To find the cotswolds really snooty?

What is it about the cotswolds that makes people really snotty?
Sure there are some lovely people there, but the more often I visit the more I realise how snotty it is.

Yes the architecture is pretty, but the landscapes are pretty unexciting.
I've come across normal people in pubs who have been very arrogant, self assured, and think they're better than other people. Openly looking down on the welsh, scots, french etc.

How are ordinary people so posh too? Dress up like it's the 1930s, or with a love for things like cath kidiston, wearing barbour, hunter jackets etc. Then you find out they live in a normal little 3 bed cottage and work as a teacher or something.

YANBU - I’ve found it snooty when I’ve been too! It’s one of those parts of the country that attracts poshos and wannabe poshos.

NotYourHolidayDick · 23/02/2020 21:18

I'm a total wannabe posho.

In fact I'm just an out and out chav, you obviously didn't find me Grin

Wauden · 23/02/2020 21:22

YABU, it can be like that, with many exceptions.

The house prices are too high.

Wauden · 23/02/2020 21:24

Oops, I meant YANBU. Grin

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 23/02/2020 21:29

Living here, id have to say its not snooty at all. My husband is a teacher and his comprehensive school has a higher % of kids on PP as the academy he taught at in Tottenham.

If youre talking about the little villages, then yes, they can be rather snooty, but places like Stroud, Tewkesbury, Cheltenham, Cirencester etc, not at all.

WatcherintheRye · 23/02/2020 21:30

You need to speak to Kerry and Kurtan, op! They're very down to earth and not at all snooty Grin

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 23/02/2020 21:34

It's a real life Giles cartoon, exacerbated by insane house prices. So it attracts nooves of the most unattractive stamp. Once those sort of people reach critical mass, you get influxes of media trash, trustafarians, arms dealers and other vermin.

MsTSwift · 23/02/2020 21:35

Just watched this country uncomfortable viewing if you were a teen living rurally 😁

Poetryinaction · 23/02/2020 21:51

The landscapes can be spectacular. The 5 valleys are breathtaking in parts.

Oldraver · 23/02/2020 21:53

The town I live in is conveniently just outside the Cotswolds AOOB as it's not a quaint Cotswoldy stone village but a military town. I would say yes it can be snooty. People here love to look down on our town and if we go to any village pub and asked where we're from you can see noses wrinkle. Still take our money though

FernFurze · 23/02/2020 21:57

I’ve walked part of the Cotswold Way and think some of the landscape is gorgeous. But you seem primarily outraged that people who live in 3-bed cottages and work as teachers wear Barbour and are xenophobic ‘arrogant’ — would this be more ok, in your view, if they were the Honourable Somebody Double-Barrelled, heir to a crumbling but picturesque Palladian house, a ha-ha, and many hundreds of acres of grazing?

RedRed9 · 23/02/2020 21:57

We visited there recently and 99% of people were so lovely and friendly.

One person seemed to be snooty (owner or manager of a little bookshop who seemed offish about the fact there were children in the shop despite it having a children’s section).

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 25/02/2020 01:07

I love the Cotswolds and visit every year and yes it is snooty and that’s one of the reasons I love it, I love a bit of posh!

katy1213 · 25/02/2020 01:16

Cath Kidston is plastic tat - and a Barbour is sensible wear for the country.
Sounds like you're the one with a chip on your shoulder.
God forbid that 'ordinary people' should be self-assured! What would you prefer - pulling their forelocks to the gentry?

HeronLanyon · 25/02/2020 01:24

Aren’t those brands you mentioned the epitome of striving competitive middle classes ? Unrelaxed due to constant brittle ‘show’ ?
I don’t know the cotswolds well at all but it sounds like places I’ve spent time in.

MistyIsland · 25/02/2020 07:38

I grew up in the Cotswold Grin and yes certain areas can be very snotty. North Cotswolds is definitely worse for it than the south.

I think the Cotswold has one of the largest over 65 populations...as they all retire there or used to.

Other than that apart from some pretty walks and nice looking cottages it’s no better than anywhere else they just like to think it is Grin

ShatnersWig · 25/02/2020 08:01

bowit Which bit of the Cotswolds are you referring to, because as someone not at all upper class and born and bred Cotswolds, I find the proportion of snooty people fairly low.

MyEnormousTurnip · 25/02/2020 08:11

Yes the architecture is pretty, but the landscapes are pretty unexciting

Bizarre statement. It’s an AONB?

ShatnersWig · 25/02/2020 08:38

Bowit If you don't like it, why do you keep going there?

Interesting choice of first time post.

MaJoady · 25/02/2020 08:46

Lots of the well known villages are full of weathy Londoners's country weekend homes. So aren't "locals" at all.

The tourists can be snooty and condescending too! Grin www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-gloucestershire-39456449

NemophilistRebel · 25/02/2020 08:46

I love it mainly.
A summers day in one of the main tourist spots is a nightmare though as you can’t walk down the roads without stopping very 5meters for people posing for selfies

StillMedusa · 25/02/2020 18:43

I've lived here 19 years now and don't find it snooty..and I also live in the military town Oldraver mentions... looked down on by the pretty villages surrounding it, but it's a cheerfully growing town and at least it has shops! There is some serious old money around here in the villages, but also a lot of famous bods and rich Londoners pretending to be country folk.
I do wear live in wellies and a Barbour...but that's because I have a dog Grin

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 26/02/2020 07:11

We went there on holiday as it said it was an area of outstanding natural beauty. I would say it was more ab area of distinctly average beauty. Very boring. The villages are pretty but the landscape was very meh.

MaxNormal · 26/02/2020 07:30

@thatmustbenigelwiththebrie that was my reaction too. I was surprised at how ordinary the landscapes were. Some pretty villages. Won't go back now that I've seen it.

Suetheliar · 26/02/2020 07:41

cath kidiston, wearing barbour, hunter jackets etc

There's also an epidemic of this in Surrey Grin
