11:39

@Hoik thanks. I've decided that's what we're doing

MyEnormousTurnip · 26/02/2020 16:45

Any clever ideas for yr6 (girl) and yr8 (boy) who absolutely won’t go in fancy dress but have been told they can’t just go in non-uniform and say they’re Tom Gates or whatever Angry

TeenPlusTwenties · 26/02/2020 17:27

Turnip
Percy Jackson? Normal clothes plus props?
Tris from Divergent? Black clothes and fake tattoo done with eyeliner.
Anyone else they can get away with in normal clothes plus props.
