Duvet covers that aren't too big for the quilt (boring!)

Does anyone own a duvet cover that isn't too big for the damn quilt?! I'm fed up of having empty covers and my duvet halfway down the bed Angry I've got a king-size Asda Feels like Down duvet and an Asda basic cotton cover and then a Fogarty extra soft cover. The Fogarty one is huuuuge compared to the quilt, but I don't want to buy a double duvet cover and risk it being too small. When we had a double bed I bought expensive John Lewis bedding and it was still too big for the quilt Sad. Any recommendations?

Well a duvet cover goes on a DUVET not a quilt, maybe that's what's causing the problem!?! A duvet and a quilt are 2 different things!

preponderings · 20/02/2020 21:17

Mine all fit, but I triple checked I was buying the right size before I ordered them.

Horsemad · 20/02/2020 21:56

I've got a M&S Super King size duvet and the SKS duvet cover is massive, way larger than it needs to be!

Meant to say, the duvet cover is M&S as well, no idea why it's so large.

SagaBauer · 20/02/2020 22:22

Well you would assume a king size duvet and cover from the same company would fit 🤷🏼‍♀️ glad it's not just me who has this problem.

And quilt/duvet are used interchangeably here, it's quite obvious what I mean 🙄

IME the snuggest fitting covers have been Ikea (mine are doubles but assume king would be the same)

I actually quite like a cover being a bit too big though as it hangs down more & covers the bed frame better.

GiantKitten · 20/02/2020 22:31

Also all bedding isn’t a standard size, eg some “double” sheets are 140cm wide & some are 135cm (too small, esp for a deeper mattress Angry) so it’ll be worth checking the given sizes for both duvet & cover.

Mollypolly2610 · 20/02/2020 22:43

I bought a king size duvet from Ikea and an Ikea king size duvet cover and the cover is too big for the duvet, lots of air space and it looks awful.

bought a spare KS duvet cover from Wilko - so cheap and it fits perfectly!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 20/02/2020 22:46

I usually find Asda a good fit, but my duvet is a Silent Night one from the Range. I have bought stuff in Dunelm before but they are usually a bit baggy.

Sharkyfan · 20/02/2020 22:54

I feel your pain OP!
I have duvet and bedding from the same place (John Lewis) or one set also from Laura Ashley and measurements are definitely the same, but it’s still too big and I get empty duvet cover at the top.
Tell me if you find the answer!

I think it’s worse with a feather duvet compared to a synthetic foamy one.
And in my case, I like light duvets which are not very thick so think maybe that’s the issue? That they’re allowing enough space for a very thick one.
But yeah - super annoying!

LangittleClegabbage · 20/02/2020 22:56

I have this problem too. SKS duvet and cover, both from JL, and yet the duvet cover is too big and baggy. Grrr, really pisses me off!

Sassy306 · 20/02/2020 22:59

I gave up looking and got some duvet clips off amazon, solved the problem even if a tad faffy :)

needadvicethankyouplease · 20/02/2020 23:01

Sounds daft but a double doublet is same side on all four edges, king size is generally longer along two edges are you putting them in correctly?

MoltonSilver · 20/02/2020 23:35

How to you wash and dry them?
I've never had one that didn't fit. I always buy 100% cotton and I use a clothes dryer. I'm wondering now if they might be made big to allow for shrinkage in the dryer.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 20/02/2020 23:41

King size and Superking size duvets are wider than they are long. Maybe you're not putting the cover on properly.
As a pp said double duvets are square. Larger ones are not.

MoltonSilver · 20/02/2020 23:41

Any chance the duvet is the wrong direction on the bed? I notice with the super king , if the duvet does in the wrong direction the cover is only a little tight width ways but way too big lengthways. It fits perfectly if I take the cover off and swap it round.

jalopy · 21/02/2020 06:12

Slight hijack but.....

Do you remember when IKEA had openings on far side corners of their duvet covers? Made it so much easier to adjust the duvet.

I'm surprised that this design detail isn't used by linen manufacturers.

Yesterdayforgotten · 21/02/2020 06:15

OP I suggest you measure you duvet to make sure its not off. I say this because the duvet covers arent usually the problem, I find it is the duvets. Dunelm dorma are the worst for it and I had to return acouple because they were loads out on the measurement. I suggest trying a different brand of duvet and measuring it once bought it and returning if it isn't size advertised.

cheeseismydownfall · 21/02/2020 07:19

I had this recently - we've got a king sizeJL duvet and have had an Orla whatshername duvet cover for years - so long it has actually gone in to holes. Bought some lovely new king size bedding from Soak & Sleep and it was massive. I did some investigation and discovered that actually JL king-size is 225x220 whereas in many other places (including Soak & Sleep) it is 230x220. I send the bedding back and am now pondering what to do, because all the covers I like are too big! It's very annoying! But I don't really want to replace a perfectly OK duvet just so I can get a cover to fit, it seems so wasteful.

delilahbucket · 21/02/2020 07:24

We used to have this problem until dp realised he was putting the duvet in the wrong way round. Always worth a try.

potbellend · 21/02/2020 07:34

I have an emperor size duvet but always it in an super king size duvet cover. Used to hate the baggy corners. Since rescuing cover size it's much more bouncy, fuller ans warmer

Yesterdayforgotten · 21/02/2020 11:00

Oh forgot to mention the duvet I had thay I returned was actually faulty as in it was advertising measurements that were way off what it was and the while batch was the same. Definitely measure and dont go off the packaging when purchasing a duvet!

Yesterdayforgotten · 21/02/2020 11:03

whole^

Feelingpoorlysick · 21/02/2020 11:05

I have a fogarty duvet. Asda and matalan covers fit it perfectly.

feistymama21 · 21/02/2020 11:08

John Lewis super king duvet and John Lewis super king duvet covers. Too big no matter which way round the duvet goes in. 15/20 years ago this was never a problem and now it drives me mad. I also have some bedding from various other makes and all too big. I read somewhere that Primark king size duvet covers fit super king size duvets and have been tempted to get some to try and see if they fit better.
