I want to read classic or important books

I would really like to start reading important books- not sure how much time I'm going to have to do it so think realistically I want to compile a list of 10 and aim to do them this year. I'd be happy to be honest if I manage at least five.

The only one I have on my list so far is War and Peace. I love literature yet feel like I don't know anything about significant books - would anyone like to nominate any titles?

Just wanted to check in to say I am still reading the thread and really enjoyed OMG the suggestions and debate.

I have started 1984 and am making my eta through it slowly - DD isn't allowing me to progress quite as quickly as I would like to! Once I've read a significant amount I'll update again for anyone who is reading along with me.

@soupforbrains If you're happy to read along then yes! How do you feel about target date of end of March to complete and discuss? Then if all goes well could aim to read a classic per month?

I too want to read more classic and important books, I've recently enjoyed The Moonstone and The Woman in White. Because of this thread I am now reading 1984 and have to say I am not enjoying it. I'm on page 314 so nearly finished, and I will finish it, but it's depressing and in parts very dull and hard work. I feel like the book is taking the place of the metaphorical boot stamping on my face, the points could have been made in far fewer words. I also am uncomfortable with the misogyny within it.

I dunno maybe dystopian fiction is not for me!
